This issue highlights the wonderful work of
St Wilfrid’s Day Services. We’re working hard
with other community partners to encourage
patients to access the service as early as
possible so that they can benefit from the
full range of activities and support available.
Our Retail team has been very busy
over the last few months with two
brand new stores opening and a couple
of refurbishments which look fantastic!
Come along to one of the shops and
have a look for yourself.
The team is also busy planning this
year’s Vintage Affair on Friday 25th
August. This is a fabulous opportunity
to get kitted out for the Goodwood
Revival, with rails of period clothes,
jewellery and accessories.
We have a couple of dates for your
diary, do make a note so that you don’t
miss out. Our Make a Will fortnight is
back with limited appointments so
make sure you book up early, this will
run from 5th – 16th June. Also back by
popular demand is the Bubble Rush
which takes place at Chichester High
School on 2nd September – it’s sure to
be a fantastic day for the whole family!
Lastly, look out for the story on page 16
about Buzz, our new canine volunteer!
You can keep up to date with his latest
antics in the ‘Dog Blog’ featured on our
website.
Thank you all as always for your
continued support of St Wilfrid’s.
EDITOR
Visitor from afar
S
t Wilfrid’s recently welcomed
Henry Yim, a visitor from Hong
Kong, who worked as a Palliative Care
Social Worker at the Bradbury Hospice,
the first independent hospice in his
country. He was awarded a scholarship
in the UK to complete a Masters’ in
Public Health Policy & Ageing at King’s
College London.
Before coming to the UK for his studies,
Henry was already aware that the UK
ranked as the No1 provider of palliative
care across the world. After meeting
one of our Ambassadors, Kevin Harney,
Henry was intrigued to learn more
about the great work of St Wilfrid’s, so
came along to see us.
During his visit, Henry met with Alison
Moorey, CEO, who provided him with an
insight into the workings of the Hospice
and explained the individualised levels
of service that are provided. He also
met with a variety of staff who all
helped give him a great understanding
of the range of services we provide.
Henry also visited the DREAMBUILIDING
site in Bosham – he could see that
the task of fundraising is never ending
and just couldn’t happen without
the ongoing support of the local
community.

South Street
Chalcroft Outlet Re-fit
H
ave you visited
our brand new
furniture outlet
on the Chalcroft
Nurseries site, off
Chalcraft Lane in
Bognor Regis yet?
T
he South Street shop has had a
major re-fit: new lighting, flooring,
fixtures and fittings have really
brightened up the shop with a fresh
new look.
Manager, Billie Cawte, created the new
design ideas and layout and she’s been
delighted with the positive feedback
from customers. If you haven’t already,
please come in and have a look for
yourself!
The doors opened
on 27th January and
it is already proving
hugely popular. The
team of existing and
brand new staff has
received a really
positive reception
from both old and
new customers in the
local area.
This spacious outlet
opens 7 days a week
(Mon - Sat 9am-5pm,
Sunday 10am-4pm),
is easily accessible and has ample
customer parking.
It operates a collection and delivery
service for furniture and is able to
accept donations of smaller items. We
have two dedicated donation centres
in Chichester, one in Terminus Road
and the other in Summersdale, which
would be happy to receive any other
donated items.
Our new outlet at Chalcroft replaces
the old High Street Shop and also has
a brand new clearance area selling
Chidham
O
garments, DVDs, CDs, toys and bric-abrac. Most clearance items are £1, so
there will always be a bargain to be
found!
We hope that like many of our shops
and outlets, Chalcroft will also provide
a wonderful opportunity for people
in the local area to volunteer and to
make new friends whilst supporting
the important work St Wilfrid’s. If you
are interested in volunteering please
come in and have a chat with Andy
Mitchell, Outlet Manager, or contact
the team on 01243 837766.
ur Chidham shop opened in
October, and has been well
received in the local area. It stocks a
wide range of quality donated goods
including ladies, men’s and children’s
garments and accessories, bric-a-brac
and collectables, books, DVDs, CDs,
home furnishings and a selection of
small items of furniture.
East Wittering Re-fit
C
ustomers at the East Wittering
shop are also enjoying a
refreshed shopping experience. In
keeping with its location the shop’s
recent refurbishment has resulted
in a bright and airy beach theme,
including a beach hut changing
room! Michelle Dagwell, Shop
Manager, oversaw the design and
implementation of the improvement
works with the help of other staff
and volunteers. The shop continues
to stock good quality donated items
and is really well supported by the
local community – thank you!
The shop opens from Monday to
Saturday 9.30am to 4.30pm and is easily
accessed from the A259 with customer
parking. Again, they can only accept a
limited number of donated goods so
please take anything larger to one of
our donation centres who will be happy
to help.
The shop has already attracted a
number of volunteers from the local
community who are using their skills
to raise funds to support the Hospice
but we are still on the lookout for more.
Pop into your local shop for a chat or
go to our website for more details.

