A
s the leaves on the trees start to show shades of orange, red and yellow, spend a moment
with me to consider the changes that the Atlanta Humane Society is embracing and the
crescendo of excitement for our next season.
As we look towards the future, as the incoming President, I invite you to celebrate the successes of
the past year. In 2011, Atlanta Humane Society will adopt more than 5,000 pets into loving homes
with families throughout Georgia. We will complete more than 7,500 spay/neuter procedures
thanks to the expanded availability of our Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program and the Surgical Utility
Vehicle. These initiatives as well as many others are only possible due to the ongoing support of our
donors and our community.
Our efforts are certainly not going unnoticed. This fall, Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity
evaluator, awarded Atlanta Humane Society its coveted Four-Star Rating honoring our sound fiscal
management and commitment to accountability and transparency. This is a true testament to the
superior leadership and ongoing dedication of everyone that
touches this organization – our staff as well as our volunteers.
Every person (and animal) makes a difference.
Our largest (7.3 acres and 32,000 square feet) achievement
this year is on the near horizon. Join me at the grand opening
of the Mansell Campus on December 3. Our new, state-of-theart animal rescue and adoption center expands our services
and outreach to the North Fulton region. Currently, only 5% of
adopters at the Howell Mill Campus reside in this area. We
expect the activity at the new campus to result in loving homes
for more than 5,000 animals in 2012 – essentially doubling
the number of adoptions from the Atlanta Humane Society.
“I have always had
a heart for animals...
which makes it

Without the support of our community, the Mansell Campus
and our expanded outreach services would not be possible.
Recently, we launched a Capital Campaign to raise $10
million to support the facility and operations of the Mansell
Campus. I am proud to announce that we have already received almost $5 million in donations
and pledges to date. I am deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support for this organization and
invite you to consider sharing in our success with your financial support.
your President.”
I have always had a heart for animals. As the Chairman of the Board for two terms and a board
member since 2000, my passion for animals has emerged as a guiding principal in my life, which
makes it an honor to be asked to serve as your President. I intend to build upon our successes and
work side by side with our team to continue our mission and seek new opportunities that will make a
significant difference in the lives of animals throughout Atlanta and across Georgia.
In closing, consider this. What is on your Holiday gift list? Does it include a pet adoption, a sponsor
of a long-time shelter animal, volunteer time or even a financial donation? I hope that you will join me
to celebrate a new season of the Atlanta Humane Society.

Our HEART Has Expanded!
Our H.E.A.R.T. surgical team travels outside of the metro Atlanta area to perform approximately 200 surgeries per month.
(H.E.A.R.T. - Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team)
As you may remember, August 2010 marked the advent of the
Atlanta Humane Society’s mobile Low Cost Spay/Neuter program. Thanks to the very generous contributions of our board and
donors, we were able to purchase a brand new, state of the art
mobile unit equipped with stainless steel surgical and holding
areas. In 2010, we were able spay and neuter over 400 pets in
rural areas outside of the metro Atlanta area, and this year we are
making an even greater impact!
In July of 2011, the Atlanta Humane Society received additional
funding, thanks in large part to a remarkable donation from the
Holland M. Ware Foundation, to expand this initiative by launching the Holland M. Ware Foundation Spay/Neuter Program.
Each week, our surgical team travels outside of the metro Atlanta
area to perform approximately 200 surgeries per month. In addition, the Atlanta Humane Society also hosts a low cost spay/
neuter clinic every Friday and Saturday onsite at the Howell Mill
campus to perform an additional 280 surgeries monthly. With
the recent expansion of this program, we plan to spay/neuter
approximately 2500 pets by the end of 2011 – and over 5000
pets in 2012!

