The design is based upon loads and pressures derived from either the German DIN 1055 1987 or Eurocode 1 part 4 with structural calculations based on BS 5950 part 5 or Eurocode 3. Standard ranges from 3m diameter 15 tonnes storage to 10m diameter 1,700 tonnes, all hoppers are designed for high cyclic loading, i.e. high usage of product in and out and at high tonnage rates. The 45 and 60 degree hoppers are standard (other hopper angles upon request). Silo roof panels, wall sheets and stiffening struts (up to 3mm thick) are sheared and formed from pre-galvanised steel sheets, with a minimum of G600 galvanising. Stiffening struts (thicker than 3mm) are sheared and formed from black steel and hot-dip galvanised to finish after manufacture, as too is the supporting entablature steelwork. HOPPER BOTTOM SILOS 3 All of Bentall Rowlands’ silo ranges are designed, detailed, programmed and manufactured at one site. One benefit of this is that we can and often do manufacture non-standard silos and hoppers. So if your needs are different from those in the standard ranges please do not hesitate to ask. Hopper silos can provide temporary wet grain storage as part of a grain drying plant and other “buffer bin” applications in silo plants. Storage of other free flowing granulated products, wood pellets and feed pellets in relevant industrial plants. Medium term grain storage where fast discharge of large batches of grain are required (sea and river ports, breweries, malting, mills). GENERAL PARAMETERS Capacity: Diameter: Overall height: Snow load: Wind load: Cylinder height: up to 2,165m³ up to 10m up to 33.81m 0.75 kN/m² (To suit customer requirements) 50m/sec up to 24.88m All silo parts are made from certified pre or hot-dip galvanised steel. High specification G600 galvanising provides outstanding corrosion resistance. Uses: agricultural, food complexes, sea and river ports, breweries, bio-fuel etc. Optimal solution for quick unloads of large amounts of any granular loose free flowing materials: cereal crop, granular polymers, wooden granular fuel, granular fodder etc. Subject to review by our in-house engineering team. SILO & BULK STORAGE PRODUCTS 4 SILO CONSTRUCTION Silo Wall Assembled from individual corrugated steel sheets with vertical stiffeners, the effective height of each ring of sheets is 1.185m. Sheet thickness varies according to the load experienced in different parts of the silo. Bentall Rowlands design the wall make-up using sheets from 1mm thick, whilst the bottom ring can be up to 5mm thick. All Bentall Rowlands’ silo sheets are shallow corrugated to improve product flow inside the silo. Each silo cylinder generally has two rows of vertical external stiffeners per wall sheet. Taller silo walls have three rows of stiffeners per wall sheet. Silo Roof Conical roof with 30° slope, assembled from individual trapezoidal panels. Bentall Rowlands have self-supporting roofs on standard silos up to 9m in diameter, for larger diameter silos we offer a rafter supported roofs. Any electrical equipment used in Bentall Rowlands’ silos can be supplied for use in explosive atmospheres according to ATEX directives. Silo roofs can be fitted with vents, temperature cable brackets, inspection hatches and high-level indicators. The roofs fully protect the stored product from the weather and vermin. All silos designed by Bentall Rowlands can, in most cases, bear the full load of the catwalks with even the heaviest handling equipment on top of them negating the necessity for catwalk-to-ground supports. This can offer significant savings compared to our competitors. Hopper Bottom The standard Bentall Rowlands hopper bottom silos have a 45° cone. On some diameters other discharge cones are available i.e. 50° or 60° cone as an option subject to review by our engineering department. Bentall Rowlands hopper silos have a smooth wallto-hopper transition with no steps or flanges and the cone is assembled with special dome-headed bolts to offer the cleanest possible product discharge from the silo. Silo Doors An optional bolted door can be fitted in the hopper cone which allows safe and easy access. HOPPER BOTTOM SILOS 5 Fixings Bentall Rowlands’ silos are assembled using spun galvanised fixings. This type of coating provides high corrosion resistance while preserving the nominal dimensions of the threads, making for easier silo assembly. Neoprene backed washers protect the zinc coating of the sheets during assembly and seal the bolt connections. Support Steelwork Bentall Rowlands’ industrial grade hopper bottom silos are supported on a rolled ring beam, rather than on extensions of the wall stiffeners as offered by some of our competitors. The entire support structure and the ring beam are hot-dip galvanised. A double ring beam support structure is fitted to the larger diameter hopper bottom silos to ensure stability of the cone. