PROSPECTING REPORT
G.S.W. Bruce, 1991
Hutt Township, Ontario
(OPAP File #OP 91-067)
Ba cjcgrgund^an d^ Siunmary
The undersigned applied for a 1991 OPAP grant in the
amount of S10,000.00 to finance a prospecting programme in
Hutt Township, Ontario. On 21 May 1991 I was advised by the
Incentives Office that my application was approved under OPAP
File No. OPG 91-012.
The grant application was approved on the basis of a
programme to prospect for gold associated with shearina and
ankeritization along what is believed to be a generally
east-west trending portion of the Deloro/Tisdale contact in
the northern portion of Hutt Township in the Porcupine Mining
Division.
Initial work in the area east of longitude 81 deg. 09
min.W. was discouraging because of the scarcity of outcrop
and the relatively uninteresting nature of the few outcrops
which were found. Parts of this area are potentially
interesting but, because of the widespread overburden, are
not prime areas for classical prospecting. The same comments
apply to the southwestern portion of Hutt Township.
However, in the area near the north end of Canoeshed Lake
an interesting new gold showing was found. This has been
named the "Comma Lake Showing" and a group of six claims has
been staked to protect it.
Conclusions and Recommendations
Although no "ore-grade" assays have been obtained from
the Comma Lake Showing (the highest chip sample yielded an
assay of 420 ppb Au over a width of 0.8 metres) the geologic
environment is very attrractive and the possibility of
finding economic mineralization under nearby
overburden-covered areas is considered to be outstanding.
-2-
Because of the very widespread overburden in the showing
area the next stage of exploration should either be bulldozer
stripping or cross-sectional diamond drilling, preferably the
latter.
Location and Access
The prospecting area is located on NTS map areas 42A/3
and 41P/14 in the northern and western parts of Hutt Township
in the Porcupine Mining Division. Probably the simplest way
to reach the area is to proceed by car or truck from Timmins
to South Porcupine and thence via the Langmuir road through
Fallon, Cleaver and Zavitz Townships to the junction with the
"Matachewan Road" (the western extension of Highway #566) in
northwestern Hutt Township.
Most parts of the prospecting area can be reached from
this junction by truck, canoe or on foot from the Matachewan
Road or from a network of old logging roads throughout the
area .
Work Done
Activities consisted of two parts: an earlier
reconnaissance prospecting programme and a later detailed
programme centred on the Comma Lake Showing.
Reconnaissance Prospecting:
This initial work consisted of prospecting along
waterways, old logging roads and, to a limited extent, by
pace-compass or claim-line traversing in areas considered
interesting on the basis of office research. In a general
way this work was not particularly encouraging, partly
because of the very limited amount of rock exposure and
partly because of the generally uninteresting character
of most of the outcrops seen. The most interesting
feature found during this initial work was the so-called
"Sausage Lake Showing", so-called because, although it is
an attractive-looking, highly ankeritized, locally
fuchsitic, tectonic zone, it does not (where sampled)
carry significant gold values.
-3Comma Lake Showing
After the initial reconnaissance work described above,
attention was focused on an aeromagnetic "low" which
crosses Comma Lake (see DWG #GS 3-5) and trends in a
southeasterly direction across Upper Canoeshed Lake
towards the Sausage Lake Showing. On 31 May 1991, a
small area of iron carbonate alteration was found just
west of Upper Canoeshed Lake. This alteration, a sample
of which ran only 12 ppb Au, was the first indication of
the existence of the Comma Lake showing nearby, and a
further indication that a major zone of carbonate
alteration correlated with the magnetic low mentioned
above. Between 24 June and 29 June 1991 some further
prospecting and sampling was carried out in the Comma
Lake/Upper Canoeshed Lake area. This work clearly
indicated that the Comma Lake zone was a target of
Arrangements were made to have Georgex
significance.
Exploration Contractors stake a group of six 40-acre
claims to cover the zone. These six claims, numbered P
1177274 to P 1177279 inclusive, were staked between 30
June and 4 July 1991 and were recorded on 8 July 1991.
They are currently registered in the name of G.S.W.
Bruce, Prospector's Licence A34592, Client No. 112815.
After the staking of the six-claim "Hutt Claim Group"
described above, all subsequent work was concentrated on
the claims.
A base line 355 metres long was cut along the suspected
trend of the Comma Lake Showing at an azimuth of 110
deg.(T), between Comma Lake and Upper Canoeshed Lake.