ATLANTA HUMANE SOCIETY
Fall 2011
This low cost spay/neuter program is an integral part of lowering
pet overpopulation rates by reducing the amount of unwanted pets
born in the State of GA. The goal of this program is to provide a
much-needed service to underserved communities in metro Atlanta
and its neighboring counties, and to contribute directly to lower
pet euthanasia numbers in overcrowded shelters and the amount
of pet surrenders overall.
Pet sterilizations offered through this program are just $20, and include a complimentary rabies vaccination and microchip. To read
more about this awesome program, schedule an appointment, or
receive information on how you can contribute to the success of
this life-saving initiative, please visit AtlantaHumane.org/suv/.

Atlanta Humane Society
to open second shelter in Alpharetta
By Nedra Rhone, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For the first time in its 138-year history, the Atlanta Humane
Society will open a second location later this year.
The 32,000 square-foot facility on Mansell Road in Alpharetta
will allow Atlanta’s oldest private charity to adopt twice as many
animals and hire about 50 people to staff it.
Funding for the $8 million-plus campus, which opens Dec. 3, has
come from low-interest loans and a $2.5 million gift from Anne
Cox Chambers, a principal owner of Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises, which owns The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Located on the former
site of the Cherokee
Ford dealership at
1565 Mansell Road,
the new facility will
have four cat colony
rooms, 32 puppy
kennels and 78 large dog kennels. The 7.3 acres will provide
more green space than the AHS’ location at 981 Howell Mill
Road, enabling animals and potential families to comfortably
interact outdoors.
“The gift is really enabling in terms of making this adoption center
a reality,” said William Shaheen, who recently took over as AHS
president. “Our board, of which Mrs. Chambers is a Honorary
Life Member, has been very supportive of the Mansell Campus in
spirit as well as financially.” The AHS plans to name the adoption
center in Mrs. Chambers’ honor.
Shaheen said the new location will allow the AHS to double the
up to 6,000 adoptions and 8,000 spay and neuter procedures
performed each year. The organization, which seeks to prevent
abuse, cruelty and exploitation of animals, will also use the new
campus to deploy its animal rescue teams and surgical utility
vehicle, a mobile spay/neuter unit.
“I am so happy to be associated with this new center,” said Mrs.
Chambers, who has adopted three pets from the AHS. “Anything
that encourages other Atlantans to discover the joys of pet adoption is very welcome indeed.”
The decision to locate the new facility in north Fulton County was
driven in part by the area’s low level of adoptions -- less than 5
percent of the AHS total -- Shaheen said. In addition, residents in
the area tend to have large yards, enabling them to adopt bigger
dogs that may be harder to place.
1873 Society Club
the Humane Event
The 1873 Society Club hosted its second annual fundraising
benefit, The Humane Event, on Friday September 23, 2011.
Led by co-chairs, Rebecca Bily and Sam Henderson, the event
raised over $65,000.00 for Atlanta Humane Society’s H.E.A.R.T.
activities. The soiree took place at the stylish and wonderfully
unique Summerour Studio in Atlanta’s West Midtown district. Party
goers sipped signature margaritas, indulged in an Avion tequila
tasting and enjoyed gourmet Mexican fare from Taqueria Del
Sol. 1873 Society Club honored Anna Ware and Greg Norred
for their extensive contributions to animal welfare as well as the
H.E.A.R.T. team and then guests danced the night away to a live
performance by Atlanta-based band, Kingsized. Other highlights
included on-site tours of the surgical utility vehicle, a guest appearance by precious pups from Atlanta Humane Society, an extensive
silent auction and a fun, interactive photo-booth by ClikSimple.

