What is the Compass Card?
The Compass Card in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex aims to make leisure
more welcoming and more affordable for 0 to 25 year olds with special
educational needs or disabilities. Funded by Brighton & Hove City Council and
West Sussex County Council and delivered by the Brighton-based charity,
Amaze, the card was launched in Brighton and Hove in 2003 and in West Sussex
in April 2016. The card in Brighton and Hove is recognised nationally as a model
of best practice.
Why should we become a Compass Card Partner?





More people through the door. A Compass Card offer won’t just
attract children and young people with additional needs. It will pull in their
friends and families and others too.
Positive publicity. Amaze has direct access to thousands of families of
disabled children and young people across Brighton and Hove and West
Sussex through the Compass database (aka ‘The Compass’). We’ll use
cutting edge technology and traditional publicity to spread the word about
your offer.
Improved social inclusion. There’s increasing pressure on leisure
providers to include and welcome disabled children and young people.
Joining the Compass Card is a significant step towards social inclusion.
Simplicity. There’s nothing worse (for parent carers, disabled children
and young people, or for your own staff) than when there’s uncertainty over
whether a child or young person has a disability and is eligible for a
concessionary rate. The Compass Card makes things quick and simple.
A trusted friend. We hope Amaze will become a trusted friend to your
organisation, offering disability information and advice when you need it.
What sort of offer or special deal could we provide?
That depends what works for you. We want offers that work for your organisation,
as well as for the families we work with. These are some of the options:


An ongoing offer. A deal that applies whenever the Compass Card is
presented.
Last minute or time-limited deals. These flexible offers are really
useful when you have a quiet period, or when tickets for an event or
performance are under-selling.

One-off deals. If you want to promote your organisation at a particular
point in time to increase your visibility, a one-off deal could be the answer.
What are the benefits for Compass Card families?
More affordable leisure is a significant benefit - but that’s just the beginning. In
Brighton and Hove, 99% of families say the Compass Card makes leisure more
affordable; 80% say venues are more welcoming; 98% say they feel more
confident going out as a family; 83% say the Compass Card has improved their
quality of life; and 71% say it’s improved general health and wellbeing. We
expect Compass Card West Sussex to have a similar impact
Who’s eligible for a Compass Card?
The Compass Card is for 0 to 25 year olds with special educational needs or
disabilities that have a big effect on daily living. They will also be living or going
to school in Brighton and Hove or West Sussex or being ‘looked after’ by Social
Services in these local authority areas. Cards have a unique number and
expiry date and are usually issued for two years.
How many Compass Card holders are there?
There are currently almost 2000 card holders in Brighton and Hove and over
1100 Compass Card holders in West Sussex.
What happens if we agree a Compass Card offer?



Amaze will provide you with copy that explains your offer and how it will
work. We’ll ask you to agree the copy and this will form the basis of
publicity about your offer.
Amaze will agree a ‘go live’ date with you and will publicise your offer as
soon as it goes live.
Amaze will provide you with a ‘Staff Briefing Sheet’ which you can use to
inform staff and pin up at pay points. The sheet will provide a short
explanation of your offer; images of Compass Card Brighton and
Hove and Compass Card West Sussex; and Amaze contact information.