Our Care in Action
Our Care
in Action
St Wilfrid’s Day Centre is an essential part
of the Hospice. It offers support to patients
in learning to live well with their illness and manage
the issues they encounter.
There are always activities going on that are of
benefit to either our patients or their carers and
loved ones. It is a happy place to be and patients
can come and be themselves, together with others
who are in a similar situation.
Complementary
Therapies
T
hese can be a great help to patients
and their loved ones alike, improving
feelings of well-being, encouraging
relaxation and relieving anxiety.
The wide range of activities includes art classes,
exercise groups, complementary therapies and
relaxation sessions.
The nurses and volunteers are on hand to give a
warm and reassuring welcome to new visitors who
can sometimes find their first visit quite daunting.
We encourage everyone to just come along and
see what’s going on. In our experience, the earlier
that patients start using the Day Centre, the more
beneficial they will find it.

his complementary therapy is
similar to acupuncture but without
the use of needles. Based on energy
points used to treat physical and
emotional ailments - simple tapping
helps to ease the intensity of stressful
emotions whilst bringing positive
energy into the body.
ost of us have thoughts about
what we would like when it comes
to our future care. We offer a series of
group sessions over a four-week period
which examines this type of planning.
Patients and their loved ones can come
along to the first session to get an idea
of what it’s all about.

his popular six-week programme
provides practical strategies to help
manage the effects and symptoms
of breathlessness. The skills and
techniques that are taught allow
patients to take back control and be
more independent. The patients who
have attended this group found that
it has made a real difference to their
everyday lives and have nothing but
praise for it.
T
his is one of our more unusual
complementary therapies based on
38 plant and flower based essences,
each used to treat a different feeling.
After a consultation, a small dropper
bottle is prepared with a personalised

them to have a bit more control of their
symptoms.

“Issues that are difficult to
approach and discuss are best done
with help from professionals who
really understand ill health and

for carers and families. Sometimes
they find it’s nice just to come, have

Sessions
reative Arts is a fun and interactive
session run by art volunteers who
are sometimes joined by students from
Chichester University. Patients who
attend this group are surprised at how
many new skills they pick up and how
much they learn. There is a big social
element too and it’s a great way to meet
new friends and exchange ideas.

maximise their quality of life by
improving wellbeing and building
confidence. The group offers very gentle,
chair based exercises which suits patients
who may have limited mobility.
Learning to Live Well
O
ne of our newer offerings, this
twelve week course is split into
bite size topics which provide relevant
information and techniques to allow
patients to self-care and improve their
wellbeing.
Some of the topics covered are ‘Body
Beautiful’, ‘Flushed with Success’,
‘Don’t mention the F word (fall!)’ and
‘Getting out and about’. It’s also a
great opportunity for patients to share
problems, concerns or experiences in a
supportive and confidential environment
with others who may be going through
a similar situation.
A
lovely calming session that
consists of simple exercises to aid
breathing and manage anxiety. This
is a really peaceful time which leaves
people feeling refreshed and relaxed.
“I found the Day Centre really beneficial. I have been taught things I didn’t know
in a simple but very effective way. It has made a big difference to my mornings, by
learning a few simple techniques to aid with my breathing; it has also helped me
manage my pain and medication. I have gained peace of mind by attending the
activities and they have taken away the fear factor about a lot of things I didn’t
understand fully.
The Day Centre is extremely important to me and it has helped me to relax and
eliminate fear. I would wholeheartedly recommend it and encourage others to
take advantage of everything on offer as it all helps in one way or another.”

