Fire in Pollensa
A woman aged 70 and her
disabled son were rescued
yesterday from their home
on Carrer Cecili Metel after
their 4th-floor apartment
caught fire. The fire started
about 8.25pm and two fire
engines and a ladder truck
from Alcudia and Inca fought
the fire until about 10pm. The
fire caused major damage in
the apartment.
Alcudia Keeps its
Blue Flags
City officials in Alcudia
hoisted the blue flags that
the city has kept for Puerto
Alcudia beach, Ciutat Blanca
and Alcudiamar. The City
Council and representatives
from the yacht club
were delighted that the
municipality managed to
retain the blue flags that
are indicative of the town’s
quality of beaches and port
facilities.
Linea Verde in the
North
Alcudia’s townhall has
adopted the online
service, Linea Verde, a
communication service
between resident and council
for residents to report
damage and ask questions.
Using a phone or online,
citizens can report anything
from damaged pavements
to sewer cleaning, from
electricity and rubbish
collection, park facilities
to public benches. Mayor
Antoni Mir said the service
would “bring the citizen to
the government and make it a
participant and help provide
a quick solution.”
It is available via telephone,
App and online at www.
liniaverdalalcudia.com.
Linea Verde is also available
in Pollensa, as reported
mayor of Búger, Liniu Siquier,
says the campaign is in direct
response to complaints.
Sewage Problem in
Alcudia
Too Hot in the
Health Centre
A recent problem with
broken pipes that carried
dirty water in the Avenida
Toucan area of Port of
Alcudia caused unrest among
the neighbourhood. The
dreadful odour hit the area
last weekend and residents
were left angry. The problem
was detected on Saturday
and the Municipal Services
of Alcudia (EMSA) and the
team worked together over
two days to fix the problem.
Patients and health workers
in Puerto Alcudia have
suffered harsh conditions for
the past 6 weeks, faulty air
conditioning has left them
only fans to cool the air. With
the current heatwave, the
working conditions have set
tempers high and both staff
and patients complained
to authorities. Some
rooms reached 34degrees,
which is higher than the
permitted temperature in
public buildings, where the
maximum temperature in
summer is 26 degrees.
Meanwhile, a new
neighbourhood group
has created a platform for
residents and businesses
collecting signatures to
demand an urgent solution.
War on Dog Mess
The new administration
of Búger has set a goal to
eliminate dog waste from
the streets and launched
an awareness campaign
to inform residents of the
expectations. The goal is for
pet owners to remember their
obligations to collect dog
mess and keep the dog on a
lead.
The Council announced last
week that they would deliver
to dog owners materials
such as belts, bags and waste
collection bag holders. The

However, the problem is not
temporary; the treatment
plant, which is located close
by, emits odours continuously.
Both municipal officials
and technicians consider
the system as out-dated and
inadequate and it is generally
understood that the problem
will not be resolved until a
new treatment plant is built.