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT Ventilation System All stored crops respire in storage and therefore a rise in temperature within the silo is inevitable. Low volume aeration systems maintain the stored crop at temperatures close to that of the ambient air, so preventing the build-up of heat which would allow insect reproduction activity to increase, moulds to grow and so damage the stored crop. The design of ventilation systems are specific to each silo size and the crop stored in the silo. Bentall Rowlands specify the correct ventilation channels, and fans together with the necessary roof vents to ensure the correct airflow and distribution throughout the stored crop. Ventilation system consists of: • • • • Centrifugal or Axial fans with inlet adapters Roof vents Roof fans (optional) Aeration laterals fixed inside the hopper bottom * Lateral and fan sizes calculated to each contract requirements Entablatures SILO & BULK STORAGE PRODUCTS 6 Bentall Rowlands hoppers can be used in conjunction with independent or integrated support structures allowing for load out operations. Flat Bottom Silos Flat bottom silos are all designed, detailed, programmed and manufactured by Bentall Rowlands. The design is based upon loads and pressures derived from either the German DIN 1055 1987 or Eurocode 1 part 4 with structural calculations based on BS 5950 part 5 or Eurocode 3. Standard ranges from 3m diameter 15 tonnes to 32m diameter 13,725 tonnes of wheat, all silos are designed for high cyclic loading, i.e. high usage of product in and out and at high tonnage rates. Silo roof panels, wall sheets and stiffening struts (up to 3mm thick) are sheared and formed from pre-galvanised steel sheet, with a minimum of G600 galvanising. Stiffening struts (thicker than 3mm) are sheared and formed from black steel and finished hot-dip galvanised after manufacture. FLAT BOTTOM SILOS 7 All of Bentall Rowlands’ silo ranges are designed, detailed, programmed and manufactured at one site. One benefit of this is we can and often do manufacture non-standard silos. So if your needs are different from those in the standard range please do not hesitate to ask. Key features of our storage silos: • Strong true conical roof for maximum load bearing capacity • Silo cylinder with M10 bolts to maintain strength without regular re-tensioning • Silo stiffeners with strong compression joints for long term stability • Silo sidewall sheets utilise a shallow corrugation to minimise ‘hang up’ of material on walls and provide a cleaner, safer silo. A Bentall Rowlands silo can provide short and long term storage of grain, oil seeds and other granulated free flowing materials, including wood pellets, with mechanised loading/ unloading options and full range of grain management systems to provide safe storage. Maximum term of storage depends on the parameters of the product: moisture content, impurities and temperature. Choose a Bentall Rowlands silo for: • Safe storage for your product(s) in all climates • Low maintenance even after 25 years of use • Prompt delivery and easy installation GENERAL PARAMETERS Usable capacity: up to 17,484m³ Diameter: from 3m to 32m Cylinder height: up to 28.44m Snow load: 0.75 kN/m² to suit customer requirements Wind load: 50 m/sec GENERAL FEATURES All silo parts are made of high quality pre-galvanised and hotdip galvanised steel. High specification galvanising provides outstanding corrosion resistance. SILO & BULK STORAGE PRODUCTS 8 SILO CONSTRUCTION Silo Wall Assembled from individual corrugated steel sheets with vertical stiffeners. The effective height of each ring of sheets is 1.185m. On a like-for-like basis this reduces the total number of sidewall sheets to give the required capacity thus reducing the erection time. Sheet thickness varies according to the load experienced in different parts of the silo. Bentall Rowlands design the wall make up using sheets from 1mm thick, whilst the bottom ring can be up to 5mm thick. All Bentall Rowlands silo sheets are shallow corrugated to improve product flow inside the silo. The Bentall Rowlands silo sidewall sheets are fastened together utilising a double row bolt pattern on vertical seams which reduces the total amount of bolts and therefore speeds up assembly. Each silo cylinder generally has two rows of vertical external stiffeners per wall sheet. Taller silo walls have three rows of stiffeners per wall sheet. The Bentall Rowlands stiffeners are joined by using a horizontal plate to transfer the axial loading stiffener to stiffener guaranteeing even load distribution. This design does not rely on edge to edge contact or bolt shear to transfer loads. The