This baseline was used to tie in subsequent mapping,
prospecting and sampling.
A swath of ground on each side of the baseline was very
carefully prospected. This resulted in the discovery of
four areas where grubhoe stripping revealed strong
alteration zones with intense ankerite development and
locally with fuchsite and/or sericite and/or disseminated
pyrite and/or minor quartz veinlets and, in places, weak
to moderate schistosity. The most promising-looking of
these altered areas are in the vicinity of pace-compass
stations B-30, B-33, B-34 and B-35 (DWG #GS 3-5, Inset
"A"). At these locations, and other areas nearby.
-4-
careful moil chip sampling was carried out and results of
this sampling are shown on DWG #GS 3-5, 6, 7 and 8.
In addition to the foregoing, eleven augered soil samples
were taken along and just down-ice from the baseline
(Inset A, DWG #GS 3-5). Unfortunately, most of the
samples were of sticky glacial lake(?) clay with only a
few consisting of rather dubious sandy till. As could be
expected, no encouraging gold values were found in these
soil samples.
On the six-claim group, in addition to the previously
described detailed work, prospecting and mapping was
carried out along pace-compass traverses. Results of
this work are shown on DWG #GS 3-5. All of the work
described in this section, except the staking, was
carried out by prospectors G.S.W. Bruce and L.B.Halladay.
Geology and Results
(a) Reconnaissance Prospecting
Outcrops found during the regional reconnaissance phase
of the 1991 programme were scarce because of widespread
overburden. Those outcrops seen varied from dacites to
basalts to ultramafic flows and were not considered
particularly attractive for further prospecting.
(b) Hutt Claim Group and Comma Lake Showing
Away from the Comma Lake Showing, most of the claim group
appears to be underlain by dacitic to basaltic flows and
pyroclastics intruded by dioritic and gabbroic intrusives
of unknown size. In some places the metavolcanic rocks
are guite strongly schistose and in some places
crenulated and/or carbonated ("calcitized"). It is
suspected that very complex tight folding exists between
Upper Canoeshed Lake and Sausage Lake. There is some
possibility that this deformation may be related to the
nearby Burrows-Benedict Fault (parallel to and co-linear
with the Sausage Lake Showing) or with the Ferrier Creek
Fault (northwesterly-striking through the south end of
Sausage Lake). Both of these faults are shown on O.G.S.
Map #2345. There is even a possibility that the zone of
ankeritic alteration which hosts the Comma Lake Showing
is a part of the same alteration zone which hosts the
Sausage Lake Showing, despite some marked differences in
the two situations.
-5Th e Comma Lake Showing itself is very poorly exposed. It
is an east-southeasterly trending zone of intense
ankeritic alteration, probably in the order of 100 metres
wide. Alteration is so intense that the identity of some
of the original rock types is not evident. However, it
does appear that, near its southern edge, the altered
rocks may be highly ankeritized ultramafic flows. To the
north of the latter, much of the remaining width of the
zone may consist of a much-ankeritized mixed assemblage
of intermediate flows and pyroclastics (as exemplified by
outcrops near Station #B30). Towards the apparent
northern edge of the zone, particularly in the vicinity
of Station B-33 and B-35, outcrops of intensely
ankeritized, fuchsitic and sericitic porphyry were found.
The best gold values found to date occur towards the
northern portion of the zone particularly in the vicinity
of Stations B-33 and B-34. The best individual analysis
in this area was 420 ppb Au over a 0.8-metre width. This
interval, when averaged with adjacent samples yielded a
weighted average grade of 232 ppb Au over a width of 2.2
metres.
The next highest individual assay occurs about 20 metres
to the west where a 0.7 m chip sample assayed 270 ppb
Au. This material consisted of very rusty ankeritized
quartz-felspar porphyry with minor pyrite and occasional
2 mm quartz stringers.
Complete sampling data are shown on accompanying drawings
#GS 3-5, 6, 7 and 8.
The occurrence of ultramafic flows and porphyries within
the Comma Lake zone suggest that it may be on, or close
to the Deloro Tisdale contact.
It should be stressed here that there is very little
outcrop within the Comma Lake Showing area. So far these
few outcrops reveal a strong and valid gold anomaly
within a strongly-altered ankeritic/fuchsitic zone with
accompanying pyrite, quartz veinlets and gold at what is
believed to be a regionally significant stratigraphic
position.
-6-
Much more work is warranted to fully explore the
overburden-covered portions of this promising setting
