Killaloe Community Games 2014 Newsletter Achievements 2014 Badminton National Bronze,Culture Corner National 4th, Swimming County Silver, 2 Bronze and Certificate, Badminton Munster Gold, Draughts County Bronze, Art 2 County Silver, Rugby Boys County Bronze, Soccer Boys County Bronze, Soccer Girls County Bronze, Tennis County Silver, Spikeball Boys County Gold, Athletics County Silver, Bronze and certificates The HSE Community Games is an independent voluntary organisation, operating in local communities throughout Ireland. The organisation aims to provide opportunities for children and young people aged 6-16 years to develop active healthy lives in a safe environment through experiencing a wide range of sporting and cultural activities. Community spirit and co-operation is fostered and encouraged. In October 2014, Killaloe Community Games committee organised a meeting to promote the wide range of activities offered by Community Games. Mary Loughnane, Tom Loughnane and Kieran Harvey of Munstergroup Clare Community Games attended to provide details of the events and activities. Following this meeting, the committee put a plan in place and targeted activities where they would be something for every child 2014 is Killaloe’s second year competing in Community Games and it proved to be a very rewarding experience. The number of participants increased, the range of activities that children took part increased, 2 teams qualified for national finals. Killaloe boy’s school who are involved in the Active Schools programme provided great support in fielding teams and encouraging children to participate in Community Games. A number of coaches from Ballina, Bridgetown and Ogonelloe helped out voluntarily which added greatly to the success and spirit of community games. Indoor Soccer Boys The first event of the year was U13 boys’ indoor soccer event in Ennis. It gave the boys a great opportunity to get indoor match experience. The team Jamie Butler, Nathan Kenny, Keith O’Donnell, Patrick Lucas, Adam Stuart, Dean Lawlor-Joyce, Oisin Monaghan and Stephen Geraghty. Whilst they didn’t progress on the day to the county final it was a very valuable learning experience and the boys had a great day. Many thanks to Eugene Quinn (Bridgetown) for his time and commitment to the team. narrowly beaten by Ennis in the semi final in extra time. The boys beat Kilrush in the playoff for Bronze. The team members were Oisin Minogue, Tony Foley, Luke Dillon, Diarmuid Coleman, Cormac Byrne, Tom Wood, Adam Nolan, Julienne Heaney, Brandon Hannon and Tom Seymour. Killaloe Community Games would like to thank Rob Mullane (Ballina) and Ray Hickey (Ogonnello) for their time in training and supporting the teams. Indoor Soccer Girls It was great to have a Killaloe Community Games girls’ team participating in the 5 aside U10 indoor soccer county competition. The team really well on their first day playing together, winning silver medals. The girls team members were Karen O'Mahony, Lauren Arthur, Rebecca Rodgers, Emily Byrne and Julia Elliot, Killaloe Community Games would like to thank Brian O'Donnell (Ballina) for his time in training and supporting the team. Killaloe Community Games entered 2 boys U10 teams in the 5 aside soccer competition. A very exciting day was had in Ennis watching the boys win their first two matches but were Page - 1 - Draughts Draughts was a first time event for Killaloe and was well worth the experience. An U12 and U14 mixed draughts teams travelled to Tulla to the county Draughts competition in Tulla on Saturday March 1st. The U12 team (Shane Geraghty, Stephen Geraghy, Jennifer Daly, Joe McGrath and Jack Flanagan) played brilliantly and were just beaten by Bridgetown. Well done to the U14 team (Adam Geraghty,Rachael Daly,Tony Seymour,Linda Daly and Eoin Geraghty) who played brilliantly and defeated Inch to win a bronze medal. Many thanks to Lorraine Geraghty for her time and commitment to the teams. Badminton The Killaloe u15 badminton girl’s team competed in the county final against Bridgetown. After a thrilling game they defeated Bridgetown qualifying for the Munster competition. The county team included Rachel Daly, Susan Daly, Linda Daly, Aoife Power, Anna Ryan and Rosaleen Ryan U10 Relay Cross Country Relay Two teams competed in the County