INTRODUCTION
Willard Mitt Romney has been selected as a visiting
scholar to the Haas School of Business at the
University of California—Berkeley. He’ll be teaching a
course on “The Ethics of Fundraising” (Business 206).
At the behest of the Republican Party, Mitt will also be
relocating to Oakland to garner support for the GOP in
the heavily Democratic region. He has ordered a set
of criteria for optimal locations for his new mansion…
• Mitt says the three most important aspects of his
life are the GOP, his faith, and his family.
• Method 1: Suitability Analysis – Mitt Romney
has asked us to place him:
• Within 1½ mile of the Oakland Mormon Temple
& well away from any bars or Planned
Parenthood so that his surrounding
environment matches with his views
• Around like-minded people who are old & white
so he could feel safe
• Out of sight from too many lower-income folk
• Away from major forms of transportation &
violent crimes
• Despite the fact that Mitt plans on drinking only
bottled water, he would like to be as far away
from toxic sites as possible
• Close to hospitals & parks because of his wife’s
multiple sclerosis – hospitals for checkups and
emergencies & parks to help her relax
• Close to charter schools in order to influence
the youth & because he agreed to give
graduation speeches at a few of the schools
• on vacant lots because he wants to design and
build his own mansion

• Taking into consideration Mitt’s busy lifestyle
with his new position at Haas, his worldly travel
portfolio & his devotion to the Mormon Church,
we deemed it necessary to take into account the
accessibility of the following locations in relation
to his potential mansion sites:

• Oakland International Airport
• LDS Temple in Oakland in relation to his
potential housing sites
• He prefers that these routes do not intersect low
income areas, crime-driven areas, planned
parenthood locations and bars
• Overall Analysis
• Finding the most suitable locations for his
mansion based on his criteria for the Suitability
Analysis. These most suitable areas will be
narrowed to the best location with the route
analyses from the Network Analysis.

CONCLUSION
From our suitability analysis, we found a total of 7 optimal sites for Romney’s
mansion within a 1½-mile radius of the Oakland LDS Temple and his other
criteria. To narrow down our recommendation, we chose to factor in the
cumulative travel time for all three trips to Haas, the Mormon Temple, and the
Oakland Int’l Airport using a network analysis using those three points to
determine fastest routes while avoiding some of the more violent areas in both
Oakland and Berkeley. The following is a table of the amount of time (in
minutes) it would take to get to each particular location from a given possible
site:

It fulfills all the criteria given by
Romney, except for being in
close proximity to a charter
school or a hospital. Although
there is currently a house on
this site, we are almost 100%
positive Romney will be tearing
down this house (and those
within a ¼-mile of it) to make
way for the new Mitt Mansion.
