In 1894, a conflict arose between labor unions and the railroads that would later be known as the Pullman Strike. The
strike involved 3,000 employees who were voicing their concern over a reduction of wages.
The influence of the strike grew to the point that 250,000
workers in 27 states went on strike. Because of it, all railway
traffic west of Chicago came to a halt.
Eventually, President Grover Cleveland called in 12,000 U.S.
Army Troops and U.S. Marshals to end the strike. The intensity of the strike grew and 13 workers were killed, while 57
others were wounded. In total, $340,000 worth of property
was damaged (which is the equivalent of over $8 million in
today’s economy).

In an effort to make peace, President Cleveland rushed legislation through Congress to recognize a national holiday to
celebrate the strength and spirit of trade and labor organizations. Six days after the Pullman Strike ended, “Labor Day”
became a national holiday.

Few realize today that a day that we normally celebrate with
leisure and cookouts is rooted in conflict and strife.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that “we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1). It’s easy
for us to forget the peace with have with God came to us at a
cost. Jesus defeated sin and death for us so that we might
have life.

that Jesus has secured for us. Thank God for sending His
Son to die in our place. Seek to glorify Him in all you say and
do!
