Please read this syllabus in its entirety. It is a part of the course content.
It is important that you understand what is required in this course and the
timeframes for completing assignments and activities.
Course Description:
Consider this as a capstone course. The main emphasis in this course will be on how to write
publishable research papers and how to design an empirical research. Every week you will be
given a task and it will be your duty to come with a 10 to 15 page report to be discussed,
dissected in the following class meeting. Remember the emphasis is mainly on writing rather
than on presentation. All of you will be working on the same topic or problem but
COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY. You can discuss the project at hand outside the class
rooms with your colleagues but writing has to be completely individual. This is being done with
a specific purpose in mind. One of you may write the assignment very professionally whereas
some one might make a complete mess of it, therefore you will learn not only what to do, but
most importantly what NOT TO DO. This class is going to be very time consuming. The
structure of this class is such that one other professor will be visiting the class with me each
time to give you an assignment or to discuss an area of interest.
Learning Objectives/Outcomes
It must be clear from the description above, that in this course your individual
capacity, integrity and work ethic will play a major role. There will be absolutely no
group assignment or group discussion. Only discussion will be on the day you bring
in your completed assignments so that we can discuss in the class as to what to do
or not to do. The primary focus of this course is how to write publishable research
papers for publication in refereed journals. You will be surprised to know that in
the end it is the writing and presentation of your research in writing that matters.
We will continue on with this course in Summer 2006, but there the emphasis will
be to produce a defendable dissertation proposal. Therefore, in Summer you will
register with me and the major professor of your choice so that you have a
proposal to defend in Fall of 2006. Let me hasten to add that the choice of a major
professor is completely up to you. My job will be that of a facilitator. I want each of
you to finish the program by Summer 2008 or before.
