Overview
Overview
This manual covers setup and use of the Good Connect app on your iOS device, introducing you to the features
in Good Connect so you can begin securely chatting right away.
What is Good Connect?
Good Connect is a secure, mobile, instant messaging application that is built on Good Dynamics™ (GD). It has
similar features to consumer instant messaging applications but, instead of connecting to consumer services like
AIM, GTalk, Yahoo Messenger, or MSN Messenger, Good Connect connects to enterprise messaging systems like
Microsoft Lync and IBM Sametime.
Installing the Good Connect App
First, you will need an access key to set up your app. There are a couple of different ways to acquire one from
your IT administrator:
1. Request an access key from the admin, or
2. Request the URL of a self-service account and issue a key to yourself.
Once you have requested a key, it is sent as part of a welcome email to your enterprise. Three parts comprise the
access key, each containing five (5) case-sensitive alphanumeric values.
When you have an IT-provisioned access key in hand, go to the Apple app store and download Good Connect. An
Easy Activation key may also be used when set up in your use policy by IT. An Easy Activation key, when
permitted, is supplied by another Good app, like Good Access or Good Work, as long as these applications are
already installed on your device. If such is the case, all you'll need is the login password for the activation app.
Otherwise, the first time you open Good Connect on your mobile device, you’ll need to set up the application
with your enterprise credentials and register your access key.
Again, depending on the controls established by your IT administrator, you will have the following options:
i. Setting up the app based on an emailed invitation from IT that contains a unique activation key
ii. Setting up the app using Easy Activation, based on the activation key of an already installed Good app on your
device
iii. Provisioning an access key from a self-service Good Control instance maintained by your IT department.

Installing the Good Connect App
To set up the application and register your access key:
1. Enter your (a) login password for an available Easy Activation app or (b) Email Address and the Access Key
provided by IT via email.

error message, as well as a retry option.
3. Enter a Good Connect application password and confirm it. If your device is equipped with Touch ID, you can
turn this option on to use in lieu of the password except on initial startup.
4. Read the End User License Agreement and, if you accept the terms, tap Accept.
5. If other devices, including your principal workstation, are also signed in, you will receive a notice advising you
of this condition. Simply tap OK.

Changing Notification Settings
If you open the Good Connect app and then switch to some other app, Good Connect is put in a background
(suspended) state. When operating in the background, Good Connect will send you an Apple Push Notification at
the top of the screen or in an alert, when a new message arrives.
If you keep the Good Connect app in the background long enough, it will log you out. The default duration is 24
hours, but this is configurable by your company. Ask your IT admin how long you can be inactive before getting
logged out.
For additional control over Good Connect notifications on your device:
1. Open your native Settings , then tap Notifications.
2. Tap the Good Connect option.

3. Change the settings as best suited to your needs.
The possible options are as follows:

alerts), Banners, or Alerts.
2. Badge App Icon - controls whether or not the Good Connect app icon includes a count of the number of
unread messages.
3. Sounds – enables/disables audio notification. This sounds setting for Good Connect does not override the
sound setting for the device. In other words, if the option for sound is turned off on the device, turning the
option for sounds on in Good Connect will not result in an audio alert when you receive new messages.
4. Show in Notification Center – sets whether or not Good Connect message alerts are shown in the device
Notification Center.

Transitioning Conversations Across Devices
The information presented here only applies if you are using Good Connect in a supported Microsoft OCS or
Microsoft Lync environment. In an IBM Sametime environment you can only sign in to one device at a time. Signing in to any device will automatically log you off of other devices.
You can follow an ongoing chat across multiple devices with Good Connect. For example, you can start a chat
from your desktop and then continue on a mobile device as you leave your home or office. There is a possibility
that, while doing so, some messages may go to the inactive device during the transition from one device to
another.
When you are signed into multiple devices, Good Connect sends you an alert:

Frequently Asked Questions
Listed here are the answers to commonly asked questions.

A: Good Connect is a stand-alone product offering IM and Presence. During an IM conversation, you can view the
contact information of the person you are messaging. The contact info panel of Good Connect shows the
contact’s email address along with other available information from Active Directory. Tapping the email address

brings up GFE, composes a new email, and pre-populates the To field in the email. This feature requires GFE
v2.0.0 or higher to be installed on the device. Q: How do I know if I have a new IM when Good Connect is in the background of my iOS devices?
A: You are notified, as shown in Changing Notification Settings , when a new message arrives and Good Connect
is in the background.
Q: Does Good Connect sign out when the app switches to the background? How does the mobile session
work?
A: No, Good Connect does not automatically sign you out when the app goes into the background. Good
Connect is configured, by default, to keep you logged in for 24 hours (though your IT admin can change this
setting). This 24-hour session renews itself every time you launch the app and enter your password. You can also
set the Away preferences to change your status after a user-defined time interval.
