Fifty years ago, Amelia Earhart was the lirsl person to fly solo from Hawaii to the Mainland
She took off from Honolulu January 11,1935 and landed at Oakland California January 12. To
commemorate this feat, 100 of the original 1963 Amelia Earhart eight-cent First Day Covers
were canceled at Honolulu (with the Hawaiian statehood stamp) January 11 (50 years later)
and recanceled (with another appropriate stamp) at Oakland on the 12th.

ask. G ood question. C T A F sta n d s for C o m m o n Traffic A dvisory

D irectory for any airport in the U S. S o m etim es it is th e sam e as th e
U nicom frequency, an d so m etim es it is a different frequency. E ach
airport has an assigned freq u en cy . If an airp lan e is landing a t an
unfamiliar airport, th e pilot c a n easily dial th e c o rre c t frequency for
either airport advisories o r landing in stru ctio n s — if th e C T A F is
painted on th e ram p o r building in a p ro m in en t location. Y our B oard

U S P F T C ouncil. W e are raising m oney with
th e h o p e of paying th e U S te a m ’s e x p e n se s,
as well as covering e x p e n se s for th e W orld
C ham pionship.
M ost c h a p te rs charged only a sm all fee
an d a b so rb e d so m e of th e c o s ts of th e 14
local rallies held in th e U S last fall. C o n ­
te s ta n ts will pay a larger en try fee at regional
and national rallies, w hich will help with
so m e of th e e x p e n se s. H a ts off to all c h a p ­
te rs th a t h av e “ b ra v e d th e u n k n o w n ” an d
held a rally! A t least o n e has held three!
It is im p o rtan t th a t a s m any rallies as
p o ssib le b e h eld in th e U S this spring. All
pilots sh o u ld know th a t th e re will b e a U S
te a m e n te re d in th e W orld C ham pionship.

ev ery w h ere by 99s, we know n o t all will have
given th e W orld P recision Flight C o m p e ti­
tion th eir first priority. B ut this y ear is
im p o rtan t! W e n e e d en o u g h rallies th ro u g h ­
o u t th e U S to b e able to say “th e b e st we
have a re o n o u r te a m .”

a n d tissu e analy ses c a n tell u s w hether or
n o t m any ty p es of d ru g s, p o iso n s an d gases
a re p re se n t. W h en biochem ical factors are
ruled o u t, th e c a u se of th e accident is
n arro w ed dow n to th e a re a of psycho­
logical/behavioral/ em otional factors.
A lthough th e pilot’s ac tio n s a re often
re fe rre d to a s “pilot e rro r” o r “poor judg­
m e n t,” in reality it is pilot behavior.
In ap p ro p riate pilot behavior is considered
to b e an y p a tt e r n o f b e h a v io r th a t is
p o te n tially se lf-d e s tru c tiv e . It th e re fo re
follows th a t a p p ro p ria te beh avior is that
w hich will e n h a n ce safety an d survival.
T h e fo rces of s tre s s a n d coping play an
im p o rta n t ro le in th e p ilo t’s b eh av io r.
P sychological stre ss e s a re th o se forces that
t h r e a te n to d is o rg a n iz e a n individual’s
p s y c h ic e q u ilib riu m . T h e c a p a c ity for
a d e q u a te a d a p ta tio n to c h an g e, o r to the
s tre s s th e c h an g e c re a te s , is know n as
coping ability.
T h e a m o u n t of coping ability an individual
h a s varies from tim e to tim e, depending
u p o n th e e x te n t th a t o th e r s tre ss e s place
d e m a n d s o n th e individual. If th e pilot is
c o n su m e d w ith o th e r stre ss e s, such as

Hawaii’s pioneer aviators, M arguerite b egan h e r professional avia­
tion c a re e r in 1939 with th e founding of h er G a m b o Flying S erv ice at
H o n o lu lu ’s J o h n R o d g e rs F ield (n o w H o n o lu lu In te rn a tio n a l
A irport). S h e w as H awaii’s first w om an to b e co m e a com m ercial
pilot, to beco m e a flight in stru c to r an d to o p e ra te a flight school.
In recognition of h er p e rso n a l efforts to p ro m o te aviation as a
c a re e r field for both m en and w om en, M arguerite w as h o n o re d by
A loha C h a p te r with th e ded icatio n of a p laque b earin g h e r n am e at
th e International F o rest of F riendship in 1978.
O n D ecem b er 7,1941, M arg u erite’s flying school activities w ere
halted abruptly. S he w as flying with a s tu d e n t o v er th e island of
O ah u w hen Ja p a n e s e fighter plan es su d d en ly cam e flying by. A s sh e
recalled, “T he A rm y Air C o rp s h ad b een holding a lot of sim ulated
a ttack s, and I th o u g h t they w ere certainly g etting realistic.” W hen
sh e saw sm o k e at K an eo h e N aval Air S tatio n , sh e b e cam e
suspicious an d re tu rn e d to h e r h om e field ju st in tim e to ta k e cover
in a ditch while th e field w as strafed.
N ot long after th at, M arg u erite d ecid e d to join th e newly form ed
W om en A irforce Service Pilots (W A SP) organ izatio n , b u t before
sh e m ad e it to C h erry P oint, N o rth C aro lin a, sh e w as sidelined in
C alifornia b e c a u se flight in stru c to rs w ere n e e d e d m o re th a n ferry
pilots. S h e b ecam e chief flight in stru c to r for P ierce Flying S ch o o l at
N ogales, A rizona, training A rm y an d N avy pilots.
T h e re sh e m et h u sb an d R o b ert W ood, a n d after th e w ar they
re tu rn e d to Hawaii. M arguerite con v in ced th e U niversity of Hawaii
to let her te a c h a ground sch o o l c o u rse . By p o p u lar d e m an d to have
a flying school for v eteran s to ta k e a d v an ta g e of th e “GI Bill,”
M arguerite s ta rte d her seco n d flying sch o o l — th e H aw aiian S chool
of A eronautics.
In 1952, h er h u sb an d w as tra n sfe rre d to G e rm a n y . S h e sold her
school and tu rn e d the h an g ars o v er to th e T errito ry of Hawaii with
th e proviso th a t th e tw o h a n g a rs w ould alw ays b e re s e rv e d for th e
use of general aviation.
W hen th e W o o d s re tu rn e d to H onolulu from E u ro p e, “M a,” as
sh e h ad b een n ick n am ed by h e r m ale s tu d e n ts , le a rn ed th a t th e
h an g ars w ere to be u sed for airline freight o p e ra tio n s. W hen sh e
raised a fuss ab o u t it, sh e w as told s h e ’d h av e to “co m e o u t of
re tire m e n t” and tak e over m an ag e m en t of th e tw o h an g ars. S o she
estab lish ed H awaii’s C o u n try C lu b of th e Air, leasing sp a c e to flying
clubs an d o th e rs. H er o p e ra tio n b e ca m e FAA a n d VA a p p ro v e d for
flight training.

p re s e n te d a m o st en tertain in g an d inform ative p ro g ram at the
c h a p te r’s regular m eeting only tw o w eek s earlier. Still active as a
ju m p in stru c to r, he d e m o n s tra te d th e o p e ra tio n a n d packing of
p a ra c h u te s, using 66 K ath leen M asters a s a m odel. H e laughingly
re m a rk e d th a t K ath leen , 4'11", d id n ’t look d o w n o n him. H e left us
w ith an invitation to join him in a p a ra c h u te ju m p , prom ising a soft
landing, “even for g ra n d m o th e rs.”

D uring six m o n th s of planning, four m e e t­
ings w ere held by th e A ero sp ace C o m m ittee
and th e S co u t C ouncil. Included w as a to u r
of th e airport and p ro p o sed activity sites.
T h e S co u t C ouncil h andled all th e b a c k ­
ground publicity an d recruiting of th e girls
and leaders. T h e 99s ch o se five ev en ts,
cleared the p ro ject with th e airp o rt m a n ­
ager, tow er chief an d FB O , pick ed th e
com m ercial airline, re q u e ste d a 4 0 -p assen ­
ger plane with a flight a tte n d a n t, an d clea red
with th e statio n m anager for a to u r of
re se rv a tio n s, tick et c o u n te r an d baggage
handling. P erm issio n w as g ra n te d to ta k e

alw ays w anted to skydive, b u t a re relu ctan t to jum p o u t of a plane by
yourself.

T his is how tan d em jum ping w orks: T h e p a ssen g e r, w earing a
h a rn e ss, is h o o k e d in (w ith m etal a tta c h m e n ts a n d safety locks) at
four points to th e front of th e ju m p m a s te r’s h a rn e s s an d stra p p e d in
tightly. B oth w ear goggles a n d so m e ty p e of helm et. T h ey exit th e
plane at 7,000 feet an d fly th ro u g h th e air for eight to 10 seco n d s.
T he ju m p m aster pulls th e re c tan g u la r p ara c h u te . A bout 400 sq u a re
feet of fabric designed to c arry m o re th a n 400 p o u n d s, it’s a larger
version of a military p a ra c h u te d esigned to carry a 200-pound
ju m p er with 150 p o u n d s of gear. A re se rv e p a ra c h u te of th e sam e
size is also p ack ed in th e rig w orn o n th e ju m p m a ste r’s back.
M ost first ju m p s req u ire a day of in stru ctio n , b u t training for a
tan d e m jum p ta k e s only 15 o r 20 m inutes.
T h e first o n e to go w as La C roix. S h e d o n n e d a jum psuit, goggles
an d soft helm et, a n d stra p p e d herself into th e h a rn ess. Ferrell
h o o k ed h e r into his h a rn e ss an d ex plained th a t sh e should place her
h a n d s a c ro s s h e r c h e st w hen th ey left th e plane, keeping her legs
to g e th e r an d b en t b ack b e tw een his. W h en th e c a n o p y o p en ed , she
w as to g ra sp th e h an d le s o n th e ste erin g toggles below the
ju m p m a ste r’s h andles. Ferrell w ould show h e r how to tell the
d ifference b e tw e en a good an d a b a d p a ra c h u te a n d te a c h h er to
ste e r th e c an op y . (M ost sk y d iv ers d o n ’t u se ro u n d p arach u tes
an y m o re; th e sq u a re , o r ram air, can o p ie s can b e ste e re d an d stalled
like a wing so th a t ju m p ers can m ak e tip to e landings.)
Ferrell also ex plained em erg en cy p ro c e d u re s. If th e p arach u te
d id n ’t o p e n properly, he w ould tell h e r to assu m e th e exit position as
he jettiso n ed th e m ain p a ra c h u te an d pulled th e reserve.

