Catch the Summer Reading Bug!

Catch the Summer Reading Bug!
RPRY LOWER SCHOOL, SUMMER 2016
June 2016
Dear Parents and Students,
The summer is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce our philosophy of ongoing learning. One of the best ways
to achieve this is through reading: reading for fun, for learning, and for enjoying books to take you places
where you have never been before!
In addition to enriching your life and taking you on amazing trips, summer reading helps to:
1. Link your classroom learning with the outside world
2. Create a bridge for development of reading skills in a fun way
3. Foster excitement for reading
4. Enrich your knowledge in all areas: literature, math, science, history, etc.
Attached you will find a suggested reading list for students entering Kindergarten through Grade 4
and a Reading Log. You may look in your local library, bookstores, and online for other books you might love
to read. If you find other wonderful books, send us their titles so we can include them on our list in the future.
In the Lower School, the summer reading is optional. However, we urge parents to encourage students to
read, or to read to the younger children, at least 5 books over the summer. Every now and then, parents can
also encourage children to read to them from their books.
We are offering incentives to students in all grades of the Lower School to inspire you to read!
Every student who reads at least 5 books and responds to the question listed for each book read or,
for students entering Kindergarten, tells the answer to an adult who records it:
1. Entering Kindergarten: Students will enjoy a special celebration in class.
2. Entering Grades 1-4: Students will enjoy a special Literary Lunch in September.
Don’t forget to bring your completed log back to school during the first week of school.
Finally, to make the experience even more fun, here are a few online reading resources for your enjoyment.
