BEDE'S NEWS 5 February 2016 Tel: 0161 226 3323 www.sbcm.co.uk A Message From Mr Robson This week, we have displayed the proposed new College blazer (without the gold trim) in the Parents’ Café for parents to view. I would welcome your comments on the alternative blazer and feedback forms have been provided. We will make a final decision on the new blazer after February half-term so we can ensure it is available as soon after Easter as possible with the rest of the new uniform. May I remind parents that the new uniform is not compulsory until September 2017 but will be available to buy soon after Easter this year. Pupils may ‘mix and match’ until September 2017. We will be hosting the Lower Sixth Higher Education Evening on Monday 8 February and all Lower Sixth students and their parents are recommended to attend this important and informative event regarding applications to higher education. I would like to remind pupils and parents that the Maher Library will have a daily extended opening time from 8am until 6.00pm (Monday – Thursday) and 8am - 4.30pm (Friday). This will come into effect after the February half-term holidays. This new provision will allow parents some flexibility in collecting their children at the end of the school day and, indeed, will be very useful to the pupils for the purposes of study, revision and homework. Lent commences next week and Masses for Ash Wednesday have been arranged for Prep, Senior and Sixth Form. All pupils will be encouraged to do something extra for Lent and look for ways to help in their local and wider communities. The half-term will culminate in an exciting House Day on Friday 12 February. Mr Robson E-Safety Career Focus On Medicine We are looking forward to the next Career Focus event when we will be welcoming former pupil, Kerry Burke, who studied medicine at Cambridge before taking up her current post as a junior doctor at MRI. The talk is aimed particularly at pupils in the Lower Fifth and above, but is open to any interested pupils. It will take place in the Library at 12.50pm on Tuesday 9 February and pupils are welcome to bring along a packed lunch. The final funding hurdle was cleared as a direct result of the very generous donation made by the Dunn family which meant that our funding target was met! The minibus will now be purchased and we are very excited that the College will be able to use it soon! Once again we want to extend our profound gratitude to all who have helped in converting this dream into a reality, with the Dunn family taking the baton across the finish line. Careers Talk Lower Fifth pupils heard about three very different careers in their PSME lesson this week. We were pleased to be able to welcome Jon Sime, a quantity surveyor, PC Trevor Richards, a police officer and Tim Rich, a sports writer. Each speaker gave a fascinating talk about their working lives and what they find particularly rewarding about their chosen careers. We are really grateful to them for giving up their valuable time to inspire and inform our pupils about the world of work. All three speakers will be at our Careers Convention on 14 March, so any pupils and parents with questions will have the opportunity to ask at that event. Do not forget to contact Mrs Poolton, the Careers Coordinator, at kpoolton@ stbedescollege.co.uk if you would like to share your career experiences with pupils. James represented St Bede’s and recited two poems he had learnt by heart – Remembrance by Emily Bronte and The Second Coming by W.B Yeats. The competition was fierce, with students (most of whom were older than James) from twelve North West schools all turning in great performances in front of a panel of judges including award-winning poet Mandy Coe. Although James was not chosen as one of the top two competitors, he was complemented on his vocal tone and invited to perform alongside Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy in the summer. James was ably supported by Joseph who was our reserve competitor and had also learnt two poems by heart. Reception: Harry D Prep 2: Joseph Prep 3: Seamus Prep 6: Maya Faith Week Continuing our World Faith week Prep 1 and Prep 5 were visited by Shafiq Siddiq from the British Muslim Heritage Centre, based in Whalley Range. Mr Siddiq talked to the children about the history of Islam, about how Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was visited by Angel Jibril and from these visits Islam was born and the Qur’an came into being. They learned that the meaning of Islam is PEACE. The children had a fantastic time and learned so much from Mr Siddiq. We would like to thank him for taking the time to talk to our children and sharing his faith with us. Tooth Decay Last week, Prep 4 were investigating tooth decay in their Science lesson. They put five boiled eggs into water, milk, coke, apple juice and orange juice. They used eggs because an egg shell is similar to the coating on your teeth. They left the eggs for seven days and evaluated the results. They saw a huge change in the eggs left in coke, orange juice and apple juice! They could not believe the changes in just 7 days. There were no changes to the eggs left in the milk and water which are now Prep 4’s drink of choice!!