No Ball At All 2012
It’s that time of year again! Yes, we’re preparing for No Ball At
All 2012! The success of this event is entirely due to you, our loyal
donors, and your help allowing us to continue providing the care
and love our Society pets are so deserving of.
For those of you unsure what No Ball is exactly, a quick
explanation. In a nutshell, it’s a non-event, meaning that all the
money we raise goes to help our homeless pets instead of paying
for the food, entertainment, and decorations for a fancy party.
Thanks so much for helping us
care for our Society pets
while they wait
for a new forever home!
However, if you do want to get together with fellow animal
lovers, a No Ball At All Patron Party will be held next spring at
the home of Lorri and Forrest McClain. This event is open to all
donors who make a No Ball gift of at least $350 per person.
Once again, Knox Jewelers is donating a custom-designed pin
and OwenLawrence is giving us a gift certificate that will be
given away at the party, Johnny Cain has agreed to photograph
the event for us, and Atlanta Flower Market is providing our
centerpieces.
Invitations will be mailed out soon. However, you can also use the
reply envelope in this newsletter to make a donation – just indicate
“No Ball” on the envelope or the memo line of your check. You
can also contribute online at AtlantaHumane.org or by calling
404-974-2877.
Ladies Home Journal WE tv Volunteer Awards
Ladies Home Journal and We TV found Amazing Women Volunteers! They selected two finalists, but the winner was chosen by you! Meet
the WINNER - AHS’s own All Star Volunteer, Alison Bearman. She was nominated by fellow volunteer, Jana Cooper, with the following essay.
Alison volunteers six days a week averaging 30 to 40 hours per week.
She’s worked in many capacities at the Atlanta Humane Society since
2002. No job is too big or too small for Alison. She regularly walks
between 15 and 20 dogs a day. She cleans kennels, bathes dogs,
picks up poop, and comforts sick, injured, or recently rescued dogs.
She understands the needs of dogs who come from puppy mills or
who are rescued from hoarders. She helps dogs who have never had
a real home overcome their fears and insecurities so that they can
become adoptable. One of Alisons’s favorite ways to help the animals
is by taking pictures of them to put on the AHS website. In this way, she
speaks for the animals who have no voice and spreads the word about
their need for a permanent home. Alison is tireless in her efforts. She
never complains about the hard work and never brags about her good
deeds. She quietly goes about her day, always putting the dogs’ needs
before her own. Alison has no children but the hundreds of dogs she
has helped are truly her family. All who know Alison respect her, and I
can think of no volunteer more deserving than she to win your contest.
All Winners Received:
Alison, the Grand Prize Winner, won a $5,000 donation to
• A Day of Beauty makeover
the Atlanta Humane Society and will be featured in Ladies’ Home
• Prominent feature on WEVolunteer.tv

Friends For Life
Toby
Dear AHS,
I was looking for a cat in 2000—an adult cat who was
already litter trained. I had gone through every cat there, or
so I thought, until I came to the last kennel. Toby’s amber eyes
captivated me, and when I picked him up, he put both of his
paws around me like a hug. I then decided that he was the
cat for me!
I got Toby when I was single, and he has been with me into
marriage and the birth of my son, Sam. He is very gentle with
Sam, who is now 2 years-old, more so than Sam is with him!
Toby still sleeps with me at night, and is in fine health at 10
years-old. He is my buddy and I can’t imagine life without
him.
Sincerely,
Christi Sizemore Behrend

Mariel Hannah Award
A native of metro Atlanta, Mariel Hannah was a lifelong pet lover
with a special affinity for homeless animals. Tragically, she was
one of four people killed in a home invasion in March 2006. To
honor the 18 year-old’s memory, her family and friends established a fund at the Atlanta Humane Society to recognize selfless
acts by teenagers who share Mariel’s love for animals.
We are now accepting nominations for the annual Mariel Hannah
Humane Heroes Award. If you know a teen between the ages of
13 and 18 at the time of service who performed an extraordinary
act of kindness for the benefit of animals, briefly describe (under
200 words) how and why he/she should be selected as the
2012 Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award winner.
AtlantaHumane.org
A recipient will be selected in April
and announced in early May at the
start of “Be Kind to Animals Week.”
The recipient will receive a cash
prize and a plaque of recognition.
Mail your nomination to: Cathy
Sleva, Atlanta Humane Society,
981 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. The winner will
be acknowledged by mail and at our annual “Be Kind to Animals
Week” Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony in May.
All nomination materials must be postmarked by April 1st,
2012 to be eligible.