Education
‘Career in Care’
Summer School
St Wilfrid’s
is back
Following the great success from last year, St Wilfrid’s Hospice has
once again secured funding from Health Education England for a
Summer School. The course is for 16 – 19 year olds who are considering
a career in care. Whilst learning what is involved in the various roles,
the students will also be undertaking vocational qualifications.
T
his six day course includes five
days in the classroom and one
day shadowing St Wilfrid’s staff. The
shadowing helps students to gain
a broad understanding of the work
the team undertakes both at the
Hospice and in the local community.
The students get to meet health care
professionals, talk to patients and
carers and receive training from highly
qualified specialists.
Completion of the course will result
in three nationally recognised
qualifications in adult social care,
end of life care and employability:
skills which can lead towards an
apprenticeship, improve prospects of
studying for A levels or enhance any
future University application.
The feedback from last year’s students
was extremely positive. Participant
Lydia commented,
“The course was really thorough
– I learnt a lot. Until you are
in a hospice, you don’t know
what a wonderful place it is. This
experience is going to really help
me at college and has given me a
better understanding of what I
want to do.”
The course runs from 7th to 11th August
plus one date between 14th – 18th August.
There are 12 places available and the
closing date for applications is 18th
May 2017. Call the Education Centre on
01243 755830 or go to our website for
more details.

Could you help us by choosing to
‘Sponsor a Nurse’?
Sponsor a
St Wilfrid’s
More and more of you – our wonderful supporters
Nurse!
– are choosing to Sponsor a Nurse with a monthly
donation of your choice. Thank you!
It’s because of people like you that we are able to continue providing
our specialist care and support and make a difference to the lives of
terminally-ill, local people. Every donation truly does count and helps us
to raise the funds we need each year.
In every issue of our newsletter we will introduce you to our nursing
staff, giving you an insight into their work and showing how valued
Sponsor a Nurse donations are in helping them to support local people
at their time of need.
Today, we are pleased to introduce you
to Diana Giannotti who is one of the St
Wilfrid’s Day Centre nurses.
“17 years ago, after working at St
Wilfrid’s for eight and a half years, I
decided I wanted to experience other
areas of nursing. This led me to ten
years of community nursing, some
years of practice nursing and time
working at Bognor Regis Memorial
Hospital. However I realised that
end-of-life care really was my niche
and so I applied to come back to St
Wilfrid’s. This was four years ago and
I have never looked back!”
Please tell us about
your role at St Wilfrid’s?
I am part of our Day Centre team and
we welcome patients every Tuesday,
Wednesday and Friday.
We support patients with the aim
of helping them learn to live well
with their illness and manage the
issues they encounter. This can be
anything from a lack of appetite,
breathlessness, skin care to pain
control and mobility.
Patients are encouraged to relax in
the Day Centre surroundings and by
attending they’re also giving their
carer a break too. They can choose
what they want to do – it’s their day
and we help to make it!
Some people like to simply sit
with a hot drink and chat or they
can get involved in the range of
activities that we have on offer. For
example, today we have a speaker
coming from the Tangmere Aviation
Museum and we offer a range of
activities, such as group classes,
Complementary Therapies and art
therapy; these activities serve to be
both entertaining and a distraction
from their illness.
What do you enjoy
the most?
It’s all about making a difference
to the patients and giving them the
confidence to try new things in a
safe environment. Sometimes coming
here gives patients a new lease of
life – people with disfiguring cancers
can be worried about going out of
the house; one patient said recently
that it felt like a holiday, which is very
touching and makes me feel proud to
be making such a difference.
How would you describe
St Wilfrid’s to a new
patient, or their loved
ones?
It’s a happy place to be and where you
can be yourself, with people in a similar
situation. It’s a supportive environment
where you won’t be judged and it’s not
a place to be scared of.
Often people mistake a hospice as
being about ‘doom and gloom’, but
St Wilfrid’s is bright and cheerful.
When new patients come in I say
‘you’ve done the hardest part and that’s
coming through the door’ and I’ve
never heard anyone say that they’ve
regretted doing so! We strive to make
a difficult time as easy as possible for
both patients and their loved ones.