said ), b u t sh e h ad to wait for th e C alifornia fog hovering at 2,000 feet

h e r m o th er, a n d d isap p o in te d th a t sh e co u ld n ’t go. (FAA regula­
tions prohibit p eo p le u n d e r 18 from doing a ta n d em skydive, a rule
th a t w e’re trying to get c h an g ed . A fter all, stu d e n t pilots can be 14
y ears old.)
Finally, th e clo u d s dissipated. Ferrell an d La C roix h o o k ed up and
w alked to g e th e r in b ack w ard strid e to th e C e ssn a 182. (Modified for
jum ping, it h ad only o n e se a t for th e pilot). La C roix laughed the
w hole way. R aylene clim bed in b ehind th e pilot so sh e could w atch
h e r m o th er, while Ferrell an d L a C ro ix sa t n ex t to th e pilot on the
floor. A bout 10 m in u tes later, at 7,000 feet, Ferrell o p e n e d the door.
“It w as like b eing o n to p of a m o u n tain in w in te r,” L a C roix said
later.
T hey tu rn e d to p u t th eir legs o u t th e do o r. “A re you ready?”
Ferrell yelled. La C ro ix grinned an d n odded.
T hey d ro p p e d o u t of th e plane an d , a b o u t eight se co n d s later,
Ferrell o p e n e d th e p a ra c h u te at a b o u t 6,000 feet. “I e x p ected a big

She an d Ferrell sailed th ro u g h th e sk ies for an eight o r ninem inute ride u n d er th e brightly co lo red c an o p y . T h ey s te e re d th e
p arac h u te a ro u n d in circles an d th e n to w a rd a field n e a r th e
hangars, gently sw ooping out of th e sky a n d sliding to th e earth .
Everyone else did stand-up landings.
Je a n e tte Bell said later, “My h e a rt w as really going before we got
out, but 1 w asn’t scared . I could get h o o k ed . I loved it!”
Bell’s d au g h ter, S herry S h etle r (w ho is w orking o n h e r pilot’s
license), w as w ide-eyed and smiling after sh e landed. S h e said, “T h at
do esn’t co m pare to anything I’ve ev er d o n e .”
A fter sh e re tu rn e d to e arth , Linda S w an ch irp ed . “T h a t’s fun. I’d
do it again! H ey, Bill (h er b ro th e r), w a n n a go ju m p ? T a k e a flying
leap? It’s so m uch fun!” H er b ro th e r, Bill P a rk e r, w ho h a d co m e to
w atch, also m ade a tan d em jum p, a s did his wife.
M ary B ovee, never an e n th u s ia st for th e sp o rt an d initially
reluctant to see d au g h ter R obin jum p, o b se rv e d th e re a c tio n s of h er
fellow m em b e rs an d said in a sm all voice, “Well, m ay b e.” W e all
en c o u ra g e d h e r to try it, a n d th e n ex t thing sh e knew , sh e was
w earing a jum psuit an d listening to Ferrell give h er instructions.
“ My kids will think I’m c ra z y ,” sh e said. “A 53-year-old w om an
skydiving."
S h e w as terrified. “It’s just th a t first ste p ...” sh e k e p t m uttering.
B ut ev ery o n e rem in d ed h er of how m u ch fun it w ould be after she
m ade th e first step.
“ It’s no scarier th a n yo u r first solo flight,” said Bell.

While th ere, she w as also o n e of th e flight
crew m aking th e historic 60,000th landing of
th e 727. B ut, m u ch m o re th a n th a t, M arion
also e a rn e d th e distinction of b eco m in g th e
first w om an air carrier airm an certification
in sp ecto r in th e co u n try , co n d u c tin g airm an
certification in th e B oeing 727.
M arion’s c a re e r has b ee n filled w ith su ch
su ccesse s. D uring the early 1960s, sh e cam e
to w ork for th e FAA as a se c re ta ry in th e
W estern-Pacific R egion’s Flight S ta n d a rd s
Division. “I cam e to th e FAA right o u t of
high sch o o l,” M arion recalls, “ w hen they
had a recru itm en t drive.”
A fter a few years, M arion w ent o u tsid e
th e FAA to p u rs u e a b u sin e ss c a re e r in th e
challenging a e ro s p a c e in dustry. By 1973,
sh e had achieved an e n try level m a n a g e­
m ent position. B ut it w asn ’t until 1967 th a t
M arion co m p leted h e r pilot training an d
received her private pilot certificate.
In 1975, M arion left th e a e ro s p a c e in­
d u stry to actively p u rsu e an aviation career.
S h e th en co m p leted th e ed u catio n al ste p s
req u ired for a co m m ercial pilot w ith ratings
for airplanes, single engine an d m ultiengine
land and in stru m en ts, an d sh e w ent o n to
obtain all flight in stru cto r ratings, earn in g an
airline tra n sp o rt pilot certificate. By now she
w as w o rk in g a s a full-tim e p ilo t, b o th
instructing in all pilot training p ro g ram s an d
ferrying new pro d u ctio n aircraft th ro u g h o u t
th e continental U nited S tate s.
D uring her c a re e r in aviation, M arion has
acquired several th o u sa n d h o u rs of flight
ex p erien ce in a diverse sp e c tru m of aircraft,
including all c u rre n t U S p ro d u ctio n single
a n d m u ltie n g in e a ir c ra ft u n d e r 12,500
p o u n d s. In addition, sh e h as flown several
large m u ltiengine a irc ra ft, in clu d in g th e
SA227 M etro III, N o rth A m erican Rockwell

In 1982, M arion b e c a m e actively involved

S o far, sh e ad m its sh e h a s h ad very little
tim e for o u tsid e in te re sts. “I d o love to hike
a n d sk i,” sh e say s, “ a n d h o p e to have m ore
tim e in th e fu tu re to d e v o te to th e s e
a c tiv itie s.” S h e is a lso in te re s te d in oil
painting an d plans to ren ew h er efforts in
this field in th e n e ar future.

h ave a g rea t c a re e r,” sh e says, “and I
th oroughly enjoy m y jo b a n d th e people 1

Allingham, ow ners an d re sid e n ts of th e
Amelia E arh art B irthplace, died within four
days of e ach o th e r. T h ey w ere b o th g reat
ad m irers of w om en in aviation an d , m ost
particularly, T h e N inety-N ines, Inc.
D uring F o re st of F riendship celeb ratio n s
e ach y ear, th ey o p e n e d th eir h o m e to th e
99s. It w as th o u g h t by m o st of th e to w n s­
p e o p le of A tc h iso n , K a n s a s th a t so m e
provision w ould be m ad e in th eir will for th e
hom e to be d o n a te d to us. H o w ev er, th a t
did not h ap p en . T he h o m e w as left to 10
different relatives to sh a re o r d isp o se of as
th ey saw fit. William Stillings, a tto rn e y for
th e e sta te , w as ch arg ed with c a re of th e
hom e until it could be sold.
In J u n e of 1984, Mr. Stillings c o n ta c te d
m e to offer th e h o u se for sale to th e NinetyN ines. I re fe rre d him to th e n P re sid e n t

buying th e house.
A t th a t tim e, M r. Stillings told u s th e

th a t it w ould pro b ab ly n eed at least a n o th e r
$100,000 for re sto ra tio n . T h e w hole p ro ject
se e m e d “o u t of th e q u e stio n ” financially, but
w e really felt it sh o u ld b e p re s e rv e d as a
m u se u m an d n o t slip into th e h a n d s of an
individual o w n er w ho m ight n o t w ish to
s h a re it w ith u s o r th e public. W e d ecid e d to
p re s e n t th e facts to th e In tern atio n al B o ard
of D ire c to rs at th e A n c h o rag e C o n v en tio n
in A ugust.

friend, Dr. E ugene J. B ribach, to buy th e
hom e and d o n a te it to us. H e th o u g h t it
so u n d ed like a good idea, but h e w a n te d to
be su re th a t it w ould be m an ag e d p ro p erly ,
th at it w ould alw ays be a m u seu m d e d ic a ted
to p reserving AE’s nam e an d A m erica’s
av ia tio n h e rita g e . H e w a n te d to m e e t
som eone from th e N inety-N ines b efo re he
would agree to buy th e house.
O n S e p te m b e r 1 8 ,1 m et D r. B rib ach an d
spent tw o h o u rs talking with him, aw are th a t
he w as giving m e a te s t of so rts. I g u e ss I
passed his test b ec a u se he decid e d to buy
th e h o u se th a t day an d p re s e n t it to u s as a
gift. H e w as eventually able to p u rc h a s e th e
house for $90,000, so he decided to d o n a te
the e x tra $10,000 to u s to begin resto ratio n .
Dr. B ribach, a w onderful, delightful m an,
w as 102 y ears old w hen I first m et him. H e
would have b een 103 o n N ew Y e a r’s D ay of
1985; u n fo rtu n ately , h e died D ec em b er 1 3 .1
a tten d ed his funeral serv ices, w ith a g reat
deal of sa d n e ss, a s a re p re sen tativ e of th e
N inety-N ines. H e w as a n inspiring g en tle­
m an, a p erfect exam ple of age with dignity,
charm , intelligence an d grace. I wish ea ch of
you had had th e o p p o rtu n ity to m eet him.
His m em ory, as well as A m elia’s, will live on
forever th ro u g h us.

its th ird local rallye since th e n . L ast April 21,
of 14 c o n te s ta n ts, seven w ere w om en; on
D ecem b er 1, five of th e eight c o n te s ta n ts
w ere 99s. E a ste rn N ew E ngland C h a p te r
e n th u s ia stic a lly h a n d le d 15 c o n te s ta n ts
O c to b e r 13. C o n n ecticu t C h a p te r’s local
rallye is sch ed u led for M arch 2, a n d R e­
gion 7 is well on its way.
I e lec ted to be a c o n te s ta n t for L ong
Island’s D e c e m b e r rallye. T h e C AV U c o n ­
ditions m a d e th e 103-nm navigation event
sh o rt a n d crisp, a n d th e a c c u ra c y landings
m o st challenging, especially th e pow er-off
d u e to g u sty c ro ssw in d s co m b in ed with
traffic. My ch e c k pilot m ad e my day w hen he
said, “I’ll fly with you any tim e, c o m e fly with
m e .” My g u ess... w e h av e th e ch e ck pilots
nailed d o w n tight for o u r n e x t rallye as
co m p etito rs.