AHS Mansell Campus Opening Soon!
The excitement is beginning to grow in North Fulton County as
the Atlanta Humane Society’s second adoption center nears
completion. AHS staff and construction crews are working
feverishly to finalize the 32,000 square foot facility by the end of
November, and then - just in time for Christmas! - a great selection
of dogs and cats needing good homes will be introduced to the
surrounding communities.
The AHS Mansell Campus will be a unique state-of-the art
adoption center and shelter. Special features will include four
glass-walled cat rooms where feline residents can enjoy perches,
ramps, and beds while adopters have the opportunity to observe
them in a natural environment. For canine residents, the center will
offer cage-free habitats for puppies and dogs who will reside in a
series of comfortable runs. There will also be an on-site veterinary
clinic (made possible by a generous grant from Veterinary
Clinics of America) that will provide medical care for the shelter’s
animals.
Situated on seven acres, there will be ample parking and plenty
of exercise opportunities for the center’s dogs. The AHS staff is
particularly enthusiastic about a one-acre exercise area, divided
into four separate enclosures, where adult dogs and older puppies
can run free on a special pet-friendly turf.
Like its Atlanta counterpart, the AHS Mansell Campus will
offer a variety of pet-related services to the public. In addition
to adoptions, there will be a Pet Facilitated Therapy program
benefitting nursing homes, hospitals, and children’s centers. In
addition, there will be free grief counseling sessions for owners
who have lost their pets, professional dog behavior and training
services, and a pet merchandise store. AHS’ Humane Emergency
Animal Rescue Team (HEART) will also be based at the center.
The AHS Mansell Campus will be located at 1565 Mansell Road
in Alpharetta, conveniently close to GA 400. A Grand Opening
Celebration is scheduled for 11:00 am on December 3rd.
According to AHS President William Shaheen, “The AHS Mansell
Campus represents a vision by our Board of Directors and key
partners to significantly expand our mission of saving as many
animals as our resources, staff and financial ability will permit.
Last year, AHS found homes for approximately 6000 cats and
dogs through our Howell Mill Road location. Our goal is to meet
or exceed that number at our Alpharetta facility, meaning that next
year we hope to help more than 12,000 animals.
12
ATLANTA HUMANE SOCIETY
Fall 2011
Of course, ensuring quality care for so many animals presents
its own challenges. AHS hopes that local residents will sign
up for a variety of volunteer positions that will include walking
dogs, socializing cats, assisting with the shop and reception
desk, helping with events, and participating in administrative
and fundraising activities. An online volunteer application is now
available on the AHS website (AtlantaHumane.org) for people
interested in such opportunities.
On October 5th, the AHS Facebook page launched a 60-day
countdown clock that will end when the ribbon is cut at our Grand
Opening Celebration on December 3rd.

Tables & Tails
Atlanta restaurants
helping animals in need.
Patrons treated themselves to breakfast, lunch or dinner out
on the town to help the “Society” pets of the Atlanta Humane
Society. The first annual “Tables & Tails” event took place on
October 27, 2011 at the following restaurants around the
greater Atlanta area. Some of Atlanta’s most popular
eateries donated 20% of your check to the Atlanta
Humane Society for general operating support and
Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team efforts.