30 years of
fantastic support
W
e are always incredibly
thankful to the kind
supporters who choose to leave
a gift to the Hospice in their Will.
These gifts come in all sizes - large
and small - but each and every
one makes such a difference to the
income we receive.
Looking back over the last 30 years,
we have been fortunate to receive
over £30million through gifts left
to us in this way! These funds have
made a vital contribution to funding
our services which now cost over
£7 million a year. Every
single gift has helped us
to continue supporting
local people.
Your support may help a patient
receive care within their own home
from our Community Nursing
Teams, stay on our Inpatient
Ward, attend our Day Centre or
allow a loved one to receive the
bereavement support that they
need. If you would like to receive a
copy of our guide to Wills and how
to remember St Wilfrid’s, please
call Michelle Sidney, Individuals
Fundraising Manager, on 01243
755837, visit stwh.co.uk/legacy or
email: [email protected]
Once you have provided
for your loved ones in
your Will, we hope you
might consider leaving
a gift to St Wilfrid’s.
Will you be a winner?
I
t’s our 30th Anniversary year and to celebrate such a significant
event we’ve got some fantastic prizes for our 2017 summer raffle!

St Wilfrid s Hospice |
Volunteering
Pleased to meet...
Richard Wood and Buzz
Richard Wood has been involved with St Wilfrid’s Hospice since
before its launch back in 1985 when he helped fundraise for
the initial building.
M
ore recently when Richard’s wife,
Jacky, was a patient of ours he
suddenly realised the scale of our care
and support involved. His perception of
the Hospice completely changed.
is good for
your health!
V
olunteering can be a fulfilling
and rewarding use of your spare
time, but did you know it can also be
beneficial to your health?
Sandra March moved to Rose Green
three years ago when she was in
very poor health. Sandra had had
two operations on her knees which,
because of complications, resulted in
her becoming paralysed. She could not
feed or wash herself and literally had
to have everything done for her. Being
a very strong and independent woman,
Sandra found this unbearable and it
was a very hard time in her life.
Whilst Jacky was with us Richard brought
in Buzz, their 4 year old Cockapoo, every
day for three weeks. He would come
and see Jacky but also spend time with
the other patients. Buzz really enjoyed
the attention and fuss he was given and
Richard saw what a benefit it was to the
patients.
Since coming to the Hospice, Buzz has
been assessed and certified by Sussex
Caring Pets to make sure he had the
right sort of temperament to become a
therapy dog, offering stimulation and
comfort to those in need - he passed
with flying colours!
Volunteering
Richard and Buzz hope to come into the
Hospice on a regular basis to see patients
both on the Inpatient Ward and in the Day
Centre. We are very pleased to have them
volunteer with us and really appreciate the
difference it makes to our patients.
Why is it good
to volunteer?
W
e all know that volunteering is a good thing and maybe it has been
something that you have been thinking about doing? Giving some of
your spare time to St Wilfrid’s Hospice really does make a difference to local
people living with a terminal illness.
St Wilfrid’s Hospice has over 500 volunteers who support the work of the
Hospice and its staff. They enable us to provide the best possible service to the
patients and their families. The volunteers give their time in the Hospice, in our
charity shops, in the community and at fundraising events.
It doesn’t matter how much time you’re able to give or what interest or skills
you have, any amount of help is valuable. We are always looking to increase the
number of volunteers we have and we are looking for more people to volunteer
in our furniture outlets, shops and donation centres.
There are many benefits to volunteering such as making a valuable
contribution to your local community and being part of a friendly team. Our
volunteers also tell us they get a great sense of satisfaction by helping others.
St Wilfrid’s Hospice Volunteers gained the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
in 2012 – this is the highest award given to volunteer groups in the UK. We
provide training and support for the full range of volunteer roles that we have.
To find out more information about volunteering either in one of our shops or
at the hospice itself, please go to stwh.co.uk/volunteering
We really couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers – why not join us and
become part of our team?
After a corrective operation Sandra
started the very long road to recovery.
When she moved here, Sandra visited
a couple of our shops to buy furniture
for her new home. Having worked as
a volunteer in the past she spoke to
Kelly, one of our staff. She explained
that she’d love to volunteer but thought
her disability would stop her. But Kelly
thought differently and that’s where
Sandra’s journey with St Wilfrid’s
Hospice began. Sandra has been
volunteering at our Terminus Road
outlet for around three years now and
has gone from strength to strength
both physically and emotionally.
When asked what Sandra would say to
anyone who would like to volunteer but
has doubts she said “There is always
something that can be done and you
should just go for it. It’s the best thing
that has happened to me and I wish I
could spend more time volunteering”.

