The Premiere of Angelina Jolie’s Film: First They Killed My Father was presided under the presidency of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni and Her Majesty Queen Mother Norodom Monineath on 18 February at Angkor Wat Temple, Siem Reap. According to Hollywood Actor Angelina Jolie, she has confirmed that the documentary is not focusing on the fear of war but illustrating patience, charitable, and talents of the Khmer people. She further stated that the film will help the world to understand what happen in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. She added, “I cannot find any words to describe what it means to me regarding to the history especially Cambodian history. Cambodia has changed my life, and without it I cannot become a mother.” She was referring to her adopted son, Maddox, who was 15 years old standing on stage with her. She was also proud of her own directed film and considered as the greatest thing because Cambodia is her second home. The documentary recorded in Khmer Language in Cambodia from November 2015 to February 2016. The film was produced with more than 3,500 participations include a group of technicians, Cambodian artists, as well as ordinary citizens with the Working Group. According to the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Ms. Phuong Sakona, she stated, “this film is part of the history of Cambodia. Although it was a painful past, but it is also a lesson for all of us to learn to protect the security and stability after Cambodia had undergone from the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge.” Senior Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance H.E. Aun Porn Moniroth on 23 February. A total of more than 1,500 people attended the event to watch the first premiere screened from 6pm on February 18-19 in Siem Reap. The second screen, there were two locations. One was at the Indoor Arena and the other one was at the Olympic Stadium from 6pm on 21 February. The working groups and Cambodian actors were also presented. The third screen was in Battambong province on 23 February 2017. As highlighted by Senior Adviser to the Supreme National Economic Council H.E. Mey Kalyan in the meeting, the finding indicated positive sign for Cambodia to sustain its economic growth. STATEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF ….. reaction from the United States of America with regard to the amendments of the Law on Political Party by the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia. 2. Cambodia undertook the amendments of the Law on Political Party based on the principles laid in its Constitution. From a legal perspective, the amended law applies indiscriminately to every political party and bears all the basic requirements that any democratic country should adhere to. 3. Nothing In the amended Law is threatening the fabric of a multi-party system set up by the Constitution. As in all democratic countries, the amended law is aimed at preventing abuses that are not in accordance with fundamental democratic principles such as incitation to racial hate, defamation, destruction of the social fabric of the nation. It is the inviolable duty of the Royal Government to protect the sanctity of its existing institutions. 4. In a similar matter related to the Law on Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations, the United States is criticizing the Royal Government of Cambodia based merely on groundless suspicions rather than on sound CAMBODIA’S GARMENT.. and well-reasoned factual justifications, to which the Royal Government finds it not acceptable. 5. In the recent past the United States has expressed concerns about foreign intervention in its own election. In a similar vein, Cambodia is also concerned about foreign interference, which is not just a possibility but already an obvious fact. CPC conducted the study in the light of its ongoing commitment to boost the productivity of above-said sector. It is, he added, also responsive to current market situation thus serves as stimulus that attracts more investments. In his remarks, H.E. Aun Porn Moniroth encouraged that such study is done on a regular basis to keep track of the sector’s productivity. ELECTRICITY SUPPLY IN CAMBODIA INCREASES BY 20 PERCENT The nationwide electricity supply in Cambodia saw an increase by nearly 20 percent in 2016 compared to a year earlier, according to a report of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Six hydropower dams and coal-power plants generated a total power of 928 megawatts and 505 megawatts, respectively, it added. 6. We call on the US Administration to respect international principles of non-interference and national sovereignty and to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of Cambodia. The power imported from neighboring countries – Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos – increased slightly, at 4.63 percent compared to 2015, it pointed out. 7. Cambodia's democracy is based on the will of Cambodian people and not on the preferences of any foreign government. The Royal Government of Cambodia cannot accept any interference nor any intrusion into its domestic affairs, under any direct and indirect forms or pretenses and it shall take all relevant and necessary measures to bring an end to such interference and any other act that runs counter to the Cambodian Constitution and laws. With the above-mentioned energy supply, some 1.91 million of the total 3.28 million households throughout the country, or 58.23 percent, have already had access to the electricity, while the electricity network has covered 10,589 villages, or 74.74 percent, said the report. Besides, the Ministry of Mines and Energy underlined that by 2018, Cambodia will generate about 400 megawatts more from the mega hydropower dam – Lower Se San II – in Stung Treng province. 