Winter Tips for You & Your Pet
Even in our relatively mild winters, dogs need protection from
wet and cold, either inside your house (best) or inside their own.
Dogs can freeze! Most small and short-haired dogs are best kept
inside when it gets cold. An outdoor dog needs a winter coat
and its dog house should be dry and elevated with clean, dry
bedding and a flap over the opening to keep out drafts. Consider adding a dog door to the garage and a soft cushion in the
warmest corner.
Diet - Check water bowls often when the temperature dips below
freezing, and break the ice or refill with water as necessary. An
outdoor dog may need more calories in the winter to produce
body heat; on the other hand, an indoor dog may exercise less
during the colder months and need fewer calories. Ask your vet
about increasing or decreasing the amount you feed your dog.
Chemicals - Antifreeze smells and tastes great to dogs, but it is
a deadly poison. Watch for radiator drainage spots in driveways and flush them clean immediately. Chemicals used to melt
ice and snow on sidewalks can irritate your pet’s paws (and
burn your pet’s mouth if it licks), so you may need to wipe them
with a wet cloth after an outing. Pets outside in the snow may
need the ice between their paw pads removed.

We’re excited that the
Atlanta Humane Society
has been chosen by our
friends at Nestlé Purina
and Kroger to participate
in the 2011 “Tales for the
Pet Lover’s Heart” program. The fourth-annual “Tales” campaign is
a joint program between Nestlé Purina and Kroger stores to donate
up to $175,000 to 20 participating animal welfare organizations
across the country.
The campaign encourages pet enthusiasts to share joyful tales, photos and videos of their pets. In addition, we hope you will consider
entering the campaign sweepstakes. Nestlé Purina and Kroger will
donate $50,000 to one of the participating animal welfare organizations – it could be us! – in honor of one randomly selected person.
The winning person will also receive a year’s worth of groceries at
Kroger and a year’s supply of Purina pet food.
Just for participating in this campaign, the Atlanta Humane Society
will receive a $5,000 donation. Also, for every pet tale submitted to
the program website, www.TalesForThePetLoversHeart.com., Purina
and Kroger will donate $1, up to $25,000, to be divided equally
among the participating animal welfare organizations. So the
Atlanta Humane Society has an opportunity to receive an additional
$
1,250 if 25,000 stories are submitted. We encourage you to log
on to the website and enter your tale – you have an opportunity to
support our organization and other worthy animal welfare groups
around the country.
The “Tales for the Pet Lover’s Heart” campaign runs through November 2011. For more information, feel free to visit the program
website, www.TalesForThePetLoversHeart.com, or Facebook page,
www.Facebook.com/TalesForThePetLoversHeart. And thanks to our
friends at Nestlé Purina and Kroger for including us in this program
and supporting pet welfare.
Tax Tips
for Giving Gifts
to Our Needy
Furry Friends
“Give a wonderful donation,
don’t get taxed, help animals in need”
An outstanding way to help animals in need at the Atlanta
Humane Society and have the government help.
For a limited time, until December 31, 2011, you can
make a direct gift from your IRA assets to the Atlanta
Humane Society, a 501c3 corporation. If you are 70 ½
years old, you can donate as much as $100,000 to the
Atlanta Humane Society.
This transfer can count toward your required minimum
distribution as well.
Here is how it works, thanks to the Pension Protection Act
of 2006: instead of making a required withdrawal and
reporting it as taxable income, you would transfer your
gift directly from your IRA to the Atlanta Humane Society,
without your handling it in-between.
WHY get your pet micro-chipped?
You help animals in need, don’t get taxed as income,
have a heartfelt donation for a worthwhile cause.
Micro-chipping is a safe, humane and inexpensive way to help find
your beloved pet if he or she ever becomes lost. Often stray animals
are brought into a shelter or a vet. Pets with chips can be scanned
and their information tracked by a national data system that will tell
where the pet is from and who he belongs to.
Thanks to all our generous friends for helping the animals
in need and supporting the Atlanta Humane Society. As
long as animals need help, we’ll be here.
For a nominal fee of $25, you can have peace of mind if your
favorite four-legged friend ever becomes missing while on vacation
or even from your own back yard!
In Appreciation,
Micro-chipping is available at our veterinary clinic. Please call
404.875.6420 for more information.
Our veterinary clinic was made possible by the Carlos and
Marguerite Mason Trust.
