See back page for answers GLEBE COMMUNITY NEWS PAGE 4 Staff Profile: Glebe Community Development Project Name? Shane Reside Nickname? Only really ever been given the kind you wouldn't put in a newsletter - next question? What was your favorite T.V show as a kid? Hmm, I can't really remember what I was into as a kid. Since I've rediscovered the world of kids TV through my own kids though I can't get enough of Dora the Explorer. So much better than anything I remember. We've got the soundtrack and everything. What is one thing you would love to learn how to do? Scuba Dive! This winter. Favourite colour? How could you choose? I'll take em all. What is the best thing about Glebe? The stubborn refusal to give in to inner city gentrification - the presence of working class communities in places like Glebe keep them accesible for everyone. What is the best advise you have received? When I was a kid my dad pulled me aside and said "son, girls love someone who can dance. No one likes you if you hang around the edges of the dancefloor with your arms folded. Everytime you get the chance, get out on the dance floor and breakout some moves". Never let me down, thanks dad. Shane Reside Strange fact: No word in the English language rhymes with ‘month’, ‘orange’, or ‘purple’. GLEBE COMMUNITY NEWS PAGE 5 The latest addition to our series of wall murals in Mitchell St is fabulous. A community artist worked alongside kids and young teenagers from The Glebe Youth Service as they painted a mural along the long wall bordering the park of the corner of Glebe St and Mitchell St. And what a great job they did in the early Christmas school holidays! It has brightened up the park and, as one of the neighbours commented, “It was great to see the kids doing it, and it should make them feel proud.” Congratulations to those involved in painting the mural. The idea for the wall mural came from members of the Glebe Community Action Group. They approached The Glebe Society who then applied for a community grant from the City of Sydney. The Glebe Chamber of Commerce also provided some funding to enable the whole project to be completed. It shows us what can happen when people and the various organisations work together to improve the streetscape and brighten up the local parks. A special thanks to the Glebe Youth Service for their participation in the project and Written by Katharine Vernon GLEBE COMMUNITY NEWS PAGE 6 Wednesday Wheelie Warrior are not your typical motor cycle club. Although they look the part, the Wednesday Wheelie Warriors are a group of bike riders making a difference to Glebe and the wider community. This group has been in operation since 1996 and have been bringing joy to adults and children with disabilities by giving them a day out and rides on their specially adapted wheelchair motorcycles called the “Nippi‟s. Richard Bassett, club president and highway man says the group aims to “put smiles on their dials”. The group takes children out around eighty times a year and works with 17 schools, community centres and respite organisations. As well as the terrific work Wednesday Wheelie Warriors do with people with disabilities that also provide a valuable service in Glebe out of the Old Fire Station fortnightly. Every second Thursday, Wednesday Wheelies Warriors gather together to access food from the Food Bank and make it available to people with a pension card. Community members accessing the groceries are asked to register at Have-A-Chat café and are asked for a donation of $25 to recoup the cost to the team. If you would like more information drop into Have-A-Chat Café on Mitchell St. Wednesday Wheelie Warriers are not government funded and rely completely on donations. During the month of March, Tranby College flung open its doors to hold an amazing new event SUNDAYS in GLEBE. The four weekends saw over 300 people visit and partake in a huge range of activities and fun involving a Basket Weaving Workshop, an Arts Day, a Music Day and Film Night. Each Sunday had a distinct feel and flavour and included activities such as toolmaking, art workshops, music making, hip hop, live performances and all held in the extraordinary space that is Tranby College! The aim of the event was to bring together the Glebe community, families, elders and locals, Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people to share positive experiences. The kids got to have Face Painting, contribute to a HIP HOP song called „Our Place‟ (soon to be released!) and share in the wonderful and magical feel of Tranby College, a place of significant cultural and social importance in Glebe. Grown-ups got to soak in the amazing cultural skill of basket weaving or relax to the dulcet harmonies of the Stiff Gins. NSW Reconciliation, the Glebe Schools Community Centre would like to than the many amazing local artists, musicians, volunteers and community members who helped to make the event great. Please feel free to call Rose 9562 6355 or Kate 9566 1285 if you would like to find out more, provide feedback about the event or are interested in being involved in upcoming events.
