Meet RCA’s Dennis Reese
Named RCA SVP/Promotion in March (Breaking News 3/27),
Dennis Reese brings an extensive background in Pop and Rock
promotion from his days with Epic, Capitol, Elektra and Columbia.
He jumped to the label world in 1993 after programming stops including then-Rhythmic Top 40 WHQT/Miami, then-Top 40 WHLY/
Orlando and Top 40 WCKZ/Charlotte.
CA: How did you get into radio?
DR: I was always into music. Every week we’d ride our bikes
to buy 45s and I would do talk-ups in my house pretending I was
on the radio.
What were those early records?
Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and
Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride.” We got enough bottle money
to buy two that day. I’m happy to say I still
own those 45s. My grandmother watched The
Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour and I became
a huge fan. Huge. I bought “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Southern Nights” on 45 and still
own those, too.
He was my gateway into country, but
Y-100 [Top 40 WHYI/Miami] is the reason I
got into radio. In the late ‘70s they would do
a 20-minute music sweep as Rock 100 and
Dennis Reese
then do a 20-minute block the next hour of
just dance songs as Disco 100. You would hear a Kansas song in
the Rock 100 stuff, but Donna Summer over here. That’s crazy to
think about now, but they were the No. 1 station and owned both
genres. So the music tastes I have are extreme.
Sony/Nashville EVP Steve Hodges has an opening.
Who calls who?
I knew Steve and [Columbia SVP] Shane Allen from my days
at Capitol. A mutual friend called and told me Steve was looking
to replace Keith Gale, who’s going to manage Jake Owen. He
said my name came up. I called Steve and said, “You know how
crazy I am about Nashville. I would love to talk.” He said let’s do
this the right way and get [Sony/Nashville CEO] Randy Goodman
in the loop calling [Epic CEO] L.A. Reid.

Love Can Build A Bridgestone: Gearing up for Luke Bryan
– and opener Adam Craig – in Nashville Friday (5/5) are
Cumulus’ Charlie Cook, Stoney Creek’s Chris Loss, WSIX/
Nashville’s Ryan McKiddy, SC’s Heather Propper and Andrea
Knipp, KILT/Houston’s Monica Lunsford and Cumulus/
Nashville’s John Shomby.
Radio On Luke Tour Launch
Luke Bryan’s Huntin’ Fishin’ & Lovin’ Every Day Tour opened with
a pair of hometown shows at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Friday and
Saturday (5/5-6). And radio pros were
there ... as were a few surprises.
Luke Bryan
Bryan opens his set “behind a
see-through curtain, so to speak,”
says Cumulus Nash Dir./Programming and WKDF/Nashville PD
John Shomby. “And it’s a great
song to kick it off – ‘Move.’” An
extended stage thrust brings the
action, and Bryan, closer to the
audience. “That made about 20
rows feel as if they were in the front
row,” Shomby says.

OFF THE RECORD: Jacob Davis
Black River’s Jacob Davis puts an
industry spin on the artist interview:
I grew up listening to KRMD/
Shreveport, LA. The Louisiana Hayride
used to be in Shreveport. It was like a
mini Nashville back in the day. Elvis, Hank
Williams, they all played the Hayride.
Shreveport radio was very important and
they held on to that legacy of the Hayride.
Jacob Davis
The first time I heard myself on the
radio was on WIRK/West Palm Beach, FL. They told us to be
listening at a certain time. I thought I was prepared, but it
overtook me. Everybody got quiet and we just drank it in.
My best and worst memory of radio tour are one and
the same. We did our WNOE/New Orleans visit on Mardi
Gras with the PD, David Dean, on Bourbon Street. It was a
total party. My worst memory is Wednesday morning. We were
all in really bad shape.
I would love to have dinner with Will Ferrell. I would get
a chili dog, just because I think he’d think that was funny.
My music is funky, soulful and makes you want to dance.
I grew up loving guys who just left it all on the stage. We tried
to take our live show and put it on tape – and I feel like we’ve
been successful with it.
My last impluse buy was a Tempur-Pedic neck pillow. I
paid $50 for it and it’s been the best investment I’ve made on
the road.
The most redneck thing I’ve done lately? I bought a
kiddie pool, filled it up with water and sat in it in my back
yard, drinking beer. And loved every minute of it.
I wish I’d written Brothers Osborne’s “Stay A Little
Longer.” It’s the catchiest song to come out on country radio in
a long time. I love them. I love the lyrics and it just gets stuck
in my head.
I’m a big two-pillow guy. I always sleep with two. It gets
annoying when we’re traveling in the van or on a bus, but
luckily at hotels, they stack those beds full of pillows.
I’d love to be stuck in Portland, ME. I fell in love with it.
It’s right on the water, it’s beautiful and the people were so
nice. And I could be wrong, but I think there are more craft
breweries in Portland than any other city in the country. And I
love some craft beer.

