ISSUE 277 CELEBRATION TIMES P A G E !3 Forty Days to Ascension Fifty Days to Pentecost The resurrection of Jesus is the central event in the Christian calendar. It is at Easter that we mark the death of Jesus on the cross and celebrate his resurrection from the grave. In keeping with the importance of these events that we take the 40 days of Lent to prepare for Easter. Then after Jesus’ resurrection we read in the Bible that he appeared to his followers for 40 days. At the end of these 40 days there is his ascension to heaven (which is called Ascension Day). It was 10 days later (50 days after Easter) as the disciples were gathered together in prayer that the Holy Spirit is poured out on everyone in the room. This happened on the Day of Pentecost. Therefore, in the days following Easter we read about Jesus’ resurrection appearances for 40 days and we also look forward to a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit as we too celebrate Pentecost, which comes 50 days after Easter. ** This year Ascension Day is Thursday May 5th. Pentecost is Sunday May 15th. “Serve 301” – A new format -- new dates -Now on Thursday evenings. Please note the change of dates: while it had been offered as a one day seminar, Serve 301 will now be offered on three consecutive Thursday evenings: Celebration Church has three training sessions for its members: Begin 101, Grow 201 and Serve 301. Serve 301 will help you to discover how the Lord has blessed you through the work of the Holy Spirit to serve the mission of the church. To this end, each baptized Christian has been given spiritual gifts. Do you know your gifts? As Paul said, “Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.” (1 Cor 12:1) This small group is aimed at helping you discover your spiritual gifts. This course has been given as a Saturday workshop in the past. To better fit the schedules of members, it is changing to become a small group meeting weekly for a period of three consecutive Thursday evenings. The first of these sessions will be held on Thursday May 5th, 12th and 19th. The sessions will start approximately 7:15 and end at 9:30 on each of the evenings. These will be held in the home of Cam and Jane McKenzie at 6 Toronto St. Please contact either Cam or Jane at 705-719-2376 to confirm. Mid- Week Traditional Communion Service Once a month on a Tuesday at noon we have a Traditional Communion Service. It is held after Intercession and before the Woman’s Study. The monthly dates for this Tuesday noon hour Service will be: April 26th, May 31st and June 21st. New Photo Directory Hello Everyone! Bishop Charlie Masters led the devotions verse by verse through 2 Timothy. While it feels strange at first to be with other people, but to be silent, it proved to be an enriching experience. It allows time for reflection and listening. It was held at a unique location called the “Valley of the Mother of God’ which is a Coptic (Egyptian) retreat house located in the rolling hills east of Orangeville.