that you could benefit from please go

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR AMAZING DREAMBUILDERS
WHO HELPED MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
DREAM DINNER
At the
Old reenhouse
Local chef, restaurateur and
caterer, Nik Westacott, is a
keen fundraiser and has raised
money for several local causes.
This year he has chosen to
support DREAMBUILDING and
wasted no time in kicking off
his fundraising efforts with a
‘Dream Dinner’ or in this case
‘lunch’, at his restaurant, The
Old Greenhouse.
Want to raise money but stuck for what to do.
Why not take inspiration from Frank and Vicky
Griffin, who really have done all sorts!
On Friday 27 th January, guests were offered three courses with
coffee and asked to donate what would have been their total
spend, to DREAMBUILDING. The diners’ generosity more than
equalled Nik’s enthusiasm and willingness to donate his time
and ingredients - raising a superb £650!
Could you host a ‘Dream Dinner’? It can be as simple or lavish
as you like. See our website for more info.

Dream
Challenge
Last year we cared for Vicky Griffin’s mother,
Rosemary Collins. Grateful for the care and
support they all received, Vicky and her husband
Frank have determined to raise funds for our
new hospice as a way of saying thank you. Since
their fundraising efforts began in November,
they have found all manner of ways to raise
money, including collections at Frank’s Ukulele
Gigs, their regular Bridge Group, U3A, and more
recently a Burns Night at the Elmer Hotel. Frank
has even sold his homemade Chelsea buns
and Vicky held an exhibition of her mother’s
art work. Collectively, these events have raised
almost £600!

a
difference…
We support a community of over
106,000 households. If every household
gave just 50p, this could raise £53,000
and cover the cost of building one of 18
bedrooms at our new Hospice. As they
say, every little bit really does add up
and could make a BIG difference to our
DREAMBUILDING. Could you become a
DREAMBUILDER and collect your own
small change in one of our handy
fold-up collection cubes (pictured), or
perhaps you know of a local business
which may be happy to have one of
our larger collection pots?

PROJECT UPDATE
What have we been doing
since the site was cleared
last year?
Our contractors, Kier Construction
Southern, have been working
closely with our staff to make
sure the room layouts, fittings and
finishes are exactly as we want
them to be. These meetings also
proved very useful in enabling us
to assess the current processes we
use and how the new building will
enable us to be more effective.
Kier have constructed and sent
out tender packages to companies
bidding for various areas of the
building work. This includes
anything from the metal frame,
to roofing, stairs and landscaping.
We are constantly reviewing costs
and as we finalise the details of
our design, we’ve been scrutinising
the costs to ensure the building is
delivered within budget.
The team at Kier have also
conducted a ‘legacy audit’;
compiling a list of every single
piece of equipment at the current
Hospice, assessing its longevity and
recommending which items can be
transferred to our new building. This
includes everything from beds to
filing cabinets.
As a result of all of this work, further
refinement has been made to our
floor plans, materials used and
equipment to be purchased.
