The strike involved 3,000 employees who were voicing their concern over a reduction of wages. The influence of the strike grew to the point that 250,000 workers in 27 states went on strike. Because of it, all railway traffic west of Chicago came to a halt. Eventually, President Grover Cleveland called in 12,000 U.S. Army Troops and U.S. Marshals to end the strike. The intensity of the strike grew and 13 workers were killed, while 57 others were wounded. In total, $340,000 worth of property was damaged (which is the equivalent of over $8 million in today’s economy). Few realize today that a day that we normally celebrate with leisure and cookouts is rooted in conflict and strife. The Apostle Paul reminds us that “we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1). It’s easy for us to forget the peace with have with God came to us at a cost. Jesus defeated sin and death for us so that we might have life.
