Entry Requirements
In the first year of study all students follow
a language module which builds on your
knowledge of spoken and written French
and a module on French culture designed
to introduce you to the rich diversity of film,
literature and history of France. There are
optional modules on French for Professional
Purposes. You can also study French as a
beginner.
Offers are made on review of the
application form, predicted/achieved
grades and subjects, the reference and
personal statement. Our preferred offer is
ABB-BBB at A-level but we will accept 128112 tariff points from a range of advanced
level qualifications. For Single Honours,
Joint Honours with two languages, and
Translation and Interpreting we require
a B grade or equivalent in the relevant
language. For Modern Languages (3

in A-level languages. For Joint Honours
Language with another subject we
require a B grade at GCSE in a language.
In the second year you continue to develop
your language skills and choose from optional
modules such as:
Translation Workshop; History of the French
Language; French Cinema since World War
II; Teaching English to Speakers of other
Languages. (TESOL).
In your final year you will have spent a
year abroad perfecting your language skills
and you will bring this new knowledge to
language modules covering skills such as oral
communication, translation, essay- writing
and résumé-writing. You will also be able to
pursue modules such as:
Love, Lust and the Meaning of Life; From Page
to Screen; France in the Second World War;
Dissertation on a subject of your choice.
Study Abroad
You spend your third year in France. You can
work as an assistant(e), teaching English in a
French school, you can find an approved work
placement, or you can study at one of our
partner universities: Angers, Toulouse, Brest,
Chambéry, Franche-Comté, Lyon III, Pau.
The year abroad offers many challenges and
rewards: you become fluent in French and
you gain valuable experiences to enhance
your employability.
Swansea Employability Award
Our students can sign up for the Swansea
Employability Award (SEA). The award enables
students to record their extra-curricular
activities; complete skills and personality
(psychometric) tests; practice writing CVs and
covering letters and have a mock job interview.
The SEA award is recorded on students’ HEAR
and Diploma Supplement.
Career Opportunities
92.3% of French graduates find employment
or pursue postgraduate studies 6
months after graduation (DLHE 2013/14)
Employability rates for language graduates
are very good. For some jobs excellent
language skills are a prerequisite, e.g.
teaching, translating and interpreting and
some civil service departments. There are
many other jobs where you will use your
French alongside other skills, for instance in
the media, business, finance and advertising.
You will also develop important transferable
skills with us, such as communication
and analytical skills.

“One of the best things about Swansea University is the fantastic range of modules on offer. As a
joint honours student I was able to choose topics that really suited my interests. Studying Media
and French I have learnt about culture, video production, history and journalism, and was even
able to combine the two subjects by studying a foreign film module. As a language student I also
benefited from a year abroad. Initially apprehensive about this aspect of my course, my year in France
turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of my life. It has not only benefited my fluency but
working in a foreign country has dramatically improved both my confidence and my employability. “