Two ‘musts’for Baltimore Convention-goers

million. Ever since it o p e n e d July 1, 1976, th e S m ith so n ian ’s
N ational Air and S p a c e M u seu m h a s b een W a sh in g to n ’s m o st
p opular to u rist attractio n . It’s easy to see why.
T w en ty -th ree exhibit a re a s h o u se artifa c ts ranging from th e
W right b ro th e rs ’ original 1903 Flyer to A m elia E a rh a rt’s L o c k h e ed
V ega a n d L indbergh’s “Spirit of S t. L ouis” to a S kylab o rbital
w o rk sh o p . Included in th e 200,000 sq u a re feet of exhibit s p a c e a re
d o zen s of airplanes, sp a c e c ra ft, m issiles, ro c k e ts, en g in es an d flight
in stru m en ts. D isplays are designed to inform an d e d u c a te th e visitor
in an enjoyable way. F o r ex am p le, a re-creatio n of an aircraft carrie r
d eck allows visitors to th e Sea-A ir O p e ra tio n s G allery to w itness
landings an d takeoffs while stan din g in a facsimile of th e c a rrie r’s
co n tro l tow er. In the Hall of Flight T echn o lo g y , a P ra tt an d W hitney
R985 W asp piston engine th a t h a s b e e n cu t th ro u g h to e x p o se its
inner w orkings is run by an electric m o to r to show th e o p e ra tio n s of
th e pistons, valves, co n n ectin g ro d s a n d o th e r p arts.
T h e cen tral glass-roofed gallery facing th e mall is d e d ic a ted to
M ilestones of Flight. H ere th e m u seu m h o u se s sev eral historic an d
priceless craft, including th e W right Flyer, C h u c k Y e ag er’s Bell X -1,
L indbergh’s “Spirit of St. L o u is,” G le n n ’s M ercury sp acesh ip ,
“F riendship 7,” and th e Apollo 11 c o m m an d m odule, “C olum bia,”
u sed by A rm strong, Aldrin an d C ollins in th eir lunar flight.
It’s an ex tra o rd in a ry sight. S ide by side a re aircraft, ro c k e ts a n d
sp a c e c ra ft, all of w hich w ere built in th e 20th cen tu ry , and all of
w hich ch an g e d th e co u rse of h istory. H e re is a fragile aircraft w hose
first flight la sted a m ere 12 se c o n d s a n d a silver m onoplane that
carrie d its sole p a sse n g e r a c ro s s th e A tlantic in 33 a n d a half hours
at altitudes of 10 to 10,000 feet. H ere is th e ex p erim en tal aircraft that
first p e n e tra te d th e so u n d b arrier, flying at 700 m p h an d 43,000 feet,
a s well a s a sp a ce c ra ft th a t carried th e first A m erican into orbit
a ro u n d th e e a rth . A nd h e re is th e c o m m an d m odule th a t took m en
to th e m oon a n d b ro u g h t th e m b a c k again.
It’s p re tty heady stuff to view th e se M ilestones of Flight, but
th e re ’s m u ch m o re to see . N inety-N ines will w ant to visit the
P io n eers of Flight G allery, w h ere A m elia E a rh a rt’s L o ckheed Vega
is on display. AE u sed this V ega in 1932 for tw o historic flights — the
first solo flight by a w om an a c ro s s th e A tlantic an d th e first solo flight
by a w o m an a c ro s s th e U n ited S ta te s. T h re e y e a rs later she flew a
similar V ega solo from Hawaii to th e U S m ainland, becom ing the
first p e rso n — m an o r w o m an — to d o so. Also in this gallery is the
W right “Vin F iz,” th e biplane u se d in 1911 to m a k e the first
tra n sc o n tin en ta l flight. T h e o d y ssey to o k 49 days, 69 sto p s (includ­
ing 16 c ra s h e s) a n d 82 h o u rs of flight tim e. T h e pilot w recked the
“Vin F iz” so m any tim es th a t en o u g h sp a re p a rts w ere u sed during
th e trip to build four airp lan es; th e only orig in a l p a rts th a t visitors
se e a re th e ru d d e r an d tw o wing stru ts.
T h e Hall of Air T ra n sp o rta tio n is a n o th e r p o p u lar gallery. H ere
Bill Reese rem oves parts from the Vought-Sikorsky O S 2U -5 Kingfisher before it is
ch e m ic a lly treated a gainst corrosion Flown by the US N avy during W orld War II as a
scout plane, the Kingfisher is currently on exhibit at the Garber facility
The m ilitary version of Pan Am erican Airw ays' "Baby C lipper," the Sikorsky JRS-1
flying boat served the US Navy during World War II as a patrol bom ber and transport.
The only one of its kind to survive the war. this JRS-1 is on exhibit and awaiting
restoration at the Paul E. Garber Preservation. Restoration and Storage Facility
visitors can see a D C-3 hung from th e m u se u m ’s ceiling. At 17,500
pounds, it’s th e h eaviest aircraft s u p p o rte d by th e m u seu m ’s steel
stru c tu re. T his gallery also h o u se s th e N o rth ro p A lpha, a beautiful
silver m onoplane. D esigned by J a c k N o rth ro p , w ho d esigned AE’s
L ockheed V ega, the 1930s A lpha ca rrie d four p a ssen g e rs in a
h eated cabin, while th e pilot sa t ab o v e an d b ehind in an o p en

AUSTRALIAN SECTION
Best wishes fo r Christmas and the New
Year were exchanged am ongst 99s despite
the usual m ail-go-slows and strikes. Elec­
trical storms have caused severe bush fires in
outback NSW, and some members spent the
holidays figh ting to save their properties.
N ancy-Bird Walton, O.B E., was nominated
and accepted to be one of five Honorary
Women of the Year to attend the Women of
the Year Luncheon ce le b ra tin g the 10th
anniversary. The other ladies who found
themselves in Nancy's illustrious company
were Mrs. Babette Stephens, MBE, Dame
Mary Durack, DBE, Dame Beryl Beaurepaire,
DBE, and Dr. Ella Stack, CBE
Victorian 99s farewelled Carol Kitching at
the AWPA Christm as drinks, held as usual at
the T oc-H , T oorak. C arol and Rob have
moved to Sydney. Carol w ill be back in the air
at Bankstown soon.
New 99 Heather Bat has com pleted her
night VMC obtained w ith the assistance of an
AWPA M emorial Grant. Heather manages an
engineering office in Darwin, but she is able
to fly the com pany A36 around the Northern
T erritory on business.

EAST CANADA SECTION
The fall section meeting in Ottawa in midO ctober was a “ capital success.” Fifty-five
99s, 49%ers and friends were treated to our
N ation’s Capital clad in its glorious autumn
finery, although frequently and coyly shroud­
ing herself in fog. Five 99s astutely chose
their tim ing and flew to the meeting. The
program was exciting and rewarding.
At the business meeting, two awards were
announced. The Canadian Museum of Flight
and T ra n sp o rta tio n at R ichm ond, B ritish
Colum bia has been given the Ninety-Nines'
Canadian Award in Aviation fo r its efforts to
promote a greater understanding of Canada's
aviation heritage. This award is given an­
nually on behalf of all Canadian 99s. The
Schermerhorn Award, given to the chapter
with the greatest percentage of members
APT, was won by the First Canadian Chapter
by a fraction of a point over the Eastern
O ntario Chapter.
We toured the David Florida Laboratories
(a division of SPAR Aerospace) where the
Canadarm used on the space shuttle was
tested, and we saw the testing facilities and
satellites in the assembly stage.
The h ig h lig h t of the S aturday evening
banquet was ourentertaining and inform ative
speaker, Frank Kingston Smith, a noted avia­
tio n co lu m n ist and au thor. C hapters ex­
changed ideas in fo u r S unday m o rn in g
com m ittee workshops. To bring the meeting
to a clim atic conclusion, we were treated to

an excellent and very practical presentation

Eastern Ontario Chapter
The section meeting came off w ith ou t a
hitch, and all our members breathed a sigh of
relief. The highlight was the tour of the SPAR
testing laboratories. We were shown the test­
ing chambers and all the intricate testing
equipm ent, as well as several of the com ­
m unication satellites in various stages of
assembly. SPAR is the designer and manu­
facturer of the Canadarm that plays a key role
in the NASA shuttle program. We also viewed
com ponents of the Canadarm that were in the
labs fo r testing.
The N ovem ber m eeting featured guest
speaker Madame G eraldine Vachon, widow
of Romeo Vachon. An early Canadian bush
pilot, Romeo was a pioneer in the air mail
service in Canada. Madame Vachon, who is
now in her 80s, spoke about her husband's
career in aviation and showed photos and
mementos of her husband and the other
pioneer pilots with whom he was associated.

First Canadian Chapter
The O cto b e r m eeting was held at the
Canadian W arplane Heritage Foundation at
H a m ilto n C iv ic A irp o rt. Eleven 99s and
49Vi>ers enjoyed viewing the restored World
War II aircraft and marvelling at the w ork­
manship going into the restoration projects.
One of the most recent and exciting ac­
qu isitio ns has been the MK XII Hurricane —
one of only tw o flyin g Hurricanes in the
world. Some 40 different warplanes are all
either airw orthy or undergoing restoration.
T heir aim is to have one of each type of
aircraft flow n by the RCAF in W orld War II —
in Canadian A irforce markings, of course.
Bram pton Flying Club was host to our
N ovem ber m eeting. We viewed and d is ­
cussed a safety film , "Tim e in Your Tanks,"
and were then treated to a pictorial overview
of Daphne S chiff and Adele Fogle's trip to the
International Convention, from T oronto to
Anchorage in Adele’s Piper Arrow. On a non­
aviation theme, Adele whetted our appetites
fo r international travel with slides from her
recent trip to China.
O ur members and 49Viers celebrated the
festive season together with a potluck dinner
at the home of Gwen and Leslie Hems. This
was a jovial occasion w ith lots to eat and
much news to exchange. G ifts were brought
fo r delivery to the Ronald M cDonald House, a
residence of fam ilies with children in Sick
C hildren's Hospital.
Two work groups are busy organizing the
All-Canada spring section meeting and a May

Central Pennsylvania Chapter
O u r A u g u s t m e e tin g was held at the
sum m er home of M artie and Champ Pool at
Kam pel A irp o rt in D illsb u rg . D ire cto r of
Aviation Charles Hostetter spoke on new
aviation legislation. His m other is a 99, and he
showed us a card from the 99s at the time of
his birth. The September meeting was air
marking the Clearfield Airport, which lays in
the only clear spot in the state A small group
of hearty workers included Mine Edwards,
Janice Miele and Vickie W illiams, as well as
Flo and John Shirey.
November's meeting was held at Lycoming
Air, W illiam sport A irport. Prospective mem­
bers attending included Mary Jo Johnson,
Gail Hoffman and Lou Bowersox. Since we
are responsible fo r registration and goody
bags, plans fo r 1985 Convention duties were
discussed.
Helen Sheffer flew to San Diego for the
WASP Reunion. She later presented the AE
Medal to Russ Brinkley on “ his day" for all the
work he has done fo r the 99s.
Alice Fuchs has been chosen Woman of the
Year by the Silver W ings, and Debbie Bartolet
was married in September.

Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter
O ur September Pennies-a-Pound Day was
blessed with perfect weather and outstanding
success. The Doylestown FBO was very hos­
pitable, even to the point of lending us two
C-172s when we desperately needed them.
Kate Macario was. as usual, the able or­
ganizer. She was assisted by 15 members and
prospectives, as well as eight husbands.
We welcome Pam Sanderson to our chap­
ter. She is a transfer from Idaho, and we are
the beneficiaries of a very helpful member.
O ur only WASP, Anne Shields, went to San
Diego fo r the WASP Reunion, and she reports
that it was the hottest week in San Diego
memory. She had only kind words for the
Aviation Museum and its recovery from fire.
Adelle Bedrossian was lucky enough to be
at the Dayton A ir Show when the NinetyNines were presented with the Spirit of Flight
Award. Adelle has just returned from a trip to
Egypt and Cyprus. She left Cyprus just before
the latest bom bing there, and she got home in
tim e to greet her newest grandson.
Thirteen members attended the fall section
meeting and were delighted to be able to visit
with President Hazel Jones. The W ashington,
D C. Chapter provided an outstanding hos­
pitality room with enough delicious food that
no bo dy w ent o u t fo r d in n e r. T hey also
enjoyed Captain R oberta Russell, whose
program on the effect of drugs, alcohol and
medication on a pilot's mental and physical
capabilities was very impressive. An unex­
pected bonus was being able to watch 18
balloons take off for a race to Manassas.
M argaret Braden, o u r liaiso n w ith the
Pennsylvania A viation Council, reported that
the state legislature has fina lly passed the bill
which (among other things) ensures that
privately owned public-use airports in the
state will now get some tax relief.

Maryland Chapter
We had a booth at the O ctober 27-28
Chesapeake A p p reciation Days at Sandy
Point State Park. Many members participated
in an 11-plane fly-b y Saturday that departed
from Annapolis A irport.
We spent the first two Saturdays in Novem­
ber at F rede rick A irp o rt w o rk in g on air
m arking project. Tw o members from the
Delaware Chapter, Judy Foster and Betty
Wolfe, joined us to help w ith painting taxiw ay
lines and a helicopter circle.
Our chapter has initiated an Achievement
Awards Contest in an effort to boost mem­
bers’ participation. An annual banquet w ill be
held to honor award winners.
Chairman Joan Kosek and Vice-Chairman
Johnetta Hobbs hosted a lovely Christm as
party at Johnetta's home. Ed Kosek per­
formed the initiation ceremony fo r 49'/2ers
Ben Carey and Ron Watson. We were de­
lighted that Lucy Browne, our first 66 to
become a 99, could jo in us. Lucy is now a
member of the C hicago Area Chapter. O ther
guests from C hicago included Bobbie and
Mac McAdam.
We co-sponsored a safety seminar with
local FAA officials December 12 at Martin
State Airport. The seminar was chaired by
Sabrina Kipp, and Marvin Merryman, Jr. gave
an excellent presentation on “ Tips on W inter
P reflight." Gail Heffner was presented with
her Phase II Wings.

Potomac Chapter
It may have been cold and w indy (so what
else is new?) when the Cam bridge air mark­
ing day dawned November 3, but six of us
showed up anyway and made short (rela­
tively!) work o f it (so we could fly to Lee
A irp ort in A nnapolis fo r lunch afterward —
o u r re w a rd !). D isc jo c k e y Tom G au ger
stopped at C a m brid ge on a long cro ss­
country while we were w orking and later gave
us some nice coverage on WMAL.
November 12 was a fly-in lunch-w ith-thebunch at the A ir Transport Command in
W ilm in g to n , Delaware. N in e ty-N in e Judy
Foster met us and provided transportation to
the restaurant.
The night was beautifully clear when we
toured the National A irp o rt radar room and
tow er November 14. We were impressed by
how nice these busy controllers were. They

daughter Marcy, who was inbound in the
rig ht seat on a Suburban flig h t from Phila­
delphia.

subject of insurance was the focus of our
program. Each m em bercam e away with new­
found knowledge of the “ fine print" traps
which can be lurking in even the most un­
s u sp icio u s p o licies. A sum p tu ou s bu ffe t
lunch was prepared by the staff of the airport
restaurant, enabling us to continue inform al
discussion with our speaker on those insur­
ance quirks that hit closest to home.

300 fellow pilots attended the seminar.

Christm as potluck buffet brunch at the home
of Sherree Seaber.

Eastern New England Chapter
We have decided to hold a fly-in each
month to an airport in the region fo r fun and
food. O ur first excursion was scheduled for
O ctober 28 at Barre-H iller Airport. This small
town airpo rt in central Massachusetts serves
incredible delicacies of gourm et quality for
every meal. Much to our chagrin, we awoke
on the m orning of ou r fly-in to zero-zero in
the vicin ity of our planned repast We w ill
keep trying!
Northern New England Chapter
Robert Smith, director of aerospace edu­
cation from M aguire AFB in New Jersey,
came to visit Betty Erickson’s fourth and fifth
grades at Newbury Central School in New­
bury, New Hampshire. He discussed balloon­
ing and the aerodynam ics of flying. The
children received papers on the parts of an
aircraft and the instrum ent panel. The slide
presentation took us from the beginning of
flig h t up to the present day space shuttle.

One hundred G irl Scouts and their leaders
w on't soon forget the November Aviation
Career Day in Manchester. There was Ed
Stead’s Vam pire jet. Some cou ld n't make up

40-passenger airplane and the free peanuts.
Then everyone fell in love with the handsome,
uniform ed, blond CAP cadet. It was great fun
fo r everyone, and we are considering doing it

interlude in the proceedings was provided by
99 Vijayalakshm i Vijayakumar, a native of
Bangalore, India, who performed classical
Indian dances in costume. She is tem porarily
residing in western New York.
O ur new Finger Lakes banner was dedi­

All of the section meeting activity has not
slowed down our flyin g — not a bit! Julie

August launch of the space shuttle, "D is­
covery." Marcia Gitelm an and 49Vier Dave
flew to Calgary in August and toured the
Canadian R ockies. M arcia was return in g
from Florida in O ctober and, at the RaleighDurham A irp o rt, fo llo w e d Jan M o ffe tt in
pattern. Jan was w inging it to Savannah,
Georgia to meet her 49'/2er, Wes.
Chairman Betty Roman has been elected
secretary of the Rochester Pilots Association,
and she also received her FAA Pilot Pro­
ficie ncy Wings. Mary Hunkeler became trea­
surer of the pilots' group. She also earned her
Pilot Proficiency Wings.
We w ill miss G eorgeAnn Garms and 49'/2er
M ickey. Im m ediately after return in g from
Norway, they set out fo r C alifornia. They w ill
reside there fo r a year while Mickey is on
sabbatical. However, in conclusion, we would
like to welcom e back Barbara Flick and 49'/2er
Don. They have returned to our area after
living in Hong Kong for three years. We would

Energetic Janet Leatherdale, Sue Parker,

Dade, Joe McNeil and W ill Dade, painted a

The second annual pennies-a-pound to
fina ncially assist the Mercer C ounty Com ­
m unity College Flight Team, the chapter and
the section turned out to be a very productive
and enjoyable weekend. Ninety-Nines from
several area chapters as well as friends and
relatives joined our members, the college's
aviation students and numerous volunteers
from M arlboro A irp ort fo r two days of nearly
non-stop flyin g. The memories of flig h t w ill
long be w ith the hundreds of happy pas­
sengers we flew, many of whom were taking
their first trip in an airplane.
Diana DeLange treated us to two enjoyable
film s on soaring at our O ctober meeting at
Sky M anor, and we re all ha pp y fo r Pat
Valdata, the proud new owner of a Schweizer
1-26E sailplane. Pat, an avid soaring enthu­
siast, is expanding her horizons to include
power flight!
One of ou r newest and bravest members,
Valerie O 'B rien, USAF, survived Survival
Training! She "volunteered" to put her mind
and body to the test of the elements, and lived
to tell us about it at our November meeting at
M cG uire AFB. Valerie taught us many im­
portant lessons, which we hope she will share
in an article fo r The 99 NEWS.

O ur annual Christm as party was held at
Vice-Chairm an Julie Talbert's house Decem­
ber 12. Attendance was the best ever, with
several 49'/2ers and new members, including
G inny Hart, who has her CFI and gives
lessons at Caldwell A irp ort in Essex, New
Jersey. M ollie Ward from the Los Angeles
Chapter w ill be jo in in g our chapter while she
com pletes her studies at New York Univer­
sity. Chairm an Eleanor Friede prepared a
delicious blanquette de veau accompanied
by Nina Clarem ont's smoked trout fettucine.
Nina also treated us to her unusual and tasty
salmon and caviar mousse.
Several awards were presented — Penny
Am abile fo r having the most hours in two
categories (land and lighter than air); Nina
Clarem ont, the most exotic trip; Julie Talbert,
the trip farthest from home; Irene Keith,
staying current since 1946; and Mollie Ward,
our most recently certified member. Eleanor
Friede received tw o awards, one for owning
the most "h is to ric ” airplane and the other for
ably serving as chairm an the past two yeas.
We also had a good turno ut of 14 pilots at
our November 13 meeting at the Wings Club.

