p r o d u c e d b y d e s i g n b y Andrea Boschetti tribute to moscow lamps collection MENDELEEV LAMP M O S C O W T R I B U T E LAMPS COLLECTION TRIBUTE TO MOSCOW is a first, small but precious triad of lamp collections that are inspired by different periods and historical atmospheres of the great Russia: from the classical and romantic years of the turn of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth century, represented by an undeniably extraordinary character as AlexanderPushkin; to the positivist and scientific period, dating back to a century later, which definitely had Dimitrij Mendeleev as one of its prominent, avant-garde representatives; and finally the dark and bloody Thirties of the Twentieth century, i.e. the harshest period of the Communist propaganda: one of its most prominent exponents – if only for the enormous territorial transformation projects attributed to him during the regime – was Lazar Kaganovic. The lamps are the result of a careful philological work of interpretation – in a contemporary key – of chandeliers, street lamps and lights that lit up many different places during those periods; at the same time they are an attempt to look back at and bring back to life the soul and spirit of those places with an elegant, luxurious and contemporary taste. Tribute of Moscow is also an exercise of vision, a journey back in time to make history still livable and usable, in some cases even futuristic. This is the reason of the coupling of each collections with the most representative characters of those times, from whom the three concepts – namely Puskin, Mendeleev, Kaganovich – take inspiration. Russia and the city of Moscow are inexhaustible sources of culture, history and creativity, so much so that more collections inspired by other characters are yet to come. D M I T R I J IVANOVICH MENDELEEV Dmitrij Ivanovič Mendeleev (1834-1907) was a Russian chemist, inventor of the periodic table. Unlike other previous contributors to the table, Mendeleev devised a new classification system that included yet undiscovered elements. The importance of Mendeleev’s periodic table and predictions was recognized years later, after the discovery of the scandium, gallium and germanium elements, which filled some empty places left in the table since they possessed the physical properties their position required. The scientist was born in Siberia from a poor family that ran a small glass factory. Not surprisingly the melting glass and the nocturnal glow of the factory stuck forever in Dmitrij’s mind. In 1849 the Mendeleev family moved to St. Petersburg. Here he entered the Main Pedagogical Institute in 1850, and went on to become a Chair Professor in 1867. Since then he has begun his project that was renown all over the scientific world as “Mendeleev’s periodic table”. HISTORICAL IMAGE - MENDELEEVSKAYA, MOSCOW UNDERGROUND STATION The MENDELEEV collection is obviously inspired by the great scientist and his crucial research related to the classification of the elements. The collection takes inspiration from the lamp designed in 1988 by the designers Nina Alexandrovna and Natalya k. Samoilova, who created an extraordinary repetitive composition of neon bars in the station of the Moscow underground dedicated to the St. Petersburg scientist (Mendeleevskaya). This composition, which fills the space of the long gallery, looks like the materialization of a chemical-mathematical formula, turning into a tribute to the positivist period of the imperial Russia and also to Russian scientific avant-garde. Mendeleev is not a common lamp, but a contemporary constellation characterized by countless small LED fireflies, which becomes a luxurious shimmering chandelier suitable for special and prestigious places.