Cross Country U10 Relay in Lees Road in Ennis on a glorious March morning. Both teams ran very well against some very strong opposition. Girls Team: Emily Byrne, Boys A: Gordy Wood, Jack Flanagan, Stephen Geraghty, Shane Geraghty. Boys: Diarmuid Coleman, Tony Foley, Cian O’Donnell, Tom Wood Talent Well done to Angela Seymour and Adam Geraghty who participated in the County Community Games Solo Singing and Eibhlis Coleman in the Solo Recitation in Sixmilebridge. All performed really well and did Killaloe proud. Rugby Killaloe has never entered a team into the community games rugby before so it was very exciting to be able to field a team, albeit a very young one. Only one of the boys currently plays U11 rugby, the rest play U10 & U9. Round 1: Killaloe v Ennis St Johns – won 5 tries to 2 with 3 scores from Ciaran, and a try apiece for Gordy and Stephen. Semi final: Doora Barefield A v Killaloe – Doora Barefield were very strong and scored 4 tries in the first five minutes. (They were the overall winners on the day). The Killaloe boys never let their heads go down and battled hard for the rest of the game only conceding one more try before the final whistle blew. 3rd/4th playoff: Killaloe v Doora Barefield B – the team was determined to come away with a medal and they did! They tackled as if their lives depended on it and played some great rugby. Try scorers were Ciaran Rodgers (3), Gordon Wood (2), Shane Geraghty (1), Stephen Geraghty (1). The girls U15 had thrilling games at the Munster Final in UL beating Kerry in the Final. The Munster Team members: Aoife Daly, Anna Ryan, Rosaleen Ryan and Emma Foley. Following on from the Munsters the team travelled to Athlone to compete in the National Community Games finals. The girls were narrowly beaten in the semifinal against Leinster. The girls earned a well deserved bronze national medal. Team: Stephen Geraghty, Shane Geraghty, Liam Daly, Gordon Wood, Kieran Rodgers, Laurent Chateau, Alexander Chateau, Aidan Foley, Tony Foley and Diarmuid Coleman. Many thanks to John Daly for coaching the team and his continued support and enthusiasm for promoting Community games in Killaloe. Page 2 Culture Corner The culture corner team led by Sarah Devane and inspired by Brian boru 1000th anniversary created a production of the Kincora call. The performance was initiated by an intense and powerful narration from Laura Bracken. The narration set the context of the Brian Boru era. The narration was continued by Jennifer Daly which led the highlight of the performance the Kincora Call. The team gave an amazing performance and earned the 4th medal prize. Following the national finals the team performed at the Cliffs of Moher for National Heritage week and have been nominated for a Clare All star. Many thanks to Sarah Devane for a beautifully written script and her many days of work preparing the team for the Nationals. Many thanks to the teachers of Killaloe Girls and Boys schools for promoting this event and to Eva Scanlan for coordinating the event. Art The art competition was very popular. The following children won the Killaloe Local competition and will represent Killaloe in the county competition. U8 Boys - Conor McClusker & Michael Adino U10 Girls - Emily Byrne & Karen O'Mahony U10 Boys -Conor Cusask & Diarmuid Coleman U12 Boys- Oisin Monaghan & Keith O'Donnell U12 Girls- Eimear Watson & Emma O'Mahony U14 Boys- Eoin Geraghy & Julias Dadacay U14 Girls- Kate O'Mahony Handwriting There were a great number of entries in the handwriting competition which was run by the local schools. The following children won the Killaloe Local competition and will represent Killaloe in the county competition U10 girls - Rebecca Rodgers U10 boys - Dylan Tuohy Well done to Hannah Power and Leah McKenna, both pupils of Killaloe Girls School who won the U10 handwriting for Ballina Community Games and Derg Community Games respectively. Well done to Emily Byrne and Eoin Geraghty who won silver in the county competition. This was a superb result in a competition where the standard was very high. Many thanks to Eva Scanlan & Deirdre Coleman for coordinating the event. Page 3 Cycling on grass The county 2km cycle on grass competition took place in CooraClare. Adam and Shane Geraghty represented Killaloe and did Killaloe proud. Many