Alcudia Cable Back
on the Agenda
Mayor Antoni Mir and his
colleagues met with the
new Minister of Planning,
Energy and Mobility, Joan
Boned last week to discuss
the controversial installation
of the high-voltage cable in
the town. The Government
pledged to work on rerouting the cable.
They discussed the opposition
to the cabling and the danger
posed by the electromagnetic
radiation. The response was
positive and the cabling,
which has been a priority
for all parties during the
election campaign. Mir has
opposed the current plan and
realignment is a top priority.
The Minister of Energy
left with all the relevant
documentation and will
meet again with the aim of
defining an action plan that
will see the proposed route
with a bypass.
Neighbours staged many
demonstrations in which
they requested a bypass in
the route of the cabling
concerns are due to links
between prolonged exposure
to electromagnetic fields and
serious diseases.
Anger in Muro
The anger of Muro residents
over the continuing odour
and sewage problems in the
town moved to the Town Hall
last week in an extraordinary
plenary session which the
opposition requested. Dozens
of residents filled the meeting
room despite the start time
of 8am, a time that was
criticized by residents.
Mayor Marti Fornes explained
that the current situation is
due to the distance between
the developments where
the problems are worse and
the treatment plant. He told
the session that it is a “very
complex” network that
requires fourteen pumping
stations because the area “is
quite flat.” He assured people
that the City is making all
efforts to ensure that the
problems of waste and odour
are resolved as quickly as
possible.
The problem in the area
of Polygon 7 is related to
the system of collecting
rainwater, which – the
mayor acknowledged – is
insufficient, he has pledged to
carry out improvements.
The opposition proposed
a series of actions to
minimize problems such
as the installation of filters
to reduce odour, which
the mayor and his team
supported and assured will be
launched.
Without any urgent action
promised, the neighbours left
not exactly satisfied and many
lamented the political promises
but no solutions. That said,
their voice is now unified and
it seems the residents will
take the issue on.
¡Hola!
It’s been a really interesting
couple of weeks. Meeting
characters in our community
is a great reminder of why life
here is so colourful and so fun.
Meeting Pollensa’s Mayor, Dr
Garry Bonsall, new business
owners fresh from the UK and
Norai, the superb Joan Mas of
2013, have all been highlights
and I only hope that these
kinds of meetings continue.
Our community is a great one
and mixing with Mallorquins
and British, for business and
for pleasure, is crucial to a
full and integrated life here in
Mallorca.
Enjoy the fiesta and take care
in the heat.
Hasta luego!

Two years ago, Gotmar was
in a state of disrepair, it was
even considered one of the
poorest neighbourhoods
on the island with its lack
of facilities and public
services. Now, thanks to
the organization of the
AAVV (the Gotmar Vecinos
Association) and its unified
voice led by the Founder
President Dr Garry Bonsall,
the neighbours got their
point across and received a
unanimous vote under the
previous government under
Tomeu Cifre. Following that
came a €3million grant from
the Consell of Mallorca that
has helped Gotmar receive
new streets, new lighting,
new drainage, even fibre
optic cables.
Now a seasonal resident,
Garry Bonsall has passed the
president’s hat to Miguel
Sabater, but he still keeps a
close eye on what goes on in
the community. Talking to
TOTN over
the last couple
of weeks, the
Founder President
expressed his
concerns on the
future of Gotmar,
he said “it’s so
easy to just drop
it now, but you have to
keep the ball rolling all the
time.” He was referring to
the general maintenance of
Gotmar and in particular
of the no-man’s land, on the
roadsides. Left unmaintained
it could make the area fall
back into its former scruffy
self. Dr Bonsall’s proposal is
to invite residents to adopt
the space outside their home,
to take it a step further and
really beautify the streets. In
a recent meeting with Mayor
of Pollensa, Miquel Angel
March, 12 points were raised.
Among the suggestions
made by Dr Bonsall were the
general cleaning and upkeep
of Gotmar, trees to replace
the palms that were ravaged
by disease, storage facilities
for maintenance staff and
equipment and awards
for the best neighbours
who contribute to the
beautification of their area.
All were taken on board
by March and his deputy,
Tomeu Cifre, Councillor
for Planning, Environment
and New Technologies.
In all, the dialogue was
positive, the mayor and
his colleague listened and
perhaps we will be seeing
the start of a rewards-based
neighbourhood maintenance
scheme. Watch this space, in
Gotmar at least.
Meeting the Mayor, Miquel Angel March
Pollensa’s new Mayor, Miquel
Àngel March Cerdà met with
TOTN last week:
TOTN How has your first
month been in office?
Mayor It’s been a busy time,
I’ve been getting to know
the office, how everything
works and the people I’ll be
working with. I have had a lot
of meetings with people who
have come to tell me problems
and complaints.
TOTN Did you have any
surprises?
Mayor Not too many
although some areas were
worse than I thought. In some
departments, like urbanismo
(planning) there were bigger
problems than I anticipated.
TOTN What are your main
goals for the next four years?
Mayor I will keep to the
principles of the campaign,
keep transparency in all
aspects, increase participation
of society, internally I want
to create a more modern
and robust government
and one more focused on
environmental sustainability.
Lastly, I want to bring the
town out of the state of crisis
and improve conditions.
When it came to
communication channels
between the expat
community and the local
government, the idea of an
association was a recurring
theme. Given the success of
the Asociaciones de vecinos
in Gotmar, this is not a bad
idea. Should anyone like
to get involved with the
local politics of the town
and help establish regular
interaction between the
expat community and local
government, get in touch for
more details about forming
an association.
Alfonso Loeffler Exhibition Howard Mullen
Thursday 9th saw the opening of a
retrospective exhibition of the paintings
of Alfonso Loeffler at The Vecinos Rooms
in Puerto Pollensa. Representatives of The
Vecinos and the local Council welcomed
guests and many sections of the local
community were present, reflecting the high
esteem in which Alfonso was held in the area.
The Vecinos rooms provided the ideal
backdrop to this occasion, with the sliding
doors opened to make one huge modern art
gallery. There were
many happy faces
among the guests
who enjoyed a
wide range of
Alfonso’s art, over
a glass of cava and
Dorothy Loeffler’s
famous sausage rolls! It was a delightful
evening, and a fitting tribute to Alfonso
Loeffler the artist.

