SHORT STORY COMPETITION
INVITATION
The Grammar School, Nicosia, the European University Cyprus, the University of Monday and the
Ministry of Education and Culture, announce the 7th Short Story Competition for students of Private
Secondary Schools (of seven academic years), as well as Public Secondary Schools of the Nicosia
District. The competition is dedicated to the Grammar School’s 50th anniversary and to the poet
Costas Montis, celebrating the centennial anniversary of his birth.
The Competition is optional and students will work on writing their short stories in their spare time.
The short stories will be judged by different panels for Lower School (Gymnasium) and Upper School
(Lyceum) and for English and Greek. Prizes and commendations will be awarded by category.
Short Story Day will be held on Monday, January 27th, 2014, at the Cultural Centre of the European
University Cyprus. Further information on Short Story Day and the Short Story Competition Award
Ceremony will be announced later.
Language and/or literature teachers of Greek and English please inform your students in due time.
Last date for submission of entries is Thursday, December 19th, 2013.

To honor Costas Montis’ work the following ten words taken from his novel “Afentis Batistas and the
other things” must be included in the plot of the short story, in any form, and must be underlined:
Memory, glance, years, sink (verb), see off, sense (verb), walls, hesitantly, fifty, endless
The Panel of Judges both for the Greek and English entries will consist of distinguished writers and
academics who will evaluate the originality, literary style, plot, structure, character portrayal, and
creative composition of stories which include the above ten words.
RULES FOR THE COMPETITION
The competition is open to all students of the above mentioned schools, ages 12-19
The short story should be no longer than 1200 words
Short stories must be:
 the personal and original work of the student
 titled
 typewritten, double-spaced, single-sided on standard A4 paper
Students:
 can participate only with one short story
 must not write their name on the envelope
 must use a pseudonym and a four digit number of their choice, on every envelope and
every page of their short story
To submit their work, students will need two envelopes:
 A small envelope, inside which they will put their completed Entry Form(*1) with their
name, pseudonym, four digit number and school, lyceum or gymnasium. Outside the
envelope they must write (a) the same pseudonym (b) the same four-digit number of
their choice (for example ‘rose 1262’), (c) Upper or Lower school accordingly and (d)
English or Greek accordingly. They must not write their name.
 A large envelope, inside which they must put (a) the small envelope, sealed (see above)
and (b) eight copies of their short story for each individual judge’s consideration (the
same pseudonym and four-digit number must be written on each page of their short
story)
 Outside the large envelope they must attach the Envelope Form(*2) which includes their
pseudonym, their four-digit number, the indication for Lower or Upper School and
English or Greek
