“Dear Mr. Purves, I am exceedingly sorry but I am afraid your letter has reached
me just too late for us to arrange to see each other. I am writing from my London
studio where I have been for a few days, but I return to the country tomorrow
morning and am not likely to be here again till the 20th. If by any lucky chance
your
wanderings

you anywhere near
Amberley (Sussex) I

this neighbourhood

well, mentioning her mother’s and her own bad health: “I couldn’t do much house
work and illustrating too, and the latter was truly most important... Please do not
worry about it breaking in upon my work or rest... I would gladly give up a day of
work for the privilege of attending the gathering and occasionally I have missed
my rest.” Sterrett became seriously ill and was forced to stop illustrating for
several years. Signatures and autograph material by Sterrett are almost nonexistent making this an important copy as well as a magnificent one. $1850.00

WONDERFUL RUTH PLUMLY THOMPSON LETTER & MAP OF OZ
551.THOMPSON,RUTH PLUMLY. LETTER. This is a full page typed letter
signed by Thompson, dated April 28 1962. It is done on pictorial Royal Historian
of Oz stationary that has 3 Oz illustrations on the front and printed with a list
of 36 printed Oz titles on the back (with some ink corrections in Thompson’s
hand). The text of the letter deals with the Oz books and reveals what a nice
person she was - taking the time to respond to a young fan. It reads: Dear
Connie, I enjoyed your letter as much as you enjoy my Oz books and it was so nice
to have a picture of you and that wonderful dog. This map [referring to the Land
of Oz map sold with the letter] needs
some of the new countries added but
may amuse you anyway. I never did
meet Frank Baum, though I read all
of his books when I was a little girl
so that writing the new adventures
seemed just like visiting the merry
old country. I may write another
book or two, so many boys and girls
have written begging me to return to
Oz. Have been doing stories for Jack
& Jill and many other interesting
things. So lovely out today, I just
cannot stay indoors another minute.
So with a big hug and thank you will
wind up this little note. A happy
spring time to you and many merry
wishes from Oz and Yours Cheerfully,
ME” Signed. The letter is even in
the original Reilly & Lee envelope!

552.THOMPSON,RUTH PLUMLY. LETTER TO JOHN R. NEILL. This is a one
page typed letter signed by Thompson with handwritten notes, dated January
17, 1936. It is done on pictorial Royal Historian of Oz stationary that has 2
Oz illustrations on the front
(bottom edge trimmed). The
text of the letter deals with
the Oz books and Thompson’s
relationship with the Baum
family. It reads in part: “ I feel
terribly sorry and disgusted to
have the Oz books fade out like
they are doing. I tried awfully
hard with the one you have now
to illustrate. Let’s make it a
corker!
With times getting
better I believe the books
will sell again (if those birds in
Chicago would only do a bit of
advertising or publicity!)... I
stopped in to see Mr. Wish but
he did not want to handle the
Oz stuff unless we could get
Mrs. Baum to combine with me
which is very unlikely.”$950.00

Helen & Marc Younger
SIGNED BY WYETH AND RAWLINGS
596.(WYETH,N.C.)illus. THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. NY:
Charles Scribner’s Sons 1939 (1939 A). 4to, bluish-green cloth, top edge gilt,
Fine condition in matching chemise with leather label and publisher’s blue slip
case (case slightly rubbed on edges else sound and VG+). LIMITED TO ONLY
750 COPIES FOR SALE-SIGNED BY BOTH WYETH AND RAWLINGS. Two
interesting facts have emerged about this edition. First, although 750 copies
were printed, only 520 copies were actually bound and sent out with the binding,
chemise and slip case of this version. The remaining 250 copies were bound in dark
blue cloth with a darker blue slipcase and were distributed in the early 1950’s.
Secondly, according to letters from Rawlings to her editor, as the limited edition
sheets were being printed she discovered that there was a line missing on page
196 (between lines 5 and 6). A new signature with the correction was inserted
but not before some sheets were distributed. This copy has the corrected
pages. (We also have had a copy of the later binding with the earlier mis-printed
sheets so there is no rhyme or reason as to how they managed this error).
Illustrated by Wyeth with pictorial endpapers, 14 full page color illustrations,
title page decoration, plus 2 special charcoal and wash full page illustrations
done for this limited edition. Also included is a facsimile of a 2 page letter by
Wyeth discussing the book (not present in the trade edition). Wyeth reportedly
traveled to Cross Creek, Rawlings’ home, before beginning the artwork, in order
to capture the essence of the area. Very scarce. Allen p. 216. $4250.00