thanks to Fiona O’Mahony for coordinating the event. and enjoyed the day. . Camogie Swimming Our swimming team had a very successful outing in the county swimming finals in Ennis Pool. Medal winners were Rowan Barrett Silver U14 Breaststroke, and Laura McGrath Bronze U12 Backstroke. Certificate winners Adam Geraghty(U14) and Oisin Minogue (10) and relay team were Maria Scanlan, Ava Barrett, Eibhlis Coleman, Aine Scanlan, Eimear Watson,. Other participants who also had great swims were Shane Geraghty, Laurent and Alexander Chateau. Well done to all. Many thanks to Eva Scanlan for coordinating the event and her continued support in promoting Community Games in Killaloe ` Tennis Our tennis team won silver in the county community games competition in Ennis. This was our first time entering the tennis event. With the help of Dearbhla Cronin promoting tennis in the boys school, a number of boys were very keen to compete. Killaloe Ballina tennis club allowed us their courts and Dearbhla coached the team. Team: Ava Barrett, Eimear Watson, Eibhlis Coleman, Nathan Kenny, Oisin monaghan, Dean Lawlor, David Chockijachk and Kevin Raggot. Following on from this competition the boys school continued with tennis coaching for all the school during Active School’s week. . Many thanks Deirdre Coleman for coordinating the event. The U14 Killaloe camogie team gave a great performance in the County Camogie event against Feakle - Killanena under the guidance of coach John Daly. The girls narrowly lost against Feakle-Killanena who subsequently went on to win the County competition outright. It was a great opportunity for girls who are members of other nearby camogie clubs to come together and play in a community event. Many thanks to Eva Scanlan and Fiona O’Mahony for coordinating the event. SpikeBall Boys U14 Well done to boys u14 spikeball who were narrowly defeated in munster semifinal. The team consisted of Adam Geraghty, tony Seymour, Eoin Geraghty, Patrick Lucas, Rowen Barrett and Michael Goss. Many thanks to Orla Seymour for training and supporting the team. Gaelic Football Our Boys U10 Gaelic Football team also competed recently in the Banner Grounds in the County Competition. The team players were Diarmuid Coleman, Cormac Byrne, Tony Foley, Cathal Scanlan, Julian Heaney, Ciaran Rogers, Tom Seymour, Adam Nolan, Conor Cusack, Tom Wood, Cian ODonnell, Aiden Foley, Oisin Minogue and Luke Dillon. All played really well for their first gaelic football competition Page 4 Sports Day On the May bank holiday the Committee organised a very successful open sports day at which the local athletics events were run off. The day was a wonderful community occasion with lots of fun activities like egg & spoon, 3 legged race, teddy bear race, tug of war. All under age track races were run and the qualifiers went forward to Ennis County Games. Below are a sample of the many excellent photos taken by Veronica Collins. Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 County Finals Ennis Oisin Monaghan qualified for final of U12 600m and Oisin Minogue won bronze in 200m The Killaloe athletics team travelled to Ennis to participate in 60, 80 & 100M sprints, 200, 400, 600 & 800M distances, ball throw, long Puc and the relays in June. The team marched in the opening ceremony parade, and proudly carried out the Kincora Call earning the winning prize in the parade Special thanks Dean Mulqueen won silver in u14 100m. Oisin minogue won bronze in the U10 200m. Alexander Wood won a certificate in u12 100m. Boys U12 relay team won bronze - Alexander wood, Stephen Geraghty, Gearoid Rodgers, Oisin Monaghan and Andy Lynch. Jennifer Daly won her heat in the girls U12 600m and finished 6th in the final. Killaloe Community Games committee would like to thank all those who have helped out behind the scenes and the parents of all children who took part in the events. Many thanks to the teachers of Killaloe Girls and Boys schools for promoting community games. Summary Overall it has been a good start and the experience to date has provided the Committee with invaluable insight on what works and what doesn’t. The plan is to use this to continue growing the interest in the Killaloe area for both children and parents alike and to put some of these learning’s into practice for 2015.
