Susan B. Anthony
Definition-She was an American social reformer who played an important role in
the women's suffrage movement.
Description-She was committed to social equality, abolition of slavery, and was an
advocated for women’s rights. She also had extremely close ties with her lifelong
co-worker Elizabeth Cady Stanton who with her help founded the New York
Women’s State Temperance Society and was in favor of her ideas toward women’s
rights.
Significance-She was the main individual who fought for women’s rights.

Lucy Stone
Definition-She was a prominent American orator, abolitionist, and women suffragist
who promoted rights for women.
Description-She was the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree
and frequently spoke out for women’s rights and against slavery. She also helped
initiate the first National Women’s Right Convention. Her organizational activities
together with her fight for women's rights yielded obtainable gains even in the
difficult political environment.
Significance-Influenced Susan B. Anthony to take up the cause for women’s rights

Grant Administration Scandals
Definition-An action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing
general public outrage.
Description-A period of time in Ulysses S. Grant presidential administration (1869–
1877) where corruption was clearly shown through the various scandals that took
place during his time as President of the United States.
Significance-Because of the expansion of government caused by the civil war
corruption was the negative outcome.

Whiskey Ring
Definition-A scandal that occurred during Ulysses S Grant’s presidency.
Description-The scandal began in St. Louis but was also organized in Chicago,
Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and New Orleans. It involved specifically the diversion of
millions of federal taxes on liquor. Those who were involved were among
government agents, politicians, whiskey distillers, and distributors.
Significance-This event was seen as the symbol of Republican corruption.

Belknap Case
Definition-A scandal that occurred during Ulysses S Grant’s presidency.
Description-It involved Secretary of Interior William W. Belknap who had the
Bureau of Indian Affairs under him. With this power, he took half of the budget that
was supposed to be used to give the basic necessities to Native Americans.
Significance-This caused many Native Americans living in Indian territories to go
without food and clothing and they eventually died.

Credit Moblier
Definition- A scandal that occurred during Ulysses S Grant’s presidency
Description- It involved a credit company that was working with a South Pacific
Railroad. They took about two million dollars and then falsified the papers. Congress
knew what was going on specifically James Garfield. However, he was given a bribe
of 50,000 dollars to stay quiet.
Significance-Showed the corruption under Grants Administration.

Election of 1876
Definition-A formal and organized process of electing or being elected.
Description-The election between Tilden and Hayes where Samuel J. Tilden of New
York won the popular vote over Ohio's Rutherford B. Hayes and had 184 electoral
votes to Hayes' 165, with twenty votes uncounted. The twenty electoral votes were
in dispute in three states, Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina. The twenty
disputed electoral votes were ultimately awarded to Hayes after a bitter legal and
political battle, thus giving him the victory. Because this election was extremely
corrupt, the committee of fifteen was created to settle a compromise.
Significance-The most corrupt election in US History.

Committee of Fifteen
Definition-A group of people appointed for a specific function, typically consisting
of members of a larger group.
Description-It consisted of five members from the House of Representatives, five
from the Senate, and five from the Supreme Court. This group was created to settle
a dispute that was involved in the Election of 1876. They also wrote the Compromise
of 1877.
Significance- Created a compromise that settled the corrupt Election of 1876

The Compromise of 1877
Definition-An agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side
making concessions.
Description- It was an agreement made between the Democrats and Republicans
where in return for the Democrats' agreement in Hayes' election, the Republicans
agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South.
Significance-Ended the period of Reconstruction.

“The Unfinished Revolution”
Definition-A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new
system.
Description-In this case it is referring to the specific period of time during
Reconstruction. It also was the period of time where the freeman realized that they
could never attain equality because of the color of their skin. This would cause them
to still be seen as “lower” when compared to the white man and would never be
treated as an equal.
Significance-Many things were “unfinished” i.e. women’s rights/ freeman rights.
