Volume 25 – Week 30 – Monday 15 September - 2014 From the Principal Dear Parents, We are all aware the community of Noosa has been rocked by the Bali surfing tragedy of local father, Peter Maynard. Many people have asked how they can help during this sad time for the family. Unfortunately money won’t find Pete and bring him back, but it will most definitely assist his wife and 3 young children to meet the family’s financial commitments. St Thomas More (and other schools) have been asked if our families can help this family out, so we will collect any donations from our families that come in this week and deposit them directly into Kylie Maynard’s bank account. We will ask students if they can bring a voluntary gold coin donation on Thursday (bookweek), but some families may be in a position to give more. Teachers will collect any money from students any time this week, or money may be dropped in at the office. We will make sure this gets to the Maynard family at the end of the week. I thank you for your generous support of this family in their time of tragedy. Congratulations to our Tournament of Minds team who competed at the state finals in Brisbane over the weekend. They performed wonderfully and received Honours and came second in the State in the Language Literature Challenge. This is a fantastic achievement and we are proud of our student representatives: Natalya Alexiou, Brenna Riley, Jade Gower, Rajah Naidoo, Billy Goulding, Luka Burgess and Mikael Pitot. Thank you to Cathy Maudsley who ran our school’s Tournament of Minds Competition and who supported these students so well. Our students were bussed down with students from St Teresa’s, who also did very well at the competition. The term seems to have flown and we find ourselves in the last week of term 3. I wish all our families and our staff a lovely term break in the next 2 weeks. School resumes on th Tuesday 7 Oct (the Monday is Labour Day public holiday). Please make sure that you mark in your calendars and make arrangements for your children for the Student Free th Day next term on Monday 20 Oct. This is a Brisbane Catholic Education Day in all Catholic Schools in the Diocese, where teachers get together to moderate student work. This year we will have over 100 teachers from 5 schools gather at St Thomas More to work together and share ideas for student assessment. This week is Bookweek, with the theme ‘Connect to Reading’. We look forward to the kids and staff dressing up in character on Thursday for bookweek. We will be holding the main assembly at 9am Thursday, followed by a parade and bookweek activities for the students. Use this week to encourage your children to read. Some need no encouragement, while others need some direction to find things they enjoy reading. If you can get your child to read each night, their improvement in reading and literacy will help them in every subject area throughout school. Happy reading! Assistant Principal Religious Education Mary - Disciple of Jesus This week the whole school gathers in prayer with a celebration of the Eucharist, a Mass! It will be an opportunity for the school community to celebrate the end of Term as well as to gather as a Catholic community in prayer. The theme of the mass is "Mary Disciple of Jesus" and is linked to our Marist Charism. Mary is celebrated as Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church. As a Marist community we look at Jesus with the eyes of Mary. Mary shows us a model of discipleship. Pope Francis has brought Mary into the conversation of Catholic in his recent encyclical. Mary is a companion of us all. Her unwavering presence in the life of Jesus shows us faith and way that we can be a disciple in our own life. Confirmation This Thursday. The Parish welcomes our Archbishop to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with students who have been preparing for this sacred moment. Confirmation preparation has been facilitated by the Parish Sacramental team under our Parish worker Mrs Maria Higginson. Parents and students have worked together to learn about the significance of this sacrament, the coming of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is the last of the three sacraments of initiation or belonging to the church. It is where candidates "confirm" their Baptismal promises and become full members of the Catholic Church. Many teachers have also assisted in the preparation of these children. It demonstrates the close and important links between Family, Parish and School. It is said that it takes a "Village to raise a child" and this is an example of this in action. The whole school wishes congratulations to our students at this Holy and sacred time. The sacrament will be celebrated at two times. At 5pm and 7pm Thursday evening. Prayer for our Confirmation Candidates Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Early Next Term, I will be taking long service leave and in my place the school welcomes Mrs Michelle O'Connor to the role of APRE. Michelle will no doubt do an amazing job and I am wishing that she doesn't do too good a job! In the time I will be walking part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain, Lavalla in France home of the Marists and then on to Rome. I am a little nervous as it's my first "big trip" but I look forward to spending many newsletters writing about all I have learnt and the many wondrous things I have done and the tapas I have discovered in Spain. Adios amigos Paul Rees -Assistant Principal Religious Education Tournament of Minds Result Congratulations to the Tournament of Minds Team who competed in the Language Literature Division at the Queensland State Finals at Griffith University on Sunday. The team received Honours (second place) for their outstanding performance and solution to the challenge. The team are to be congratulated for not only their performance on the day but also for all the hard work they put in prior to the competition. They trained at lunch times and after school and were very dedicated and committed to the task. Congratulations to Natalya Alexiou, Brenna Riley, Jade Gower, Rajah Naidoo, Billy Goulding, Luka Burgess and Mikael Pitot. Warm Regards Cathy Maudsley Assistant Principal Dear Parents, Staff and Students, What an excellent term! On behalf of all of our staff we thank you for your ongoing support of our work. In the mission statement, the school states that: “In our faith community, the individual's potential for learning is nurtured, the Christian story is embraced, faith is celebrated in prayerful and reflective ways, and the children discover a belief in their own capacity to contribute to the Church and society.