Bentall Rowlands stiffener splice is designed to allow the stiffener to carry a greater vertical load than other designs. Therefore in most cases no catwalk to ground supports are needed for the structure above silos which can offer significant savings compared to our competitors. Silo Roof Roofs are generally produced with a 30° slope to compliment the angle of the products. This will optimise the packing density of the silo. Bentall Rowlands has self-supporting roofs on standard silos up to 9m in diameter (category 1). For category 2 silos we offer galvanised rafter supported roofs from 6m to 32m diameter silos and upon request can include pressure relief panels. Silo roofs can be fitted with vents, temperature cable brackets, inspection hatches and high-level indicators. The roofs fully protect the stored product from the weather and vermin. FLAT BOTTOM SILOS 9 Silo Doors Weatherproof access doors are supplied with all outdoor silos and can be fitted in practically any silo ring to suit the plant design and are available with ladders and platforms affording safe and easy access. Bentall Rowlands can also offer a scaffold access door as an option to allow a tower scaffold to be taken into the silo for annual cleaning for assured crop applications. Fixings Bentall Rowlands’ silos are assembled with spun galvanised grade 8.8 hardware. This type of coating provides high corrosion resistance. The sidewall sheets are fastened together utilising a double row bolt pattern on vertical seams, this reduces the total amount of bolts required which in turn speeds up assembly. Neoprene backed washers protect the zinc coating of the sheets to provide a watertight joint and protect the contents. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT Ventilation System The Low-volume ventilation systems prevent moisture condensation and formation of fungi inside the silo and allows the product to gradually cool down to its optimal temperature to stop any insect and mite activity. The ventilation system design for each silo model is based on the silo diameter, height and back pressure for various products being stored in the silo. Ventilation system consists of: • • • • Centrifugal or axial fans with inlet adaptors Roof vents Roof fans (optional) Aeration systems are designed to accommodate a range of air flows in a variety of crops. • Ventilation channel layout adaptable for different discharge systems (screw conveyor / chain conveyor in silo base / chain conveyor in a tunnel) • Perforated covers allow storage and ventilation of small grains. SILO & BULK STORAGE PRODUCTS 10 Temperature Monitoring Automatic digital temperature monitoring system consists of temperature cables suspended from the silo roof, junction boxes and computer software. The main features of the temperature monitoring systems supplied by Bentall Rowlands are: • Accurate digital sensors that do not require periodic re-calibration • Polymer cable coating for low friction between the product and the cable reduces the load on the silo roof • Cable breaking strength up to 10 tonnes • Sensor interval 2m instead of usual 3m, for more accurate measurements • The information from the temperature cables is sent to the computer in the operator’s room. The system is supplied with user friendly software with extensive statistical functions, which can also be remote controlled via the internet. • The information from the temperature cables can also be read on an optional handheld monitor Ladders and Platforms Bolted construction with safety hoops and intermediate rest platforms according to relevant international standards. Available with non-slip treads as an option where required. Eaves platform with drop ladder from catwalk, for access to eaves hatch. Available with non-slip ladder treads and mesh as an option where required. Catwalks Modular catwalks are available in widths from 1,200mm to 2,000mm wide in 200mm increments to suit a range of conveyor systems and access to the silo. The mesh has been strategically placed to avoid normal trip hazards and improve personal safety. Extension platforms Used to locally widen the catwalk to improve access for maintenance, drive sections, conveyor outlet slides and feed conveyors. FLAT BOTTOM SILOS 11 Smoothwall Silos ‘Aylsham’ Smoothwall Round Silos The Aylsham smoothwall round silos form part of a fully integrated system designed to store grain, pellets, soya, dust/by-products and other difficult to flow product types. Ranging in size from 3 metre to 9 metre diameter in 1 metre increments, with wall heights up to 15 metres. The Aylsham range of silos can be offered with either a steel full floor or hopper cone assembly. The silo sidewall and full floor or cone utilises the same galvanised steel as our corrugated