Dear John
Sometimes our thinking gets a little muddled, here are some
errors in thinking that have been made in public:
"Darts can really help with literacy"
Ray Stubbs
"(He) called me a 'rapist recluse'. I'm not a recluse."
Mike Tyson
"I think gay marriage should be between a man and a
woman."
Arnold Schwarzenegger
"A friend told us his wife couldn't have a baby because her
florescent tubes were blocked?"
Colin Holford

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the
impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
Al Gore (when he was Vice President)
Sometimes we all say things in error as we have minor cranial
glitches and sometimes we have an error in our thinking that
can undermine our confidence and potential. In short, it's a
genuine misunderstanding. Thankfully we can put it right.
As you may know John when I speak at conferences and events
on 'Achievement Thinking' I help individuals and teams become

John applies his
'Achievement
Thinking' system to:
more self-motivated, resilient and do more with less. What you
may not know is as part of my CSR initiative I also speak in
secondary schools to students to inspire them to achieve their
full potential.
I spoke at a school recently and realised how many students
have difficulty understanding some simple concepts that I
realised as adults we also get wrong too. To be open I didn't get
it either until a few years ago.
Here are three of them:
1) It's ok to fail but not ok to be a failure.
Building resilience
If you have a goal you believe in and it will benefit you (as long
as you don't break the law) on your journey to achieve that goal
you may fail. Failure is an opportunity to learn to find a way
how to do something right. You're only a failure when you give
in without achieving your goal. Therefore failing is ok.
Team building
2) Confidence is not the same as arrogance.
Success Mindset
If you are good at something and you know it, it's ok to say you
are good at it. I don't mean boast, I mean if asked and it's
appropriate then say so. Arrogance is when you think just
because you're good at something you're better than anyone
else as a person... I'm sorry but you're not.

We all have our strengths and constraints that's why we all have
our part to play in the world and why we need each other.
3) To love yourself is not the same as being IN love with
yourself.
When we love ourselves we treat ourselves as we would treat
the people we love, we do not beat ourselves up. We might be
disappointed and annoyed but we forgive ourselves, move on
and make every effort to progress and grow.
I'm amazed how many of us hinder our potential because of
these misunderstandings. As I said, I used to think the same
way.
So John be your own best friend, whatever you are good at
never be afraid to say so and never be afraid to fail.
Some of us need to be a little more like the boxing promoter
Don King who once said, 'I never cease to amaze myself. I say
this humbly."
Errr... well, maybe not quite like Don King but you know what I
mean ;)
The Sneaky Stunt - I can read your mind... try me
I love this little sneaky stunt. Are you ready John? Then here
goes, follow my instructions very very carefully.
1) Think of a number between one and ten
2) Multiply this number you're thinking of by nine
3) If the resulting number is a two digit number then add the
Email John to ask a
question or get in touch
3) If the resulting number is a two digit number then add the
two digits together - either way you should now have a single
digit number
4) Subtract 5 from this number
5) Change the number to a letter of the alphabet as follows:
1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C and so on
6) Think of a country that starts with this letter
7) Note the second letter of the country's name
8) Think of an animal that starts with this letter
9) Think about the colour of this animal
So now you're thinking of a colour, an animal and a country.
Concentrate, don't say anything in case I hear you. Just
concentrate on the colour, animal and country.
I'm making my mind blank (that was quick) and I'm going in to a
trance... the mist is clearing and I can see...

The Challenge - for a bit of fun, I challenge you to
drop this useless fact into your next conversation
Flour is actually derived from the french word for
flower, which is fleur.
Of course some people think 'fleur' is something you walk on :O
True Wit... and Wisdom - I've always admired... wit

...and finally
If you're organising a dinner, conference, road show, away day
or any event and you're looking for an after dinner or
motivational business speaker who'll give you insights and tools
to be more resourceful and resilient, is energising and has sack
loads of humour, then I can help.
At conferences, for instance, many of my clients ask me to
speak at the after lunch slot when an audience needs
energising, as well as to provide practical content that they can
use.
I'm not saying that I would be a perfect fit for your event; that,
of course, would be for you to decide. What I am saying is that
if you do have an event coming up, then when would 'now' be a
good time to give me a call on 01274 685 152 or email me at
[email protected] and find out how I can help?
Until next month, stun the world... be astonishing.