The bubbles flow ed again at the chapter's
November meeting. The celebration was for
Chairman Pat Bizzoso on com pletion of her
m ultiengine rating, which she obtained with
an AE Scholarship. The cham pagne helped
raise the bidding on items at the auction held
that night, w ith m onies raised to be used
toward the bronze "w ing s" plaque pledged to
the Intern ation al H eadquarters expansion
program.
Novem ber 10 saw another successful Ida
Van Smith Flight Clubs Day at Brookhaven
Airport. The turno ut of children was not as
large as expected as the weather service was
predicting one of the worst weekends of the
fall. As it turned out, fo r the third time in as
many m onths, it was wrong and the chapter’s
p ro je ct w ent fo rw a rd . Mae Sm ith, Joyce

Malkmes. Pat Rockwell and new 49VS>er Vince
Bonnard took approxim ately 24 children on
plane rides around the area. Follow ing a
picnic lunch, a balloon launch was con­
ducted. We’re hoping to have at least one
postcard (attached to all balloons) returned
this year. All of last year's balloons quickly
headed out to sea on northerly winds.
December 1 saw brigh t skies w ith many
gusts of wind for the local USPFT com peti­
tion. also held at Brookhaven A irport. Carol
Maffetone was this year’s chairman. The early
morning power-on landings could be done
with some d ifficu lty. O nly a few power-off
landings could be done because of the 90degree weather and gusty crosswind. Later in
the day, after the cross-country portion was
held, a different runway was used to complete
power-on and power-off landings. Of the
eight contestants, our first place winner was
ogue of her m ost recent trip to Kenya, East
Africa. The slide show was a com posite of
experiences Trish had, including a balloon
safari over the Masai Mara Game Reserve.
This was T rish's fou rth trip to A frica but her
first experience in a hot air balloon.

cently became manager of the Rensselaer
C ounty A irport, while Mary Lou is currently
flyin g Cessnas out of Schenectady County

and Dee G reisheimer in an EAA project at
Oshkosh. At the request of EAA, they assisted
in c a ta lo g in g a v ia tio n p u b lic a tio n s and
m em orabilia at the museum. DeWulf and
Johnston spent the weekend roughing it in
the EAA bunkhouse. It was a fun time, and
they also had an invitation to Paul Pobrezny’s
home. Dee and Joanne came up fo r the day
and also enjoyed the activity.

Flight Safety Sem inar at Rosemont, Illinois.
Subjects included the biennial flight review
and stress management.
The year's activities were culm inated with a
December 2 Christm as dinner, followed by a
chapter meeting at which plans fo r 1985 were
discussed. Treasurer Dee Greisheimer made
all of the arrangements and was responsible
for the seasonal decorations.

November 13 to sell the special "O ld News­
boy Day” edition of the St. Louis GiobeDem ocrat newspaper. Those participating in­

percentage of our membership came to sup­
port the airport, promote Ninety-Nines and
seek new members.
Mearl Frame was hostess fo r our August
meeting in her gorgeous new home. Mearl
showed slides taken during her recent at­
tendance with Susan Philpot at the annual
Cardinal O wners’ Convention at Shangri-La
Resort in Oklahoma.

Susan Philpot took advantage of the op po r­
tun ity to fly-in to an active A ir Force base
during W right-Patterson's September 15 an­
nual open house for general aviation. A large
num ber of East Coast based F-15s were
parked on the Dayton, O hio ramp, sheltering
from a hurricane. Free bus transportation was
provided to and from the fabulous A ir Force
Museum.

Most of our members turned out as workers,

ing with the Michigan Chapter at the elegant
Vivian W aters and Jan Pocock hosted our
N ovem ber 20 m eeting at V ivian 's hom e.
Twenty members and four guests enjoyed

25,000 feet. Fourteen balloonists became
members of the 4-M ile-H igh-C lub last year at
Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
N ikki Caplan and Jane Buckles flew their
hydrogen balloon O ctober 13 in the G ordon
Bennett Balloon Race in Zurich, Switzerland.
Of 14 teams invited, they were one of three
American teams participating.
Although the weather in St. Louis felt like
spring was approaching, the spirit of C hrist­
mas was d e finite ly in the air when 31 mem­
bers and guests attended the December 18
Christm as dinner meeting. New members
Jan Eveans and Jeanne Vance were wel­
com ed, and an in te re stin g program was
presented by Claudine Johnson from M ighty
God M inistries, Inc. This non-profit, nondenom inational group of Christian women
dedicated to the preservation of the fam ily
provide a shelter, Jireh House, for families
involved w ith foster care. Each 99 gave a toy
fo r children under their care.
Adela S charr, life and ch a p te r cha rte r
member, gave the chapter a gift which was
outstanding. An aviation scholarship fund
was started with a gift of $5,000!

Indiana Chapter
November 18 was a day like all 99 meeting
days, o r so it seemed. Not only was flying out
of the question, but hazardous driving con­
ditions accounted fo r the absence of several
members from ou r meeting. Ironically, the
fo llow ing weekend was like a perfect spring
day. In spite of the weather, it was a good
turno ut fo r our pitch-in luncheon hosted by
Rae Cawdell. It was good to have prospective
members Ann Nobles and Dottie Hildebrand
w ith us. Dottie's soon-to-be 49'/2er is Dr.
W illia m H ilde bra nd, an FAA m edical ex­
aminer. When he bought her an Aeronca
Champ, she decided it was tim e to learn to fly.
During our afternoon gab test, Rae Cawdell
was asked to show the beautiful trophy she
received November 13 from the Indianapolis
Aero Club. A traveling trophy, it w ill be
passed on to another next year, but the lovely
plaque that accom panied it is fo r keeps.
For the past few years, the Ninety-Nines
and the Indianapolis Aero Club have enjoyed
the ir Christmas party together. This year was
no exception, but som ething different was
planned by com m ittee members June Nor­
man, Tannie Schlundt and Midge Moore.
December 11 we went to the Beef & Boards
Dinner Theatre, where our party of 100 (the
largest of the special groups in attendance
that evening) saw a New York production of
the play, "Annie."

apparent by the response we received that
there was a need to hold this program more

The chapter gave Carol a red, white and blue
w indsock as a housewarm ing gift, and she
presented the troph y the chapter won for
activities at the fall North Central Sectional.
We were glad to see Joy Black, our safety
chairm an, up and around after having an
em ergency abdom inal operation in October.
Joy gave us a "surprise" test on our aircraft
perform ance, and Charlene Falkenberg pre­
sented "IFR Charts and the VFR Pilot.”

Keeping w ith tradition, members brought the
hostess an airplane ornam ent to hang on her
tree. In addition to the custom ary gift ex­
change, members brought a gift for a resident
of a local convalescent home. We enjoyed an
evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, a potluck supper, games and, of course, hangar
stories.
Jane W ilson, due to her health, had to give
up her apartm ent and move to a nursing
home. Jane attended Purdue University dur­
ing the tim e Amelia Earhart was teaching
there, and she is a chapter charter member.

A very successful poker run was held in
O ctober, organized by Ardis Luthe and Ruth
P rescott. The A m es-low a Falls-W aterloo
route was flow n on a beautiful day, ending
with a sum ptuous potluck in Waterloo, which
was hosted by Karen Hanus and Verna Mae
Prochaska. The best four hands won aviation
Christmas tree ornaments.
The November “ You and Your Airplane"
m e e tin g was c a n c e le d due to h o rrib le
weather, but all the form s were completed
and mailed fo r our Jackie Kilburn, our AE
Scholarship candidate. We also telephoned
inform ation about Iowa hosting the North
C entral S ectio na l, organized by Barbara
Brotherton, in the fall of 1985.
O ur annual Christmas party was hosted by
M arcene G rant and Barbara Brotherton.
Although the weather was bad and the airport
closed, there was a large turnout, and the
Chinese g ift exchange was a humorous high
point of the evening. Entertainm ent was pro­
vided by Des Moines' Hoover High School
Chorus, which then serenaded the stranded
air travelers in the terminal.

O ur November meetings are special, and
this one was no exception. It has become

socializing, cocktails and dinner at a holiday
party in a V ictorian setting provided by a 19th
c e n tu ry m an sio n on St. P a u l’s h is to ric
Sum m it Avenue. The site was the AAUW
C lu b h o u s e , ju s t a few b lo c k s fro m the
governor's mansion. When three 99s from the
Duluth area decided that blow ing and drifting
snow made driving impossible, they, along
w ith the ir 49V!>ers, flew the Aztec way and
joined the party.

Members met at the home of Pat and Paul

Cleveland and flies out of Lorain County.
Members met recently with the “ W omen in
Travel" group for dinner and a program,
coordinated by Linda Dickerson, on women
in aviation. Doreen Susman gave a lively and
humorous talk on her ATP experiences, and
Hortense McGhee updated us on the Cleve­
land Flight Standards District Office.
Members are busy planning the next flig h t
com panion/pinch-hitter course, which will
be May 19-20 at Akron Muni.

flyin g im possible and driving hazardous, the
turno ut was gratifying, and the meeting fully

everyone already has more than enough to
do, and with December's weather in Michigan

meeting, w hich we w ill host. O ur generous

Thirteen 99s, 49'/2ers and guests flew or
drove to the Mankato A irp o rt fo r the Novem­
ber FBI hosted and catered by Marion Lutes.
Low c e ilin g s, icy runw ays and a broken
weather com puter at M inneapolis FSS com ­
bined to keep others ground-bound. Marion's
lunch was delicious, and those who made the
trip enjoyed meeting two prospective 99s
from southern Minnesota.

C h ap te r of the N a tion al O rgan iza tion of
Women (NOW).
Sixteen guests joined us at November's
annual m em bership/inform ational meeting.
Jim m ie O lson hosted the meeting with Lu
Purdy p ro vid in g “ s c ra tc h " pu m pkin pies
made from "real'' pum pkins, which de cor­
ated the chapter’s O ctober Casino Nite. Hope
Isaacson presented slides de scrib ing the
history of the Ninety-Nines and current chap­
ter activities, while a question and answer
session led by Joan Somm erfeld and Terry
Ludtke concluded the meeting. Five licensed
women pilots joined the chapter that evening,
and several others became 66s.

Santa came early to Marci Glaesmann,
stuffing her stocking with a C-172. Although
Marci operates a flig h t school and charter
service in A lbert Lea, it's still nice to have an

Three Rivers Chapter
O ctober 11 found 18 members and guests
meeting at Bowman Aviation, Smith Field, Ft.
Wayne. What a surprise during our meeting to
have Indiana G overnor Robert O rr drop in to

O ctober 20 was a very busy day as our
second annual Flying Com panion Seminar
was held under the direction of CFIs Judy
G raham and Sheila D ick. In a d d itio n to
answering questions from the attendees, Sue
Fox of Ft. Wayne FSS spoke about the duties
and how weather briefings are given. The day
ended w ith a ta lk -d o w n tape between a
con tro l tower and a non-pilot after the death
of the pilot.