range of silos. The galvanised covering is to G600 giving a total coating of 600 grams per square metre. The non-corrugated sidewall sheets are fastened using dome headed grade 8.8 spun-galvanised fixings. This ensures that the inside of the silo is as smooth as possible to minimise product hang up. SMOOTHWALL SILOS 12 The cones come in two designs, 45 degree & 60 degree and consist of G600 curved cone panels and fixed with dome headed bolts. The outlet flange size is dependent upon product flow rates and characteristics. The clearance under the outlet may vary according to the recovery equipment under the silo. For silos being discharged by a rotating recovery machine we offer a supported full floor for the Aylsham silo. The full floor is produced from galvanised steel with butt joints and dome headed fixings. The silo and floor is then supported by structural steel which is hot-dip galvanised to ensure a long working life. Feed Hoppers Bentall Rowlands ‘APACHE’ feed hopper The Apache feed hopper comes in a range of sizes, 2m to 4m silo diameter and from 0.5 ring to 4 rings in height. This range of silo is designed for the storage of granular feed and the capacities range from 2 tonnes to 50 tonnes. The silo sidewall and cone utilises the same galvanised steel as our industrial range of hopper bottom silos. G600 galvanised steel, shallow corrugated sidewall sheets, grade 8.8 spun galvanised fixings and dome headed bolts in the cone are just some of the standard features which ensure our range of silos will pass the test of time. Bentall Rowlands offers a wide range of optional equipment including: filling and exhaust pipes, auger discharge box, manual hand slide, rack & pinion gates with hand wheels or chain wheels, side access ladders, roof ladders, 15 or 30 degree roofs and 45 or 60 degree cones. The 4 metre diameter Apache can also be supplied with a splayed leg arrangement allowing it to give a 4.5 metre tall by 3.0 metre wide drive through area for load out applications. A viewing platform with access ladder can be supplied with an extended control rod rack & pinion gate for easy operation. All designed, drawn, programmed and manufactured at one location which allows Bentall Rowlands to cope with special requirements if the customer so desires. FEED HOPPERS 13 Catwalks and Platforms Bentall Rowlands manufactures, in-house, a complete range of catwalks, ladders and platforms to suit new or existing installations. CATWALKS & PLATFORMS 14 Bentall Rowlands’ standard range of catwalks are available in widths from 1,200mm to 2,000mm wide in 200mm increments. They utilise a galvanised double or triple stringer design depending on the conveyor loads and free-span required. The double stringer design allows for the complete internal area to be decked using hot-dip galvanised flowforge. This is an added safety feature ensuring free and safe passage for site operators. The handrail posts are hot-dip galvanised angle sections, bolted both vertically and horizontally to give a reassuringly sturdy support. Double or triple runs of galvanised tubing make up the handrail system. These tubes can also double up as air lines when using pneumatic equipment. With some project layouts and equipment it may be necessary to block the open area of a catwalk. We can assist with this problem. One added feature of our catwalk design is that we can supply side extension platforms to ensure that the operator always has clear and safe passage. GANTRIES Long free-spans, multiple conveyor systems or supporting high capacity handling equipment is not a problem with the Bentall Rowlands range of gantries. Our design team have a number of tried and tested designs to call upon. All are produced from black steel which is then hot-dip galvanised to ensure a long working life. CONVEYOR SUPPORTS Bentall Rowlands can also supply both catwalks and gantries with optional intermediate conveyor supports. These supports are fully galvanised and can be installed allowing the conveyor to run either horizontally or inclined. They bolt directly to the vertical handrail post and to the bottom cross channels giving a very strong support for any size of conveyor. CATWALK SUPPORTS The Bentall Rowlands silos, both flat and hopper bottom, are designed in such a way that the catwalks can be supported by a combination of sidewall brackets and peak supports. Both of these allow the loads imposed from conveying equipment, personnel, snow loads etc to be transferred either directly, or via the roof structure, to the vertical stiffeners which in turn transfer the load to ground level. This eliminates the need of costly independent support structures. On the larger range of silos we incorporate a back-brace system to enhance the bearing capacity of the catwalk.
