Naming Molecular Compounds
in order to name molecular compounds there are a number of definitions and steps you are required to learn
(a) IUPAC: International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (they are the world authority on chemistry)
Sep 77:51 AM
1
(b) Molecule:
Contains two or more elements
Ex. Water (H2O)
(c) Molecular Element: A molecule where all the atoms are the same
Ex. Oxygen (O2)
Sep 77:56 AM
(c) Molecular Compounds: Contain nonmetals only
Ex. Water: (H2O)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
(d) Ionic Compounds: Contain a metal and a non
metal
Ex.
Potassium Chloride (KCl)

(e) Molecular Formula: Chemical formula which donates the number and type of different atoms in a molecule
(f) Empirical Formula: Simplest chemical formula that can be written for a compound (smallest whole number ratio of atoms)
Example:
Empirical Formula HO
Molecular Formula H2O2
Empirical Formula CO2
Molecular Formula C2O4

Steps to Naming Molecular Compounds
1. Write the name of the first element
2. Write the name of the second element with ide
ending
3. Use prefixes to indicate the atoms in each element
4. Erase the prefix mono if it in on the first name
Sep 710:06 AM
Ex. 1: Write the IUPAC name for the following:
(a) CCl4
(b) P3S6
Sep 710:09 AM

Ex.2: Write the chemical formula for each of the following.
(a) Nitrogen trichloride
(b) Triphosphorus pentabromide
