A
lthough we may not think of it
this way, generosity is the key
to happiness. We gradually
learn this lesson over a lifetime - some of

us learn faster than others.
Provincial Superior
In the popular comic strip “Peanuts,” Lucy asks Charlie Brown,
“Why are we here on earth?” He replies, “ To make others
happy.” It is reported that William Booth, founder of the Salvation
Army, was scheduled to make a major address to an international
convention of Salvation Army workers but was unable to attend.
When asked to send a message, he sent only one word: Others.
As I travel to attend various receptions at our schools to introduce
our capital campaign and to identify the needs of our brothers,
frequently I hear our alumni comment that our request for help
makes sense. Dedication and generosity were lessons they learned
from the example of their brother teachers - you are expected to
give back to the community.
The list of benefactors contained in this edition is a testimony that
many alumni and friends understand the importance of giving
back. The cliché “What comes around goes around!’ says it well.
When our alumni and friends were in need the brothers responded
generously and this made all the difference. Now the brothers are
in need and a response from those they have helped will make
the difference.
To those of you who have

give out of a spirit of
generosity and dedication,

I pray that as you put your head on the pillow each night you will
know the peace and satisfaction that comes when you have shared
what you have been given with the brothers and with others who
are in need.

Honoring
Lives of faith
H
onoring Lives of Faith – Securing the
Future’s Promise, our recently announced
capital campaign, is progressing in a very
positive and fruitful manner. This campaign represents
the first broad based appeal of the Brothers in their
164 years of service in this country. Our goal is $25
million! Contributions will be used to provide adequate
healthcare for our aging and infirm Brothers together
with a dignified retirement for those who are no longer
able to work. The funds will also be used to foster
vocations and recruit and train young men to continue
the work of the Brothers of Holy Cross.
This campaign is necessary, in part, because, until
recently, the Brothers did not receive a salary, other
than basic room and board. All the money the
Brothers would have received was returned to the
institutions as contributed services to improve the
physical facilities, enhance curriculums and provide
competitive salaries for lay teachers and administrators.

More importantly, the Brothers did not receive a
salary so that tuition could remain low and affordable
allowing anyone who wanted a Catholic education to
receive it.
The generosity of our benefactors over the years
sustains us in our ministry of educating the minds
and hearts of our young people, counseling youth and
troubled families, securing vocations for our future and
caring for our aged and infirm Brothers.
This issue of Brothers represents our first public
acknowledgement of donors to the Brothers of Holy
Cross over the past ten years. These individuals,
corporations and foundations have sustained us in
our work and provided the resources necessary for
support, facilities and staff to continue our mission.
You’ll note that many of our most generous
benefactors are our own Brothers. Because they
profess the vow of poverty, Brothers are not permitted
to use inherited assets for their personal benefit.
Therefore, many have chosen to bequeath these assets
to the community.
Our deepest thanks and gratitude are extended to
those listed for their generosity and support. Our daily
prayers are with them and all benefactors of the
Brothers’ many ministries.
