How its made
We use sugars taken from plants grown every year and
transform this into NatureWorks® biopolymer, an ingenious
material that’s used to design Ingeo™ innovations for
clothing, personal care, the home, garden, electronics,
appliances and new fresh food bio-packaging.
Polylactic Acid (PLA)
PLA is a natural plastic material called Ingeo™ which is made
from plants instead of oil. It is 100% annually renewable. Because
PLA is a natural material, it is best used for cold applications and
has a heat tolerance of 105 ˚F. All Pactiv PLA products are ASTM D
6400 certified and compostable in commercial facilities only, which
may not exist in all areas. Not suited for home composting.*
PLA Coated Paper Hot Cups and Soup Cups
Polylactic Acid Coated Paper is used for Pactiv’s compostable hot cups and soup cups. While PLA is used for cold applications,
when the PLA film is applied to paper such as our hot cups and soup cups, the PLA film takes on the properties of the paper
and therefore does not melt or deform. Pactiv’s PLA Lined/Coated Paper Cups are made from 100% annually renewable
resources and is ASTM D 6868 certified, compostable and chlorine free in commercial facilities only, which may not exist in
all areas. Not suited for home composting.*
Fiber Blend Hingeware
Pactiv’s Fiber Blend Hingeware is made of a blend of pulp fibers. All the materials in the Fiber Blend Hingeware are made from
sustainable, renewable resources and are ASTM D 6868 certified, compostable, and processed chlorine free in commercial
facilities only, which may not exist in all areas. Not suited for home composting.*
Bagasse Blend Tableware
The Bagasse Blend Tableware is a fiber (paper) material that is made of a blend of Bagasse (Sugar Cane) and Bamboo which are
sustainable and annually renewable resources. Pactiv’s Bagasse Blend Tableware is ASTM D 6868 certified and compostable in
commercial facilities only, which may not exist in all areas. Not suited for home composting.*
High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
Oriented Polystyrene (OPS)
HIPS is another rigid version of foam
polystyrene. An additive is used to allow
the material to be less brittle but still
maintain good stiffness properties. HIPS
products are offered in opaque colors such
as black and white.
Plastarch Material (PSM)
PSM is manufactured from starch and a blend
of several other materials. The base material
comes from a starch that is modified in order to
obtain heat resistant properties. Since PSM is
derived from corn, which is an annually renewable
resource, this material can handle temperatures
up to 200 ˚F making it perfect for higher heat
applications.
OPS is a rigid version of polystyrene. An advantage of
polystyrene is its clarity which is important for those that
want the contents to be seen in the package. It is also a
less expensive option than other clear plastics such as
PP or PET.
Poly Coated Paperboard
It is paper coated with polyethylene by an extrusion
coating process. The polyethylene coating provides
some protection against moisture and
grease resistance for paperboard cups
and containers.
Polypropylene (PP)
PP is a versatile material used for a variety of
applications. It has a high melting point making
it a good choice for hot foods and microwaving.
Talc-Filled Polypropylene (TFPP)
TFPP contains an average of 40% less plastic polymers
than standard polypropylene containers which reduces
plastic usage. This product is recyclable in the few
communities that have appropriate recycling programs.
Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (RPET)
PET is made primarily from natural gas feedstock, whereas RPET is produced from previously used post consumer/post
industrial plastic products. Pactiv uses a minimum of 20% recycled content in RPET packaging. This product is recyclable
in the few communities that have appropriate recycling programs.
