¡A que sí!, fourth edition; by García Serrano, de la Torre, Grant Cash
Electronic spell-check program in Spanish (such as Microsoft WORD)

Recommended: Manual de gramática (any edition; Dozier & Iguina)
Course Description & Objectives
This course provides students with the cognitive and linguistic tools to communicate their ideas effectively at
the advanced level. Control of Spanish grammar and precision of vocabulary will be stressed within the
context of the tasks to be performed, i. e., grammar and vocabulary are presented in support of the stated
communicative functions, and not as an end in themselves. Discussion of reading selections and audiovisual
materials serves to sensitize the students to some social, cultural and political realities in Spanish-speaking
countries, as well as raise their awareness of organizational strategies of the text.
The successful student will:
ü Increase listening comprehension skills through exposure to conversations, speeches, as well as audio and
video material;
ü Apply effective reading techniques to assess and evaluate various print genres, such as articles, essays,
poetry and short fiction;
ü Develop strategies to respond appropriately in a variety of social situations;
ü Develop greater fluency in Spanish through interview, summary, paraphrase, commentary and oral
presentations;
ü Refine story-telling techniques by practicing description and narration;
ü Determine the effectiveness of oratory and writing styles by critiquing speeches and writing samples;
ü Utilize electronic dictionaries effectively;
ü Refine research skills, locate and identify credible sources.
Student Responsibilities
HOMEWORK. Come to class prepared. You are expected to have studied and prepared the material assigned
for the day so that you can participate in class activities and discussions. Your daily syllabus (Calendario)
indicates the topics of the sessions as well as the homework due on those dates. Additional homework may be
assigned during class and announced on Blackboard. Some homework assignments may be hand-written,
others need to be typed (*). Note that all typed documents are to be electronically spellchecked in Spanish.
Accent marks and other symbols need to be word-processed. Homework is accepted for credit IN CLASS
ONLY and ONLY as a document (hardcopy). No electronic versions are accepted. Whenever you are absent
from class, you will automatically lose the homework points for that session UNLESS the assignment is
submitted during that session. I will collect homework at random. Be advised that on any given day I may ask
you to submit the homework for that day AND ANY PREVIOUS homework assignment as well (10%). Keep
a folder with all your completed homework organized by date (see Calendario). Towards the end of the
semester you will submit your ANNOTATED Homework packet (5%).
Student Responsibilities
ATTENDANCE. Class attendance is important. Your participation is highly desirable, as you contribute to
class projects and engage in peer evaluations. You may miss 200 minutes of class without penalty. This
allows for absences due to illness and emergencies. After that, however, your grade will be reduced by 2%
for every 50 minutes missed. Three late arrivals equal one absence. If you miss 30 minutes of class (or more),
you are considered absent for that day. Leaving the classroom during lecture is treated as a partial absence
(equivalent to late arrival, at least).
Advertencia: In order to receive participation points, your physical presence in class is NOT SUFFICIENT;
you need to be mentally present as well. Engaging in activities unrelated to the task at hand (such as texting,
completing homework assignments, etc.) is equivalent to being absent for the session when this occurs. This
policy is strict because the conduct it addresses is a form of academic dishonesty.
Oral Presentations & Compositions
You will prepare and deliver two oral presentations, one early in the semester and another one towards the
end of the semester. There will be specific guidelines regarding topic, data collection, organization and length.
You will also write three compositions, two of which will be graded. These will enable you to express your
ideas in the context of themes chosen from the readings and supplemental materials. Each composition will
include several components or steps, reflecting our view of writing as a process. The final versions of the
compositions should be carefully edited and, of course, electronically spellchecked. If an essay is submitted
after the due date, the grade will be lowered by 2% for each day the paper is late. If an emergency (!) arises,
you may e-mail your composition before class for full credit, but I still expect a hardcopy.
Exams
There will be two written tests to determine your reading and writing skills as well as your knowledge of
topics and vocabulary reviewed in the texts and in class. If you miss a test for a legitimate and verifiable
reason, you will be allowed to take an alternate exam on the day of the final exam.***

Academic Misconduct
SDSU policies on cheating and plagiarism will be enforced. Penalties are severe. If you have any doubts
about what is or is not permitted, ask me. I do encourage team work. However, every student is expected to
write/type his or her homework, compositions, etc. A student who submits someone else’s work or electronic
document as his/her own is dishonest and will be reported to the Center for Student Rights and
Responsibilities.

*** Students with excused absences (i. e., religious holidays and athletic competitions) need to alert me during the first
two weeks of classes if these absences coincide with test days. This will provide sufficient time to make adjustments to
our schedule.
