Root Bike To School Challenge 2016
Root celebrated their 5th
year of the Bike To School
Challenge. Students are
encouraged to ride to and
from school during the 2
week chalenge. Throughout the
10 days, students received some daily giveaways that are donated by
local businesses. Students are learning and
practicing the Leader In
Me habits by participating
in this program.
Students who rode all 10
days were eligible to win a
Cedar Point season pass
and a free pizza a week
for 5 months from Courthouse Pizza. Two eighth
graders won those prizes.
Root students took 943
bike rides and rode 3,866
miles round trip. Riders
also burned 104,382
calories from riding. The
calories burned is equivalent to 143 cans of CocaCola. In addition, stu-
dents saved our environment 4,252 pounds of
CO2 emissions. Students
rode to school despite
cooler and rainy mornings.
Students rode May 2nd13th. On the last day,
May 13th, Root students
and staff met at Greenwood Park and formed a
bike train riding in to
school. That was also our
highest day of riders at
115.
Our assembly was May
16th with a special guest
speaker, Mayor Dennis
Hanwell. Century Cycles
Manager, Mike Petcher
also joined us for our
celebration. Twenty six
students won prizes that
day. Our Grand Prize
winner was a 7th grader,
Josh Kolasinski.
Root hosted a special
lunch on May 18th for 11
student riders. Three
students from Blake, four
students from Claggett
and three students from
Root had lunch with the
Browns mascot,
Chomps. A good time was
had by all. Special thank
you to Officer roland for
helping set up this luncheon.

Soap Box Derby
On May 14th, 2016 A.I Root
middle school participated in
the soap box derby gravity
challenge in Akron Ohio at
derby downs. This was the
fifth year that we participated with 8 students going from A.I. Root.
The students began preparation for the race at the beginning of January, taking apart
the cars from previous years
and rebuilding them, which
teaches students how a car
works. The students learn
teamwork and problem solving skills as well.
At the actual event our
school entered 4 cars. All 4
cars made it passed the first
round of racing and one of
our cars made it to the
final 8 cars before being
eliminated. It was a great
day where students worked
together even having a
break issue in which they
banded together and
solved the issue to be able
to continue in the race.
Middle School Mock Trial
The Middle School Mock Trial Showcase May 19 was a success! Twelve
Root students and nine Claggett students faced others from Black River
and Wadsworth to try the case of The
State of Oklahoma vs. Cade based
on The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Each
team got to try the case twice, competing against a different team each
time. While no ruling was made by the
presiding magistrate a great deal of
feedback was provided to our students.
In each of the four rooms, a best attorney and best witness was chosen for
each round.
Here is the list of those Root students
recognized for their efforts:
Round 1Sveta Post-best witness as Pony for
never wavering on her testimony
Round 2Andy Kancler-best witness as Randy
for knowing his facts
Andrew Altiere-best attorney for taking
small bites from his witness and eating the whole fish!!
Melanie Cora-best witness as Pony for
being so believable in her role
El Hadji Diop was presented with a
best bailiff award!!