Being
Joan Mas
A personal account from Joan ‘Norai’
Cerdà Cifre, Joan Mas in 2013
Fiestas in Mallorca are in the blood. No need for programmes
and timings, local people who grew up with these week-long
celebrations just know. Perhaps not the finer details, but when
it comes to the Marxa Fresca, the Alborada and what time the
Moros will be arriving in Placa Major, for example, they know.
Fiestas are kept going year after year, they are testament to
how proud people are of their villages. The time-honoured
customs are loved and respected and for Pollensa, the Moors
and Christians battle is their day. Come August 2nd you will
see people young and old belting out the town’s anthem, Visca
Pollensa with tear-inducing pride.
But perhaps the largest dose of goosebump, hair-on-end thrill
on August 2nd will come when Joan Mas jumps out of the
window of his family home and calls, cries, shouts or wails
for his townsfolk to come out (in their pyjamas) and kick the
invading Moros out of town. And back in the day, that is what
happened. Many people died but the Cristianos managed to
keep hold of Pollensa, which is why Joan Mas is such a hero.
His statue stands tall and proud in the Joan Mas Gardens and
kids revere this icon from a young age.
It is visiting this statue with his granddad that ignited the
passion in Joan ‘Norai’ Cerdà Cifre’s heart and instilled the
desire to one day be Joan Mas. But winning the election was
not plain sailing for him. Having moved to Palma for work,
Norai’s first three attempts left him out of the race. Once back
in his hometown, it was still another three attempts before he
made it. Campaigning is tough, “you have to push hard right
from the start.” Commenting on this year’s elections, Norai
said, “voting is very much about loyalty, families will vote for
their relatives and friends from the same group should avoid
entering the campaign in the same year, or you will split your
friends’ votes.”
And, he tells TOTN, “While everyone wants the honour of
being Joan Mas, not everyone can do it, you need confidence.”
True enough, it is like theatre and, “Some people choose not
to rehearse but I did. I had two different shouts, which I
showed my friends and they told me which one to go for. On
the day, I shouted until there was no more air in my lungs, I
really wanted people to hear me and I wanted everyone else to
feel it too. I was shaking to the very end.” Not everyone is so
rehearsed though; in fact some take a completely spontaneous
approach, which could be risky and maybe even disastrous.
In terms of organization, Norai explained, “Joan Mas needs a
troop of about 60 men to keep the frontline in order, Dragut
and his men need 150! There are a lot of drunk people all
getting together for the big clash and these men become your
safety net.”
“On the day, Joan Mas, Dragut and all the key characters need
to be in top shape. While the sword and the shield are not
heavy, Joan Mas has to carry the sword up high, which can be
tough on your arm. Before the day, we visit some houses that
are on route to organize a resting place where you can take
a drink of water. They are secret places but to be asked is an
honour and Joan Mas will have his photos taken with all the
family and children.”
He continues, “When you do it, it changes your life. It was all
a big party before, but when you’re Joan Mas you take on a
responsibility. All eyes are on you, the press are interviewing
you and you will be Joan Mas for a year…”
Watch this year’s Joan Mas, Josep Seguí “Balater” on August
2nd. The Battle commences around 7pm and be careful where
you stand to watch. It gets crowded and can be dangerous in
some areas for small children.