O ur Novem ber meeting at the home of
Shirley Twigg found 11 members present on
a windy, rainy O regon day. Guests included
Janet Bell and Jan Mercer, who are student
pilots, as well as p ilot Raeann Lumen. Mary
W olgemuth reported on the Red Cross VolunTEAM program . O ur speaker was Shelly
Hartman, an air traffic con tro ller at Hillsboro,
Oregon tower. She is actively involved in
aviation education with the FAA. She speaks
to school children of all ages, letting them
know of the jobs available in aviation. She is

from Idaho Falls conducted a ground school
on mountain flying and then gave checkrides

dible and the knowledge gained keeps us
flying safely in the mountains.

Mount St. Helens Chapter
O ur chapter spent New Year’s Eve provid­
ing “ Care Cars” fo r those who could not drive
a fte r to o m uch p a rty in g . We had three
vehicles stationed at large restaurants and
bars and, from 2400 to 0300, we delivered 18
people safely home to spend New Year's Day
in the com fort of their homes instead of the
possibility of spending it in jail or the hospital.
It was quite an experience, and we were
surprised to find that all our riders were
courteous and well behaved. We all met at a
local restaurant fo r an 0330 breakfast.
Our December party was canceled due to
snow and ice conditions.

Eight members attended the November 17

The latest report on “ O peration Heartbeat"
is that Audrey Baird flew a two-year-old girl to
M inneapolis December 7, accompanied by
Beth Lucy and the girl's mother. She was
taken to the Shriners Hospital for hip surgery,
which she had needed since birth.

The fall meeting was held in conjunction
with our annual Mountain Flying C linic at the
Flying "B " Resort Ranch in the M iddle Fork of
the Salm on River of c e n tra l Idaho. The

The O ctober meeting was a first for the
m ajority of members. A fter figu rin g how to
lay it out, the taxiw ay painting had many
he lp ing hands. The usual m istakes were
made, and a member suggested black paint
to cover the worst. It worked well and, from
the air, pilots can't see the areas filled to hide
mistakes. A local reporter inspected the job
and took a ride in Jean Davis' plane to take
photos.
A fter all the hard work, a "pum pkin pot­
luck" was held. Vista Field FBO provided a
room for the brief meeting.
The chapter sponsored a November FAA
Safety Sem inar fo r pilots in the surrounding
area. The to p ic s covered in clu d e d local
accidents and why they occur. That enabled
"W in te r Flying Safety” was the theme for a
presentation by Tom Magussen in November.
These lo ng w in te r m onths can be spent
sharpening our minds on the many aspects of
flying we should know so well.
We have elected to plan ahead for monthly
activities. Each members is in charge of one
m onth, and we try to plan interesting aviation
related projects.

Women pilots have earned more attention
in recent years. One example is our own
Linda Mayfield. She earned her license a
couple of years ago and now flies hubby Gary
on occasional business trips. Business as­
sociates and other pilots usually are a bit
surprised when they learn that Linda is the
pilot. In addition, Laurie W oodard completed
her first BFR, and Laura Smith competed in
the Hayward-Las Vegas A ir Race, coming out
in the top third.

Aspen Chapter
We had our first air m arking last July. A few
Denver 99s flew in to assist, and we had a

Chapter Chairman Betty Pfister was re­
cently inducted in to the C olorado Aviation
Hall of Fame. We re all very proud of her
con tribu tions to air rescue as well as general
aviation.
We co-hosted a December 4 Christmas
party with the local EAA chapter, and we
invited all of the pilots in Aspen. We had a
great turnout, introducing a lot of new people
to the Ninety-Nines and EAA.

ou r first annual fly-in . A fter a week of rain in
unusually dry New Mexico, we were graced
with beautiful fall weather. The local EAA
chapter cooked breakfast fo r all who wanted
a good meal and, although attendance was
small, com petition was keen. Mary Sweetser
walked away w ith a fabulous win in the spot
landing event and was presented with two
tropies, one from o u r chapter and one from
Lela Carwardine. Lela had won her trophy in
1965 and wanted to present it to a 99 if a
member won first place.
The fo llo w in g Sunday, the El PasoChapter
again invited Chaparral 99s to their annual
fly-in brunch. Included in the activities was a
spot la nd ing co n te st upon arrival at the
M cQ uire Ranch in Fabins, Texas. The best
landing 99 was again Mary Sweetser.

Chapter happenings included a tour of El
Campo Metro A irp ort by the local kinder­
garten class. The tou r was conducted by
Speck Morgan, Vel's 49'/2er. The Morgans
also represented the c h a p te r at the fall
section meeting in Tulsa, accepted the sec­
tion 66 Award fo r Coastal Bend.

Major General Charles Bond, author of A
Flying Tiger's Diary, was our guest speaker
November 19 at Ragsdale Aviation, Mueller
Airport. He enthralled 23 listeners w ith his
experiences as an original Flying Tiger and
the one responsible for the tiger's m outh on
the nose of the airplane they flew in WWII.
Guests included local QBs and a few gals
from the Heart of Texas Chapter.
O ur December 8 Christmas party was held
at Barbara Gard's home, and she announced
that she's moving to Massachusetts in early
January.
Member Judy Carpenter was married De­
cem ber 22, and ou r January m eeting in ­
cluded a baby shower for new m other Teri
Gooch as well as a planning session fo r our
anniversary meeting in February.

State College and a CFII flig h t in stru cto r with
nearly 1,000 hours, is curre ntly providing
excellent safety tips as the chapter safety
chairman.
A nother successful session of the Flight
W ithout Fear C linic has been com pleted. The
November 17 graduation flight, Denver to
Albuquerque, became a real test for parti­
cipants. Before reaching cruising altitude,
the 727 captain leveled off and advised his
passengers th a t the y w ere re tu rn in g to
Denver because of hydraulic problems. W hile
naturally apprehensive, the graduates came
through with flyin g colors as a result of the
clinic.
A fter the problem was corrected, the trip
resumed, but not w ithout another test. During
the flig h t, a graduate and s ta ff m em ber
m oved to the sm oking sectio n. A n o th e r
passenger had dropped some ash on a seat
cushion. The resultant smell alarmed the
graduate, but q u ick a ctio n by the flig h t
attendant and the attitude of the staff calmed
the passengers.
Because o f th e en ro u te delay, V ice Chairman Diana W illiam s was called upon to
make alternate luncheon arrangements. She

cou ntry w ith Annie M iller, the alligator lady.
U nfortunately it was too cold for the alligators
to come out and respond to Annie, but the
scenery was beautiful.
The November chapter meeting was held at
Kathy Long’s home. Tina Steen, a newly
licensed 16-year-old, was a guest. Margie
T aylo r related the astonishing saga of the
theft of the ir Bellanca from Addison Airport.
(It is still missing.) Changes in the Inter­
national Bylaws and postponem ent of the
Education Congress in India were discussed.
Like m igratory birds, most members, in­

C olorado, gathered fo r the December meet­
ing, their special annual Tex-Mex party at
Fran S helton’s lovely home, com plete with an

Looking back at the fall season, members
enjoyed many activities together with the
scheduled new events ahead.
In O ctober, our gals met at Meacham Field
to hear FAA's Don Muzeroll speak about the
W ings Proficiency Program, plus a couple of
excellent film s. Members and participants
enjoyed an early m orning November 3 air
m arking of Ennis A irport. Town and airport
officia ls provided a lovely lunch. Also during
O ctober and November, Jeri Gault, chapter
reporter, taught night classes in basic ground
school at Grapevine High School.
Carole W heeler was inducted as section
governor at the fall meeting. Several chapter
members attended when Carole received a
dozen red roses.

in to the O klahom a A ir and Space Museum’s
Aviation Hall of Fame November 11.

In November, a program planned by the
Austin Chapter was attended by Chairman
Beverly G ibson and Derra Raymor. Retired
General Charlie Bond spoke on “ The Forma­
tion and Career of the Flying Tigers" at
Ragsdale East. The December meeting was
held at Beverly's home in Lago Vista.

returned from a trip to San Francisco, and
they are excited about their new barge-type
d rillin g down to 18,000 feet off the Louisiana
coast. We hope it's a gusher!
Derra Raym or is flying every weekend and
recently took her brother, a fearless Green
Beret, on a flight, while Virginia Mattiza just
returned from spending November in her
home state of Oregon. Imogene Cham berlain
stays busy teaching aviation courses at Texas
A&M University and was a nominee fo r the
national Flight Instructor of the Year award.
The chapter still has a few of the excellent
handbooks, "Survival fo r Pilots and Passen­
gers," for sale ($6.50 by mail). We encourage
all pilots to have a copy in their airplane.

Houston Chapter
O ur annual C h ristm as bazaar, held in
October, was such a huge success that we
held three parties this year to accommodate
everyone O ver $500 was raised fo r our
treasury.

A 20-m inute video was shown in order to best
explain the recent changes in FSS all over the
country. W eather briefings were the main
topic of conversation as our Houston weather
really gives us a run for our money. Refresher

Saleh and Rex Boyle. The reception from the
town's people was great, including treating
us to lunch on an unusually nice November
day that was just perfect fo r a last-m inute air
marking.
Janet and Don Yoder gave us all a very
m erry welcom e in to the ir home December 8
fo ro u ra n n u a l Christm as meeting dinner. The
well attended party featured a covered dish
dinn er that was certainly a big hit. We were
very pleased to have several 66s and other
guests in attendance.
We decided to spread the holiday cheer by
baking and decorating 20 dozen "airplane”
cookies and delivering them to the local
G ADO o ffice , FSS and to w e r personnel.

Pat and Frank Mlady returned November 9
from a five-week trip to the Orient. Pat com­
mented that they unexpectedly ran into Kay
Brick and Marian Banks when they arrived in
Beijing and again in Xian.

Over 40 members and guests gathered at
the O klahom a A ir and Space Museum No­
vember 4 fo r our regular chapter meeting. We
were warm ly welcomed by Clarence Page,
executive director. Following lunch, Captains
T erri A rm b ru ste r and Asima Syed, pilots
stationed at T inke r AFB, were our guest
speakers. Their inform ative and interesting
slide and movie presentation described the
E-3A Sentry aircraft they pilot. We all have a
better understanding of, not only the plane,
but the capabilities of the 552nd Airborne
W arning and Control System (AWACS).

After 18 m onths of cancellations due to bad
weather, we fin a lly marked the airport at
Seward. A picture and short article on our
achievement even made the local newspaper.
Two of our members were lucky enough to
attend the fall section meeting in Tulsa, and
are proud to welcome two new 66s — Mary
M cG ilve ry and C andace H all. T hey are
enthusiastic about obtaining their licenses
and becoming full-fledged 99s Jane Burch is
another new 99 member.
We took part in the River C ity Round-Up
festivities by helping with the fly-in breakfast,
sponsored by the Shriners' Flying Fez group
September 29 at M illard Airport. All proceeds
went to the Shrine Burn Center.
O ur December 4 Christmas party was a
great way to wind up our year. We enjoyed a
d e licio u s meal and in te re stin g slid e s of
Rosemary Block's flying trip to Alaska for
Convention and hunting. Barb Herd, who
also attended the Convention, added her
experiences to the presentation.