“ I hope that that is your experience of STM. There is no perfection, no journey without hurdles and potholes. I’ve no doubt that when each of us reflects on our own life that is true of our personal faith and life journeys. It will also be true of our kids’ journeys- there’s no avoiding that. But it is present to me that everyone here at STM works tirelessly, engaging their hearts, to support the faith and academic progress of our students. For that we are blessed. th I wish all the students a restful, recuperative 2 weeks off and look forward to the return for term4 on the 7 of October. Please be th aware that the 20 of October is a Pupil Free Day where staff will engage in Professional Learning, moderating assessment items across different schools to ensure the judgments we make here at STM are in line with judgments made elsewhere. Before and After Supervision Time at School The school offers supervision for students from 8:15 in the mornings and up until 3:10 in the afternoons. No students should be on the school grounds outside of these times. We have a system where students come to the front office after 3:10 in the afternoon should their lift home be held up, but this should only be utilized in an occasional situation. Please ensure that your drop off and pick up arrangements meet these times. Mr Rees on LSL We wish Mr Rees a great trip overseas for his long service leave. He will away until week 6 of term 4 and his positive spirit will be missed around the school during this time. We welcome Mrs O’Connor and Mrs Pitot into the office as they fill the APRE role in his absence. Have a great two weeks holidays and God bless. Glen Bucklar Curriculum News Helping your child reflect on their learning The end of term is a perfect opportunity to have a conversation with your child about their learning. It is great for someone to take the time to ask them some questions about what they have really enjoyed learning about during the term, what has been easy and interesting for them and what has been really challenging or made them work really hard. You may already think you know this information, however by taking the time to have this specific chat with your child you will probably be amazed at what deeper insights you gain to help understand them more as a learner. Another really valuable question to include in the conversation is talk with your child about where they would like to go with their learning during term 4 – it may be that they want to really keep working on their spelling, or that they want to be able to understand how to read maths problems more easily or that they want to be more focused in their listening. Each child’s personal learning reflections will be quite different. Whatever the result, it will be a wonderful opportunity for even the very youngest of learners to articulate ideas about their learning and will also provide valuable information for you as a parent so that you may be able to support them in reaching some of these learning goals during the remainder of the year. Holidays are a great moment for children (and parents) to take some time to break from the routine of school and to enjoy doing different or new things. As you approach this holiday break I hope that you can help your child name and celebrate some of their great learning achievements this term. I wish you special moments together - sharing books, having great conversations about things that interest or amaze you and celebrating the gifts your child brings to your family. Our Under 9’s non-competitive division teams played their hearts out! Great work girls, we hope to see you again next season! Four STM Competitive teams made it through to the semi-final and 3 of our STM teams played in the Grand Final on Saturday. STM Bubblegums played zealously in the Grand Final and barely missed out on a win by only 2 points! STM Crikeys were keen to take out the Division one trophy and unfortunately were narrowly defeated in the last quarter. Our STM Flames showed great sportsmanship and team-work, winning their game and taking out the Grand Final Trophy! Well Done, Girls. We want this to be the children’s creation, so it is important that children only, place tiles, not parents. The parents’ role is one of support and enjoyment of being with your child as they create, and being a part of this visual arts project, that the whole school can enjoy for years to come. It is estimated that it will take about one month to complete. Children, of those parents who are unable to come, will be paired up with other parents or teachers. If you would like to be a part of your child’s project, all you need to do is to book an on-line time slot. To sign into Parent Teacher Online bookings: Go onto the school website. Click on Parent Teacher Online and it will take you to the link. Clink on the link under the PTO logo and you will then have access. Enter your Surname and PIN number as shown below. You are now able to select the day and time slot you are available to assist your child. If you require assistance, please contact Ellie at the school office. We still require some extra parent help for some specialised jobs. Please see our parent coordinator, Kate Powell, 0457040399 if you are able to assist with the following 2 activities. Smashing tiles into smaller pieces Grouting of mosaic once it is mounted on the external wall. Time slots are still available on the following dates: 16th & 17th September, 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th and 16th October.
