U-Pick Bounty Once upon a time, the backyard garden was the place to get the freshest, best tasting fruits and vegetables around. These days most us don’t have the time or inclination to do all that planning, digging, rock picking, planting, or weeding, even when the harvest holds the promise of making it all worthwhile. Thankfully, you can find locally grown, freshly harvested foods at many convenient locations, from roadside stands to farmers markets and even mainstream grocery stores. You can even skip all the preparatory work of gardening and jump right into the harvest by visiting one (or more) of the many Pick-Your-Own farms in the Finger Lakes region. Choosing to harvest some of your own food offers many benefits – you get the very freshest product possible, with the added bonus of being able to divert a few choice morsels from the picking basket into your mouth. When you pick fruit fresh off the vine, bush, plant or tree, you select it at its ripest. You handle it with care, taking it home to eat fresh, bake into a pie, crisp, cobbler or buckle, or preserve in some wonderful way for later enjoyment – jellies, jams, marmalades, compotes, or simply canned or frozen. The memory of summer sunshine and a pleasant visit to the country come back each time you sample what you’ve saved. In addition to getting a premium product, performing the harvest task yourself saves you money. Farmers save on harvesting expenses, and can pass that savings on to you; and, since you are buying direct from the producer, they get a bigger share of the food dollar. Visiting the farm offers the added benefit of being able to meet and speak with the grower and learn about the crop and production methods. In our region, you can begin picking strawberries and sweet cherries in June, continue the harvest in July with blueberries, raspberries, sour cherries, peaches and the first apples, add pears in August, plums and grapes in September - and you’ll keep finding some of these fruits right into October. If you freeze fruits, consider partially filling bags at the beginning of the season and then adding different fruits as the season progresses. Try one of these collections in a baked treat mentioned above and you’ll create something pleasing to the eye and palate. Although fruit is generally what most people envision when they consider U-Pick crops, flowers and a nice selection of vegetables are also available. A special delight to begin the season is asparagus in May. Next you’ll find beans, peas and herbs beginning in June, then cucumbers, tomatoes, shallots, leeks and summer squash ripening in July, followed by peppers and potatoes in August, and all but asparagus still available into September. Then, as a spectacular end to the season, pumpkins fill out and color up for picking in October. When you choose locally produced foods, you get fresher, and therefore more nutritious, foods. You also support the local economy as well as contribute directly to farm income, helping keep local farms economically viable.