Luke Bryan and
Carrie Underwood
WSIX/Nashville APD/MD/evening host Ryan McKiddy calls
the energy “amazing.” He adds, “Every seat in the venue was
filled Friday and Saturday night and his signature Luke dance
moves were part of many songs. There was never a dull moment as fans sang along with hit after hit.”
A Nashville opener probably lent itself to top shelf surprises.
“Karen Fairchild came on to do ‘Home Alone Tonight’ and then
Luke jumped on the piano and she sang ‘Girl Crush’ – a nice
little left turn in the show,” Shomby says. “Also, ‘Mountain Music’
and ‘Sweet Caroline’ were interesting add-ons. Both made the
audience nuts!” Although, that’s a relative description of the audience’s state of mind. “They were crazy the whole night,” he adds.
The magic wasn’t
over, as McKiddy reports,
Luke Bryan and
“The surprises continued
Cole Swindell
the next night [with] Cole
Swindell and Carrie Underwood joining Luke.”
Bryan closes the show
with “Huntin’...” and
the encore consists of “I
Don’t Want This Night To
End” and “Country Girl,”
which Shomby calls “two
of the best to end with.”

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE
Peppermill’s Wheeler Walker. Jr. discusses his
most influential music:
1. Louvin Brothers’ Satan is Real: I love
harmonies and these are the best who’ve ever
done it. I was sucked in by the cover, and then I
realized the music was even better.
2. Dwight Yoakam’s “Lonesome Roads”: I
used to sing and strum guitar to this over and over
Wheeler until I sounded just like Dwight ... still not there yet.
Walker Jr.
3. Sturgill Simpson’s Metamodern Sounds
In Country Music: People in the press always talk about how
Sturgill introducing me to Dave Cobb is what got my career off the
ground. And that’s probably true. But this album probably helped
me more than the intro, because this is what got me excited about
country music again, after years of thinking it was dead and gone.
4. Waylon Jennings’ Honky Tonk Heroes: Two of my favorite artists of all time – Waylon Jennings and Billy Joe Shaver
– combined forces to make one of the greatest country records
of all time. It’s so bare bones, I’ll bet if this came out today,
they’d probably call it “indie rock.”
5. The Beatles (a.k.a. the White Album): You can listen to
this and hear pretty much every genre of music. It’s got rock,
hard rock, folk, country, classical ... and even experimental
music, like “Revolution 9” – which sucks but you forgive them
because it’s The Beatles.
• Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: I don’t think I
could name or recognize a single Justin Bieber song. I don’t
know if you could call him “highly regarded” but he’s a big
enough superstar that you’d think I would’ve heard something.
• “Important” music you just don’t get: Radiohead’s Kid
A. Everyone says it was the best album of the past decade.
Bores me to tears.
• An album you played incessantly: Right out of high
school I went through a huge Bowie phase. Probably listened to
his album Low non-stop for a year.
• Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen
to right now: Not really obscure to most people, but country
fans probably haven’t heard Anderson .Paak’s “Come Down”.
They should. Right now.
• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I never apologize for what I listen to. But I think people might be surprised I love
Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz album. Perfect pop tunes. That and Taylor
Swift’s 1989. I make fun of pop-country, but I love great pop.
Page 5
dredge make favorable
Luke Bryan and Karen Fairchild
impressions as well.
“Adam got rolling with
his cover of Gary Allan’s
‘Watching Airplanes’
about the middle of his
set and the audience
responded to him really
well after that,” Shomby
says. “Brett Eldredge has
headliner potential and
you could see it
that night.”
McKiddy loved the
personal touch. “Both
shared memories of
when they first moved to
town, [attending] shows
at Bridgestone or playing on lower Broadway and dreaming of
playing onstage at Bridgestone,” he says.
Shomby sums: “Luke’s shows are always a party and this was
no exception.”
The tour continues this weekend in Bristow, VA and Hartford, CT.

