Subject: Building a Pet Bank Participants: Anyone interested in helping the shelter Objective: To help raise funds to support the Humane Society's shelter (see also "What To Do When Your Pet Bank Is Finished"). What To Do: Create an artistic work from recyclable materials. Participants are encouraged to recycle materials found in their home in a variety of creative and artistic ways. If you don’t want to create your own donation bank, we have a few plastic donation banks available. Contact Heather (information below) for more information. Place your Pet Bank in a local retail store or bank. Contact Heather Kinaitis at (330) 4870333 x232 or [email protected] to have the bank location recorded. Contacts: In March 2010, Pawsibilities® Humane Society of Greater Akron moved its shelter to 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, Ohio from its former location on Quick Road in Peninsula, Ohio. Examples: Red Dog Suggested Materials 1. One 2 liter plastic pop bottle 2. Newspaper 3. Tissue wrapping paper 4. Scissors 5. Paints and paintbrushes 6. Tape or glue 7. Styrofoam balls, one the size of a softball and one the size of a tennis ball (or use a tennis ball!) 8. Poster board Instructions 1. Wash and dry your plastic pop bottle. 2. Thin some white glue with water. 3. Rip up your wrapping paper into strips. 4. With a paintbrush, brush thinned glue on bottle and paste wrapping paper strips onto your bottle. Repeat this until your bottle is completely covered. Set aside and let dry completely! 5. Carefully scoop out the softball-sized Styrofoam ball so that it sits on top of the bottle. Glue it in place. 6. Cut the tennis-ball size ball in half. Glue half of it on the “head” to make a snout. Paint or glue on a felt nose. 7. Paint or glue on felt eyes . Let dry! 8. Make ears from colored poster board or felt. Glue onto head and let dry. 9. Draw legs from poster board and glue to body. 10. Cut hole for coins or paper money. Be sure it is large enough and visible to donor. 11. To preserve the finished bank, it's recommended to paint (or spray) with clear shellac. 12. Print a note that can be glued or taped to the front of your Pet Bank citing "Please help all the homeless animals at the Pawsibilities Humane Society of Greater Akron". Example, Blue and White Cat Suggested Materials 1. 2 Liter plastic soda bottle 2. White and blue acrylic paint 3. Fine sand paper 4. Poster board 5. White yarn 6. Craft glue 7. Markers 8. Paintbrush 9. Pipe Cleaners (Whiskers) Instructions 1. Sand the surface of the bottle. This will allow the acrylic paint to adhere to the surface. 2. Paint the bottle white. Allow to dry. 3. Draw a cat or dog’s face using the directions below. 4. Trace animal head on poster board; cut out 2 outlines. 5. Glue edges of poster board together, adding white yarn hair at top of head, and leaving opening at bottom for the top of the bottle. 6. Draw eyes, nose, and other facial features on cat or dog. 7. Slip head onto top of bottle. Secure with glue or tape. 8. Draw legs on poster board, cut out and glue onto bottle. 9. Cut hole for coins or paper money. Let’s draw a cat’s face Draw a circle about the size of a quarter LIGHTLY in pencil. Next, draw an oval lightly overlapping the circle like this. Draw two eyes (ovals with dots in them for pupils) and rest them on the line going through the circle. Next, add a triangle under the eyes. Draw the letter U three times for the mouth. Draw marks at the end of the mouth for smile lines Draw some teeth, ears, and the neck. Scribble in some hair, add details like whiskers Now let’s draw a dog face Start with a circle and oval like this Add eyes on this line. Add an oval for a nose and the letter U twice for a smile Another letter U makes a great dog tongue Ovals make great ears. Add eyebrows, scruffy hair, Example, Brown Dog Suggested Materials 1. One 1 liter plastic pop bottle 2. Construction paper in the colors of your choice 3. Paint Stirs or Popsicle Sticks 4. Tape 5. Craft Glue 6. Hot Glue Gun Instructions 1. Wash and dry your plastic pop bottle. 2. Cut a rectangle shape out of construction paper to wrap around the middle of the plastic bottle to create the body of your animal and secure with tape. 3. Use construction paper to cut out shapes to create ears, eyes, and tail. If desired, cut out additional shapes to create spots. Use craft glue to glue construction paper together. 4. Attach ears, eyes and tail shapes with tape to plastic bottle 5. Use paint stirs or popsicle sticks cut down to desired size to create legs. Then cut additional sticks to lay flat as the paws. 6. Use a hot glue gun to glue legs and paws together. Once they have dried use the hot glue gun to glue legs/paws to the body of your animal. 7. Cut hole for coins or paper money. Make sure it is large enough and visible to donor. 8. Print a note that can be glued or taped to the front of your Pet Bank citing "Please help all the homeless animals at the Pawsibilities Humane Society of Greater Akron".
