RESPIRATION } Food gives you energy once the food is broken up into its molecules and those molecules are broken apart in your cells! - } During cellular respiration, cells break down the sugars that were in the food, and RELEASE the energy they contained There is energy stored in sugar molecules in the bonds between the different atoms When the bonds are broken, energy is released } The respiration equation: C6H12O6 + O2 SUGAR OXYGEN ENERGY + CO2 + H20 CARBON DIOXIDE WATER } Where does respiration take place in the cell??? In the MITOCHONDRIA!!!! The powerhouse of the cell! } } } We get the oxygen (O2) from the air we breath – it is the waste product of photosynthesis The waste product carbon dioxide (CO2) is eliminated from our bodies as we exhale Plants use our the waste from cellular respiration in photosynthesis Anyone feeling this way??? } Fermentation – is the process of releasing energy from sugars with out using oxygen Some organisms can do this – ex. yeast This is important to brewers (beer) and bakers (bread)
