Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Purchase the book, Great American Short Stories, edited by Wallace and Mary Stegner (red, white and blue cover) ISBN 0-440-33060-2 **Feel free to check used bookstores or online sources. Read the first three selections and your choice of any three others to read (6 total). Annotate two specified stories (see below). You need to read: 1. "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving 2. "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne 3. "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe 4. Your choice 5. Your choice 6. Your choice Be ready to boldly go where Hawthorne and Poe have gone before in terms of word choice and sentence structure: From both “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” annotate 5 (five) literary elements such as character, tone, and theme, and then comment on the author’s purpose or the effect on the reader for each point annotated – 10 total notes for both stories. To annotate means “to mark,” and you may choose several ways to do this: o Write annotations in a journal or on sticky notes o Make notes directly in the margins of your book o Highlight or underline sentences or passages in your book We will assign and discuss the written analysis during the first week of school, so bring your annotated copy of the stories to our first day of class.