Meet RCA’s Dennis Reese
(continued from page 1)
And that’s how it happened. I hadn’t met Randy, but had heard
enough to know he’s great. Steve is one of the coolest dudes
out there in understanding the format, what it’s been through
and its growing pains. He knows how to take all the new data,
digest it and get it back out to our partners. Very smart guy who
has busted a lot of great records.
Why were you so enamored of Nashville?
I accomplished so much in Pop, but I had fallen in love with
country. My first step into it was 2004. The then-president of
Capitol wouldn’t work Keith Urban’s “You’ll Think Of Me” because
he was signed through Nashville, not L.A. They called me and I
thought, why the hell not? I’ll never forget seeing Keith at Madison
Square Garden and thinking, ‘This guy isn’t country, he’s a f-ing
rock god. Top five guitar player!’ I worked more songs with Keith
then got into Lady Antebellum, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Luke
Bryan. I would joke that if I got the shot, I’d go to Nashville because those guys have a better life. They’re not grinding through
New York, subways and shitty weather.
When this happened it was hard to deny. Also, the timing was
great in watching what Steve was doing with Maren Morris. When
I first heard “My Church,” I thought, “I want to be part of this.”
Similar to what we’re doing with Kane Brown. The superstars are
amazing and I’ve been so blessed to work with [top] artists, but
nothing felt better than driving around the country for five weeks
with an artist nobody knew named Katy Perry. You’re watching
something happen with every visit. You could see the programmers who were getting it and made sure to record the performance and get the liners done.
Coming over from a world that’s maybe a few
beats ahead in adopting new models, what perspective do you bring?
Streaming seems to be a new gatekeeper, but radio is more
important than ever because it solidifies a hit. It’s the stamp
of approval and the companion people still go to. Streaming
services don’t have that personal interaction and touch. As a
music company, our challenge is to break new music and artists.
The very simple reason is that Classic Rock doesn’t exist without
Album Rock, and that’s true across the board. If you’re not nurturing and growing new artists – labels, radio, streaming – what
are we really doing?

What can Country do to shore up its base?
I love when a jock gets on the air and talks about how excited
they are about a song or show they just saw instead of reading a
nine-second liner about nothing. They have a lot of power with
listeners. There’s a trust that comes from their audience, which is
why they get paid to do live commercial reads. That’s where the
power is.
Certainly your background speaks for itself, but how
is the familiarization with the format going?
I’ve made a commitment to do a lot of listening and not a
whole lot of talking. Many people I already know because they
came from the Pop side or are running both stations in the cluster.
I had people telling me it’s a whole different world, and I appreciate that. The artists work hard, and they care about their fans
and radio. This is so much easier than having an artist who is on
hip-hop time. Trashing hotel rooms, showing up late and ditching
the meet-and-greet isn’t rock cool. That’s just dumb. Nashville’s
got that right and it’s been paying off all day long. But I will never
badmouth what I was part of; those were life changing experiences and I wouldn’t be here without every chapter.
And the reception so far?
People have been so welcoming. Internally and externally.
I’m going to learn from them and can only hope I have some-
Page 9
thing they can benefit from. The music, the artistry, the boundaries that are being pushed – I love it. I told Randy, I don’t like the
easy road. The success is great, but it doesn’t keep you sharp.
I like sweating it out a bit, too, because it puts pressure on the
team to deliver.
For those who haven’t felt your presence yet, what
can radio expect from a Dennis Reese-led RCA?
We are going to be passionate about what we do, not to say
they haven’t been in the past. Their success has proven that. We’re
going to challenge radio, not in a negative way but in a respectful
way because it’s what our artists expect us to do. When they sign
to RCA they expect to get a certain level of work ethic, intensity, respect and don’t-take-no-for-an-answer attitude. If they didn’t want
that, they could put their music out independently.
I love all kinds of radio, all kinds of platforms. Wherever people can go find new music and artists, that’s where I want RCA to
be. Radio is at a great yet critical point. It’s still where people discover and fall in love with music. Though used differently, it’s still
very much a part of their life. And radio has the same responsibility
to listeners that we have to our artists in exceeding expectations.
We’re going to do that for our artists as well as our radio partners.
Reach Reese here.
