Wakulla Chamber and You: Partners For Success PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY June 2015 Wakulla County Chamber OUR PREMIER MEMBERS Preserving the Past…….Planning for the Future www.wakullacountychamber.com President’s Message Greetings Wakulla! The excitement continues this month! TCC’s Wakulla Environmental Institute is under construction, and we are certainly looking forward to the new facility being open! The WEI also just announced a new program that focuses on how to use aerial, surface, and underwater unmanned vehicles (drones). These tools are being used in countless applications, and TCC is bringing the training opportunity right here to Wakulla. I want to thank the WEI leadership for it efforts and dedication to our area. The 2015 Wakulla County Job Fair was extremely well attended. There were more than 200 job seekers and 19 employers! I appreciate CareerSource Capital Region for hosting this event. I would like to thank the County for allowing us to use the Community Center for the event, and I would like to most importantly thank the participants of the event. I hope that the event helpful and beneficial for the job seekers and the employers. In closing, I would like to remind everyone of the Customer Service Workshop held on June 10 at the Wakulla Career Center (2932 Crawfordville Hwy) from 3:30 to 5:00. I would also like to extend a very special thank you to all of our new members! Respectfully, Alan Wise NETWORKING LUNCHEON @ Posey’s A big round of applause was given to the Posey family for hosting our monthly networking luncheon. As expected, we had great turn-out. After all, who would want to will miss a buffet style luncheon, salad, shrimp, catfish, chicken fingers, slaw and grits, and hush puppies, at Posey’s Steam Room and Oyster Bar. Mary announced new members Homestead Imprinted Sportswear, and Lew Moore with Prime Meridian Bank. Lew introduced his guest, Amanda Darvill, also employed by the bank. Chris Russell introduced Chris Oglesby, who will begin a new career with Residential Elevators next week. Chris hopes to be able to participate more in chamber activities. Dee Shriver introduced one of her new realtors, Scott Schubitz. Chris Phillips brought a guest, Darcy Morningstar, who incidentally handles credit card processing for Prime Meridian Bank. It was also the first time attending a luncheon for Alaine Solburg with Ochlockonee Bay Realty. Welcomed back from maternity leave was Megan Picht with United Way of the Big Bend. Commissioner Thomas invited Jeff Shanks. Jeff is an archeologist with the National Park Service, and reported on news about an archeological site close to St. Marks Refuge. Excavation of a 1500 year old Indian village has been in process for about two years now. The site will be nominated to be added as a National Historic Landmark, another gem to add to our tourist attractions. It is a ways off, but as time flies, Mickey Cantner reminded everyone of the Stone Crab festival in October, along with encouraging sponsorships for the festival. The monthly spotlight was on our Sheriff’s Department, presented by Detective Randy Phillips. Did you know the Wakulla Sheriff’s office was established in 1845? Our local Sheriff’s Department’s 146 employees have a lot going on covering 606.42 square miles, and protecting 31,432 (in 2014) residents. Detective Phillips gave an overview of all the different departments that protect our citizens, from the deputies on road patrol, to CID, Corrections, administrative, communications, maintenance, training, youth and community services, and equipment. New for the Sheriff Department are the “Community Communications” bi-monthly meetings with residents throughout Wakulla County. If you have any questions or concerns, this is where they can be addressed on a personal level. The next meeting will take place in Shell Point. Edwin G. Brown & Associates will be spotlighted at our June luncheon. Our cash drawing was won by Chris Russell. We want to thank the following for donations to our drawing: Cook Insurance, Petra Shuff, Lionel Dazevedo, SuperLube, Posey’s, Wakulla Insurance, The Wakulla News, FairyTales Weddings and Special Events Services, and Wakulla Medical Center. 2 2015 Wakulla Job Fair hosted by: The 2015 first ever Wakulla Job Fair, hosted by CareerSource Capital Region, in conjunction with Wakulla County and the chamber, attracted 19 employers looking to recruit talent for available positions.
