GENERAL RULES
1.
Each school may enter one student per art category.
2.
Each entry will be the original creation of the participant alone, but the participant may have had
advice or instruction. No group projects are permitted.
3.
Each entry must have been created since the last GACS Festival.
4.
A student may enter artwork in several different categories.
5.
Disqualification of the entry or deduction of points from the total score may result if artwork done
in a medium which might smear has not been properly prepared.
Examples:
Oil or acrylic paint that is not completely dry
Charcoal or pastels that have not been sealed with fixative
Unfired clay (greenware)
Other similar situations
SUBJECT MATTER
1.
Entries are not restricted to sacred themes, but entries that reflect sensualism, humanism, occultism,
or worldliness will be DISQUALIFIED. Any subject detrimental to spiritual edification will not be
allowed. No weapons are allowed.
2.
Students should do original drawings or paintings from imagination or actual life. Copying of any
existing artwork (painting, drawing, illustration, etc.) is prohibited.
3.
Working from a personal photograph taken by the entrant is allowed. Other photographs may be
used, but only if the student has strived to be creative in his interpretation of the photograph, rather
than trying to copy it exactly. Any photographs used must be submitted with the artwork; they
should be placed in an envelope, marked with the student’s name and school, and taped to the back
of the piece.
PRESENTATION
1.
Two-dimensional artwork must be mounted or matted in white, off-white (ivory), tan, or black
mounting or matting. The mat should be no less than 2 inches wide; 3-5 inches is preferred. Double
matting is permitted, as long as the under mat does not show more than ¼ inch width of
contrasting color inside the main neutral-colored mat. Photographs must use white matting.

AREA TWO: FINE ARTS: ART
Work may be protected with clear acetate, if desired. No framing is allowed, except in mixed media
and craft if the frame is an integral part of the overall composition of the work. Any other framed
piece will receive a five-point deduction off the final score.
For presentation of oil and/or acrylic paintings, see suggestions under those categories.
Three-dimensional work should include, if possible, an attached base if one is needed to display the
work. No object (i.e. flowers, plants, furniture, toys, etc.) is to be displayed other than the work
itself.
FORMS AND PAPERWORK
1.
Each entry must have attached to one of the accompanying adjudication forms a completed copy of
the Artist’s Idea Statement, including his signature, found in Appendix C, giving the source of the
student’s idea and explaining how he developed his artwork from the idea. It is extremely important
to be specific in giving details to validate originality. Photographs showing the development of the
artwork may be included if desired.
2.
Photography entries should use the photography idea statement, found in Appendix C.
3.
Each entry must have an official identification card giving the contestant’s name, school, grade,
category, medium, and title of work attached to the front or base of the piece when submitted for
competition. A copy of this card can be found in Appendix C with the artist idea statement.
4.
Points will be deducted from the total score if any of the following are missing when the artwork is
presented for judging: official art contest ID card, two prepared current adjudication forms, signed
idea statement, and any photograph used for reference.

ELEMENTARY MANUAL
AREA TWO: FINE ARTS: ART
SCULPTURE
SPECIFIC RULES:
1.
Sculpture is the art of carving (wood, foam, or plaster), modeling (natural or artificial clay or
faux stone), or combining (wood pieces, cardboard, found objects, paper) to produce a
realistic or abstract work in three dimensions. Good subjects for sculptures are people,
animals, portrait heads, bas-relief of a scene, and abstract compositions of 3-D forms.
Traditionally a sculpture is a fine art that is one-of-a kind, and meant for aesthetics only.
2.
Acceptable materials include, but are not limited to, wood, plaster, stone, metal, wire, wax,
ceramic slip, clay (both fired and unfired), paper-maché, balsa foam, paper, and modeling
compounds.
3.
The use of a mold is permitted only if the student has helped to make the mold and has
poured the object himself. The mold must be presented with the finished artwork.
4.
No objects should be displayed other than the sculpture itself.
5.
A sculpture base is optional.
TEXTILES
SPECIFIC RULES:
1.
Entries may be selected from the following: macramé, weaving, needlework of any kind,
string or thread art, rug making, or batik.
2.
Commercial designs may not be printed or transferred to the fabric. Designs may be referred
to when counting stitches but must not be copied exactly; the student may incorporate
some elements of different designs into his own creation.
3.
For cross-stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, etc., a copy of the student’s original design (a
roughly penciled plan is all right), as well as any commercial designs referred to must be
submitted with the project.
4.
Painted designs on garments are not allowed, unless the contestant has designed and made
the garment himself. No purchased garments, towels, etc. are permitted.
WATERCOLOR PAINTING
SPECIFIC RULES:
1.
Any water-based medium, such as watercolor paints, gouache, or tempera, may be used.
2.
Either translucent or opaque techniques are acceptable.
3.
Proper watercolor paper (with a “tooth,” or rough surface) should be used for best results.
