ROOT NEWSLETTER Soap Box Derby On May 14th, 2016 A.I Root middle school participated in the soap box derby gravity challenge in Akron Ohio at derby downs. This was the fifth year that we participated with 8 students going from A.I. Root. The students began preparation for the race at the beginning of January, taking apart the cars from previous years and rebuilding them, which teaches students how a car works. The students learn teamwork and problem solving skills as well. At the actual event our school entered 4 cars. All 4 cars made it passed the first round of racing and one of our cars made it to the final 8 cars before being eliminated. It was a great day where students worked together even having a break issue in which they banded together and solved the issue to be able to continue in the race. Middle School Mock Trial The Middle School Mock Trial Showcase May 19 was a success! Twelve Root students and nine Claggett students faced others from Black River and Wadsworth to try the case of The State of Oklahoma vs. Cade based on The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Each team got to try the case twice, competing against a different team each time. While no ruling was made by the presiding magistrate a great deal of feedback was provided to our students. In each of the four rooms, a best attorney and best witness was chosen for each round. Here is the list of those Root students recognized for their efforts: Round 1Sveta Post-best witness as Pony for never wavering on her testimony Round 2Andy Kancler-best witness as Randy for knowing his facts Andrew Altiere-best attorney for taking small bites from his witness and eating the whole fish!!