San Antonio Chapter
O ur chapter had a lovely Christm as party at
the home of Ann and B ill Ash. The weather
was perfect at 74 degrees in the afternoon
and about 60 degrees in the evening.
But wait a few minutes and the weather in
Texas w ill change. Yesterday San Antonio
had its first snow in 10 years. Unannounced, it
stopped traffic and schools. Today the sun is
out and 50 degrees.
The best news fo r us is that Enid Kasper
received a scholarship from the W hirly-G irls.

Shreveport Chapter
O ur chapter is very proud of the fact that,
not only do ou r members prom ote aviation,
but we also take an active part in com m unity
activities. Karen Logan has played a vital role
in establishing McDade House, which will
serve as a home away from home for out-oftown relatives and families of patients in
intensive care in local hospitals. Up to now,
only a hospital waiting room was available to
those who could not afford a motel room.
Now, due the efforts of Karen's group, a bed,
bath and lounge facilities are w ithin walking
distance.
Dot and Floyd Lindsey have returned from
the annual AOPA Plantation Party in Nash­
ville, and both report an enjoyable and stim u­
lating three-day visit with enthusiastic pilots.
Joan Price has done it again! Earlier she
astounded us by m aking parachute jumps,
and now she reports taking a hot air balloon
ride in Albuquerque. Her description of the
jaunt — no seat belt! — held us spellbound
Renee Sharp has left her copilot's seat with
Royale Airlines fo r tw o weeks to take a well
deserved vacation in Ireland.
One of our busiest members is Dr. Jean
Mason, who stays at Riverside Hospital most
of her waking hours. To get away from it all
this summer, Jean bought a midget m otor­
cycle, stowed it in the baggage com partm ent
of her Skylane, and took off for a solo tou r of
the Midwest. She visited all of the states she
had always wanted to see w ithout having any
deadlines or com m itm ents and, according to
her glow ing report, that is the way to take a
vacation.
Eileen Anderson is putting her ground
instructor's rating to good use. She jo u r­
neyed to Minden, Louisiana November 18
and taught a day-long session on meteor­
ology and navigation to the CAP cadets in the
Minden Squadron.
We were happy to welcome three new
members to our November meeting, which
was held in ou r newly redecorated trailer —
Hangar 99. O ur membership has grown from
a nucleus of five to 38!

We also sponsored a fund-raising booth at
the EAA fly-in , September 14-16 in Kerrville,
Texas. The chapter accepted $1 donations
for a chance to win a styrofoam airplane
wrapped with $99. The drawing fo r the lucky
winner was held at the EAA banquet. Money
raised from the event was placed in a local
scholarship fund for a deserving lady to
prom ote her aviation career. (The styrofoam
airplane really did fly!)

activities, a film about the Confederate Air
Force was presented.

Miami Dade C om m unity College (South)
won th ird place in the November 17 NIFA

tition. Fran Sargent, advisor for Miami Dade,
and Ursula Davidson, chairman of Broward
C om m unity College's Aviation Department,
attended the meet, as did Felicia West, Helen
Mennitto, Barb Chapman and Ruth Fleisher.
W inner of the chapter's Martha and Les
G riner Scholarship Award was announced at
the Christm as luncheon at the O fficer's Club,
Homestead AFB. W inner Barbara Selwitz,
Spaceport Chapter, and husband Jack flew in
so she could accept the award in person. She
w ill use the scholarship to obtain her com­
mercial rating.

Florida Suncoast Chapter
Twenty-six members gathered at the St.
Petersburg-Clearwater A irport in November
for a tour of the FSS. We were briefed on all
operations, including preflight and weather,
filing a flig h t plan and explanation of the
various equipment. We then toured the tower,
where we watched the smooth flow of air
traffic, including general aviation, airliners
and Coast Guard C-130s.
Skip Fernandez hosted a fabulous C hrist­
mas party at her Tampa home. The bountiful
buffet was devoured by 38 happy, hungry
members and friends. Dottie Birdsong won
the award fo r "the most effort to attend,"
having attended the Flying Farmers' C hrist­
mas party in Leesburg the same day.

the AOPA Convention, w hile G u di Lashbrook
is now busy tow ing gliders in Crystal River.
Mary Fletcher is w orking on the sixth annual
World Precision Flying Cham pionships to be

November 3 luncheon meeting at the newly
opened Sheraton Hotel in Natchez. Members

the chapter sponsored a local USPFT com pe­
tition. A com plim entary continental breakfast

lunch, the com petition concluded w ith a spot
landing contest. In firs t place was Hank
Lewis, a Pascagoula pilot. Carolyn Goings,

A lavish luau was enjoyed by 25 members

Forood, a transferred member from Florida.
Seven members flew to the "Pasta Party"
given by Cameron Park fo r their fifth anni­

flyin g due to marginal weather.

rides — what a th rill! Later in the day, we held
flo u r bom bing and spot landing contests.
The past few m onths have certainly been
busy fo r this chapter.
We sponsored a June 9 poker run with
term in us at Lovell Field in C hattanooga,
where the Krystal FBO was kind enough to let
us have some space fo r ou r group. The
com mittee, chaired by Nell Weathers, in­
c lu d e d M artha C lin to n , Irene Flew ellen,
Rachel Pruett and Anita Sasser, who pro­
vided barbecue, chips and soft drinks for sale.
O thers who helped included Lola Culberson,
M arilyn Ayers, Nancy Daily, Lisa Bates and
Ingrid Ramsey. W inner of the poker run was
Jerry Phifer of Dalton, Georgia. Jerry gra­
cio usly returned the $99 first prize money to
our chapter to be used fo r ou r scholarship
fund, which w ill be donated to a Tennessee
college student actively involved in aviation.
August saw a num ber of ou r members
headed fo r the Alaska Convention. Marilyn
A ye rs and 49'4>er Joe l, as w ell as Ruth
Thomas and 49'/2er Ferris and Irene Flew­
ellen, flew their own planes fo r experiences
that we are certain w on't soon be forgotten.
Evelyn Lyons also attended.
We sponsored an “ honor system" p ro fi­
ciency run in Septem ber to Chattanooga's
Dallas Bay Airport. Each contestant planned
her flig h t, including tim e en route. W inner of
the event was Ruth Thomas.
Chartered in March 1984, we are comprised
of six 99s and five 66s From the start, we have
encouraged the 66s to participate fu lly in
chapter activities.
We conducted a Right Seat Safety Seminar
in November. We are in a somewhat isolated
area and were happy to have 10 participants
fo r our first seminar Mary Ann Penson, who
chaired the event, enlisted the help of all our
99s and three 66s as instructors. We chose
the day-long form at with breaks fo r lunch and
dinner. Because of the small group, we were
able to know our participants on a more
personal level. Much as we tried to solicit
constructive criticism , all we garnered was
praise. Participants could not believe this was
our first effort after being organized only nine
months.
It should be noted that only Kathy W alton
Students plan their c ro s s-cou n try trip at the end ot Clear
Lake C hapter's Right Seat P roficiency Seminar
and Mary Ann Penson were form er 99s. The
other five members knew nothing about 99s
until late last year. Hats off to 99 member
instructors La Daun Ingle, Rose Le Clerc,
Kathryn Reisland and Peggy Boynton. And
d on’t forget to involve your 66s. For our
seminar, we used the help of Marie Hummel
(medical facts), Connie Knoke (instrum ents)
and Helen Diehl (weather).
All of our members now have a sense of
purpose ab ou t our org an izatio n and our
chapter. We would highly recommend that
cha pters u tiliz e th e ir 66s. W hether yo u r
chapter is large or small, take a positive
attitude and get involved. You’ll be glad you
did. We sure are!

El Cajon Valley Chapter
Vi Chambers, Dottie Sanders and Dottie
Campbell represented the 99s O ctober 25 at
the East County Chamber of Commerce "Ice
Breaker" at Gillespie Field. Its objective was
to present our airport to the com m unities and
businesses of the area.
Doris Ritchey was one of 500 invited guests
to attend the launch of a new NOAA weather
satellite from Vandenberg Launch Site. Rain
and gusting winds caused cancellation of the
launch, but Doris was pleased to have the
chance to see the new launch site and hear
the program they presented.
November 3 was the first air m arking fo r the
year. Members Frankie Clemens, Eleanor
Richardson and Marian DeLano drove to
B o rre g o to re-w hitew ash the ro cks and
segmented circle. We were met by members
of the new Borrego Springs Chapter. South­
west Section Governor Pat Forbes was there
to present the new cha pter's charter. Vi
Chambers and Lynn C oulthard represented
our chapter at Borrego’s installation, and
Lynn was very im portant to our air marking.
When the rope broke while we were changing
the windsock, it was Lynn’s jo b to sit on the
bottom end so it w o u ld n ’t flop up and break
the light on the top end.

totally surprised and, in her words, “ I feel
deeply honored and touched."

Our chapter’s annual fund-raiser, selling
hot dogs, beer and soft drinks at the TruckeeTahoe Air Show, was a success. The money
we earned w ill enable us to again award a
flyin g scholarship and increase our dona­
tions to other scholarship funds. During the
awards ceremony, the 1984 winner of our
scholarship was announced. Carin Cooper of
Reno, Nevada w ill use her award to earn her
com m ercial rating. Also awarded was the
Greg G ojkovich Memorial Seaplane Scholar­
ship. This scholarship is sponsored by Cindy
S eym our G o jko vich and adm inistered in
con ju nction w ith our scholarship. The 1984
w in n e r of the M em orial S cholarship was
Sandra M cG innis of Placerville, California.
To get us motivated again after the lull
fo llow ing the air show, Chairman Barbara
N o rthrop invited members and 66s to her
home fo r dinner. After a delicious dinner and
much chit-chat, everyone recounted how,
when and where they started flying. For such
a small chapter, we represent many flying
hours and varied experiences.
O ur m other-daughter members were for­
tun ate to be to g e th e r fo r the Christm as
holidays. Barbara N o rthrop’s daughter, Kim,
a third-class cadet at the A ir Force Academy,
was home. B onnie S eym our's daughters,
Linda, a hostess for Continental Airlines, and
Cindy, a hostess for Western Airlines, were
both home, as well as daughter Loretta, a
p ilot fo r Resort Airlines. Having our daugh­
ters home had to be the highlight of the
holidays for all of us.
Most of our members were present at our
Christm as party, and we had a wonderful
evening. We were unable to have our awards
banquet in October, so honors were pre­
sented at this party. Kim Necessary won the
Service Award, and B rigitte De Saint-Phalle
was named Woman Pilot of the Year.