Natural horse care stable Hipica Formentor, located
close to Sa Pobla, just off the main road from the end
of the motorway to Alcudia, has launched an amazing
one-day ride. It begins around 9am at the stables and
the riders travel from the planted plains of Sa Pobla to
the historic villages of Campanet, Binibona and Caimari. The sound of hooves on cobbled streets conjures
up an image of the villages, as they would have been
hundreds of years ago. Between the villages, there is
beautiful countryside with stunning views as the riders
pass through the olive groves of Caimari and rise up
onto the mountain paths, where there are views to the
bays of Pollensa and Alcudia.

riders are then driven back to the stables in a minibus.
The horses return home in a horsebox.
This is a great way to get a flavour of the three and fourday trails which the stable also offers in the autumn,
winter and spring. They go higher still into the mountains and include the option to stay at the Refuge at Tossals Verds, as well as the monastery at Lluc. The horses
are sure footed on the roadways and tracks and the rides
include walking, trotting and cantering.

The Mallorquinista by Charles Nutter
Ninety Degrees
Radical plans have been agreed with Palma City Council to
completely redesign the Son Moix Stadium the home of Real
Mallorca since 1999. The club formerly played at the Luis Sitjar
ground for many years. It was a decrepit old football ground
but the fans were very close to the pitch and the atmosphere
was superb. Visiting teams were often intimidated by the place
none more so than Chelsea who lost a second leg semi-final in
the Cup Winners Cup.
back Hugo Gomes a Brazilian has been recruited along with
fellow Brazilians Vinicius Lima and Felipe from Gremio de
Porto Alegre. Portuguese winger, Moutinho was signed at the
express request of head coach Chapi Ferrer. Michel who has
had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus was a somewhat surprise
addition. Former Reading player Jimmy Kebe and German
centre-half Tobias Hennebole are on trial and hoping to
persuade Chapi that they have something to offer.
Palma City Council built Son Moix in 1999 as the host stadium
for the 1999 Summer Universiade (World Student Games) and
immediately afterwards it was leased to Real Mallorca. The
Luis Sitjar was literally falling to pieces and sadly it is now a
virtual ruin and an eyesore. The Son Moix has a running track
around the playing surface and with the fans being so far away
there is quite frankly more atmosphere on the moon. Club
owner Utz Claassen has come up with an innovative scheme,
which will change the stadium completely. Before the start
of the new season on the 23 August, temporary stands will
be erected behind both goals on top of the running track to
generate the long lost atmosphere. At the end of the season,
the pitch will be rotated by 90 degrees and the remaining
running track removed. At that point ownership of the the
Son Moix will be transferred to the club who will turn over
the Luis Sitjar to the Council who will turn the site into a
commercial centre. Hats off to Herr Claassen who is certainly
putting into action his promises to rejuvenate the club.
Sadly Pedro Bigas has departed after his contract expired. He
has swapped one holiday island for another by joining newly
promoted Las Palmas of Gran Canaria. He was a wholehearted
and loyal defender and he departs with the best wishes of all
concerned at Real Mallorca and hopefully he will be lining
up for his new team in 12 months time against Mallorca in La
Liga if the upcoming campaign is a success. Albert Riera and
Markovic have had their contracts terminated as expected and
more departures are imminent. Director of Football Miguel
Angel Nadal is now scouring the market for proven goalscorers
and an experienced central defender. When the team return
from the pre-season tour it is hoped that the squad will be
complete and Chapi can mould them into an effective unit.
On the playing side the team are currently on a pre-season
tour of Germany. The recruitment of new players is gathering
place. The previous arrivals of Timon, Camporbadal and
Oriol have been joined by Hector Yuste who was signed
from Granada on a 3-year deal for an undisclosed fee. He is a
commanding central midfield player and a born leader. Centre-
