NOTE: QUALIFYING RACES are not competitive and will not be included in the starts of a horse, but are merely used to determine the manners of a horse and its ability to complete the course within the time standards set by the judges for the class in which the horse will compete.
Occasionally a horse will race where according to his earnings it appears that he wasn't eligible. However, this horse qualified under a secondary condition (Also Eligible). The past performance line will carry the main condition of the race as it shows the actual class of competition.

U.S.T.A. BREAKING RULE - (a) When any horse, or horses, break from their gait in trotting or pacing, their driver shall at once, where clearance exists, take such horse to the outside and pull it to
its gait. (b) The following shall be considered violations: (1) Failure to properly attempt to pull the horse to its gait. (2) Failure to take to the outside where clearance exists. (3) Failure to lose ground
by the break (c) If there has been no failure on the part of the driver in complying with (b-1, 2 or 3), the horse shall not be set back unless a contending horse on his gait is lapped on the hind quarter of the breaking horse
at the finish. (d) The stewards may set any horse back one or more places if in their judgement any of the above violations have been committed.
SOME KEY NOTES REGARDING THE PYLON RULE - Rules determined by the Ohio State Racing Commission are used by the judges at the state's harness tracks to govern the sport. These rules may,
of course, vary from state to state. Here is the Ohio rule regarding the "Eurorail" pylons: 3769-14-53 HARNESS TRACK WITHOUT A HUBRAIL - In the event a horse or part of the horse's sulky leaves the
course, and if, in the opinion of the judges, that action gave the horse the unfair advantage over other horses in the race, the horse may be disqualified or placed back one or more positions.