Eldris Shogren recently donated her 99th
pint of blood at the Peninsula M emorial Blood
Bank in Burlingame, California.
She gave her first pint to the Red Cross
during W orld War II. When she found out how
easy it was fo r her, she continued to donate
more o r less regularly. The only interruptions
since have been for medical reasons.
“ Everyone cannot donate blood," she says,
"b u t I believe that everyone who can should
become a regular donor. It takes so little of
your tim e and is needed so desperately."
Congratulations, Eldris, on your 99th visit!
Sounds like som ething other 99s could and
should do. You can’t fly in an unpressurized
plane fo r 72 hours after you donate, but with
proper scheduling, that should be no prob­
lem. How about it, 99s?

Jane and Link Vaughn spent several weeks
in San Felipe. Jane reports she still has to
learn to sail into the wind, but they caught lots
of fish and did some surf sailing.
Mary Haizlip was invited to speak at the
Oklahom a A ir and Space Museum. Unfor­
tunately, she had to decline due to a broken
foot. Mary was the mistress of ceremonies at
the M alibu Board of R ealtors Christm as
party. To her surprise, she was named Realtor
of the Year. The theme was "Touch of Class,"
which is quite appropriate to honor Mary.
Rachel Bonzon and Dorothy Limbach met
form er member Mary Dorr at the Westwood
M ethodist C hurch. M ary has a television
interview show on religion. Her last book
about her flyin g experiences, Family up in the
A ir, was purchased by Rachel, who w ill
donate it to the chapter library after she has
read it.

Furnace Creek Ranch is a prime fly-in
resort to which 14 of us flew fo r an overnight

is 211 feet below sea level. As the valley is for
the most part unpopulated, it's interesting to
fly below sea level, observing the strange

our regular Novem ber meeting. However, we
did not miss the o p p o rtu n ity to get together
afterw ard at M c C o rm ic k ’s Landing, John
Wayne A irport, fo r dinner. Special thanks go
to Barbara Ward fo r a super jo b of organizing
this event. She had a reservation system in
effect, team ing instructors w ith members so
that no tim e was wasted doing our favorite
thing — flying.
The fly-in for December was to Calexico for
lunch. O ur chapter generally holds a fly-in
each m onth on the third Saturday, when we
invite members of other chapters to join us.

Shark Island Yacht Club hosted our festive
Christm as party. We watched the Newport
Harbor boat parade of lights, follow ed by a
fantastic feast and dancing after dinner.
One of ou r chapter personalities, Lois Cura
Dillman, and her fam ily participated in the
"Fam ily Feud" television show. The showing
aired twice, once in September and again in
December, and they won!

New rating from Piper, and Shilling instructs,

We held the spring section o f the great Southwest
which naturally we thought was the biggest and best.
Summer was trips for many o f our gals,
Degraff, Smith, Hart, fly with fam ily or pals.
Sweeney and Becker flew up to Alaska
and shared stories and pictures, "It ain't flat like Nebraska!"

Rio Bravo was home fo r the section in fall,

W hirly-G irl Roseanna Ballard rates as an
achiever. She was awarded the 1984 Dr.
D orothy J. Flint Memorial Scholarship last
January fo r advanced helicopter training. In
spite of three surgeries and a bout with Valley
Fever during the year, she com pleted both
com m ercial and CFI ratings fo r helicopters.
She is married, has two young daughters and
worked fu ll-tim e w hile earning her ratings.
Roseanna has already been rewarded for her
efforts w ith a job at Arizona W ing and Rotor
where she took her training.
The 66 program has turned out two more
99s. Janet Reid and Barbara Spears have
graduated in to fu ll cha pter m em bership.

Flying Com panion Seminars in November

husband of a 99 were among the 54 clients
who participated. One woman client is now
ta kin g flig h t lessons (a prospective 99!).
Stacy Hamm and Ruth Olson co-chaired the
seminars.
One fun Saturday in November, Sharon
W eber put to g e th e r an APT day. Some
members provided airplanes, CFI members
donated their services, and seven 99s became
APT. Later in the day, Shirley Rogers and Ann
Newcombe hosted a “ Sneaker Day" outing,
also at Deer Valley Airport. Guests brought
their own "hobo stew” ingredients plus a pair
of sneakers. Je rrie Cobb, then, was the
recipient of 26 pairs of sneakers for her
beloved Amazonas people.
Several members placed a marble marker
in front of Sky Harbor A irp o rt’s Executive
Term inal to commemorate the 1973 planting
of a tree from the Forest of Friendship. Sad to
say, the 1983 Forest of Friendship seedling
planted at the Arizona State Capitol Building,
was tram pled by construction workers. Now
we have a marker, but no tree until a new
seedling can be obtained from the Forest of
Friendship.
Jim m ie Hall hosted the 1984 Christmas
party in her secluded desert hideaway in the
heart of the m etropolitan area. Sharon Weber
som ething new on display — a bouncing
baby boy named David Troy, who made his
debut August 17,1984.

Lieutenant Cheryl Martin, USN, stationed
at the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron at
North Island Naval A ir Station, was our guest
speaker at O ctober's meeting. She explained
the tough requirem ents fo r acceptance into
the N avy’s p ilo t tra in in g program , w hich
includes heavy emphasis in math and sci­
ence, as well as m aintaining top grades.
M artin curre ntly flies the C-1, a “ Carrier
O nb o a rd D e liv e ry " a irc ra ft (pa ssen gers/
cargo) powered by two 1,450-hp reciprocat­
ing engines. She has an enviable record of 98
carrier landings, and her presentation in­
cluded an explanation of some of the in­
tricacies of this hazardous maneuver.

to fin d G e rtru d e L o c k w o o d 's ho m e in
December fo r the annual Christmas party.
G ertrude's grandson, Gregg, was on hand to
help make this an enjoyable evening fo r the
many 99s and 49%ers who attended.

San Gabriel Valley Chapter
Thirteen chapter members flew down to
Rio Bravo Resort in Sef>tember to attend a
delightful fall section meeting, hosted by the
B akersfield C hapter. A h ig h lig h t fo r the
group was the installation of our own Shirley
W inn as vice-governor and Lois Erickson as
treasurer.
The follow ing weekend, 99s and 49V4ers
from Santa Clara Valley Chapter joined us for
our Sunday m orning fly-in brunch to the Yolo
Fliers Club. That week also saw final prepara­
tions by Chairman Bobbi Campbell fo r our
role as term inus chapter for the O ctober 13
Pacific A ir Race. A great group of pilots
participated in this annual event, including
Sacram ento Valley s Barbara S estito and
Thelm a Cull, winning the third leg prize in
B arb's C om anche. Jea ne tte F ow ler and
Shirley W inn placed sixth overall in Jean­
ette's A-36. The day was clim axed with an
evening of g o o d fe llo w s h ip at the race
banquet at the Sacramento Inn.
O ctober 27 was the date fo r local USPFT
com petition at Lincoln A irport. Six area pilots
competed in navigation and spot landing
contests, with the top two pilots being eligible
to co m p e te in the re g io n a l m eet. P atti
Trussler and her com m ittee had the events
s m o o th ly planned, and the w eather was
mostly ideal, despite some smoke in the area
that caused the field to go nearly IFR just in
time for the landing com petition.
Margaret Lawson and husband David have
been sharing w ith other envious pilots their
fabulous pictures and slides from their recent
flig h t to Europe. The 14,000-mile flig h t in
their Mooney Executive included stops in
Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Germany
before the tw o pilots headed back to good ole
El Monte Airport.
A showcase box w ill soon occupy the
Brackett A irp ort Term inal waiting room in an
e ffo rt by o ld m em bers to gene rate new
member interest. The case w ill be used to
display The 99 NEWS as well as achieve­
m ents th ro u g h N in e ty-N in e h isto ry. Bob
Sandhagen has offered to build the box, and
S hirley E ckloff was kind enough to donate
the glass.

Realizing that the elevation num bers of Brackett Airport
included a "9 9 ." Traude Gom ez and a tellow Fullerton
99 pose with the appropriate numbers.
Despite wet and blustery weather, we did a
lot of flying in November. The first weekend,
our poker flig h t attracted almost 70 "players."
W inners received generous cash prizes, and
we still had enough for a sizeable contribu­
tion to the chapter's scholarship fund. Lois
Letzring was chairman.
The next day, 44 people in 20 aircraft visited
Travis AFB. We met at Nut Tree where the
tour's organizer, Peggy Ewert, briefed us on
procedures. Then, we descended on Travis,
where we spent an exciting day learning
about this im portant logistics wing of the Air
Force. Captain Surratt, a flig ht instructor as
well as a C-141 pilot, gave us a briefing and
showed a film of M ilitary A irlift Command
(MAC), including its work during the Berlin
A irlift and in returning POWs from Vietnam.
We walked through the huge, low-bellied 141
(known as the "Green Lizard") and the even
larger C-5, which is able to carry two tanks
and was once called to help the Navy with
delivery of a 19,000-pound propeller for a
disabled aircraft carrier.
We learned that there is one female pilot for
a C-5, and five or six women flying the 141s.
H ighlig ht of the Travis visit was our chance to
"fly ” a C-5 sim ulator. Since Travis runs the
sim ulator training weekends as well, we were
grateful that they shut down long enough to
allow each of us an unforgettable hands-on
experience.
We made another DRI flig h t November 18
to Santa Barbara. Again, Chairman Barbara
Murren took part. Others were her 49'^er,
John, Stella and Ray Leis, Debby and Bob
M orton, Carole Lushbaugh, Kathleen Burns
and Mayetta Behringer.

Maggie and Tom Bird recently returned
from a trip to England, Sw itzerland and
Rome. They shared photos taken on the
Concorde flig h t to Heathrow. She said, for a
six-hour dissertation on the Concorde, "just
push my button!"
Sue Cedarquist-Yom am oto was bombard­
ed w ith questions about her job on Imperial
Airlines. Sue was chapter chairman a couple
of years ago, and loves flying with the airline.
Melody Rich told us all about the Southwest
Sectional at Bakersfield and what we missed
by not going! Ruth Buirge, chapter activities
chairman, showed us several beautiful pho­
to g ra p h s taken at the B allo on Fiesta at
Albuquerque.