2 VISIONS OF CAM BODIA TOURISM HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION WITH SINGAPORE Royal Government of Cambodia is working with Singapore to build more human resources oriented at tourism sector – a vital development drive of Cambodia. Senior Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance H.E. Aun Porn Moniroth discussed the work in a recent meeting with Ambassador of Singapore to Cambodia H.E. Michael Tan Keng Siong at the ministry office here in Phnom Penh on 20 February. The Cambodian human resource development will take pace through a cooperation framework between Cambodia and Singapore. The work will entail technical vocational training provisions, hospitality service management and tourism master plan development. Thanking the Singaporean side, H.E. Aun Porn Moniroth was positive that the cooperation will allow Cambodians to draw good experience and lessons learnt from Singapore to further improve tourism services in Cambodia. The Royal Government of Cambodia, added the minister, has been working hard to ensure political and social stability favorable for both national and international investment. He also encouraged more Singaporeans to invest in Cambodia. JAPAN PLEDGES TO SUPPORT CAPACITY BUILDING OF CAMBODIAN BLUE HELMET TROOPS The Government of Japan has expressed its strong will to continue supporting the capacity building of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) in their peacekeeping missions under the UN umbrella. The commitment was made known by Mr. Kamoshida Naoaki, First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, while attending the closing ceremony of civil engineer under capacity building project for UN Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO) at the Training School for Multinational Peacekeeping Forces in Kampong Speu province late last week. and their achievements in the past decade. Addressing at the event, Gen. Sem Sovanny, Director General of of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC), thanked the Government and Ministry of Defense of Japan for their continued assistance to Cambodia, especially for their annual support to RCAF’s capacity building for UNPKO. CAMBODIA, THAILAND JOIN HANDS FOR POWER TRANSMISSION AND NETWORK AT POIPET SEZ Cambodia and Thailand joined hands to develop power transmission network and supply at Cambodia’s Poipet Special Economic Zone (SEZ) adjacent to the border between the two countries with an investment amount of US$2-3 million. Chairwoman of Poipet PPSEZ Co., Ltd. Oknha Lim Chhiv Ho represented Cambodia to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Thai counterpart Ms. Preeyanart Soontornwata, President of B.Grimm Power Public Company Limited of Thailand, in Phnom Penh on 20 February. Under the signed agreement, the two sides will formulate a technical team to conduct feasibility study for the development of power transmission network and supply. According to Oknha Lim Chhiv Ho, the collaboration will mutually benefit both Cambodia and Thailand and consequently contributing to the countries’ economic growth. The above-mentioned training course lasted for 12 days with 39 trainees and 8 Japanese trainers. Mr. Kamoshida Naoaki highly evaluated capacity of Cambodian blue helmet troops SECURITIES EXCHANGE PLANS ONLINE TRADE IN MID-2017 Cambodia Securities Exchange will launch online share trading by mid of this year in order to promote the access among individual traders. According to Cambodia Securities Exchange Chief Executive Officer Mr. Hong Sok Hour, the online platform will serve as a convenient tool that injects individuals with timely information and updates to trade their shares. The online trading would be put into operation in July or September this year, he added. Increasing smartphone and internet access among Cambodians is the driver behind the online share trading concept of the Cambodia Securities Exchange. To date, there are four private and state-run companies and enterprises listed in the securities exchange. They are Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, Green Twin International, Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, and Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone. As shared by Mr. Hong Sok Hour, about 8,000 accounts are active every day with trading amount of over US$10,000. 3 ISSUE 08: 20 – 28 FEBRUARY 2017 Over 287,000 International Tourists Visit Angkor Temples in First Month of 2017 During the first month of this year, more than 287,000 international tourists visited the Angkor Archeological Park – almost 16 percent increase compared to the same period in 2016, according to the announcement of Angkor Enterprise, the state-owned agency in charge of Angkor income management. Cambodia, added the source, generated US$8,304,740 from Angkor entrance ticket sales from the mentioned number of international visitors, 287,041 to be exact. Of the visitors, Chinese outnumbered other nationalities with a total of 93,875 tourists – followed by 40,156 South Koreans, 21,709 Americans, 13,858 British, 13,199 Japanese, 12,520 French, 11,797 Australians, 8,910 Germans, 8,504 Russians, 8,372 Thais, and the rest 54,141 of 112 nationalities. Entrance tickets to Angkor Archeological Park (AAP) were served in three different categories: one day visit for US$ 20, three-day visit for US$ 37 and seven-day visit for US$ 62. Starting from February 1, 2017 onwards, the entrance fees for the Angkor temples increase to: one-day pass costs US$37, three-day pass US$62, and seven-day pass US$72. US$2 from each ticket sold is donated to the Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals in support of their mission of providing free treatment to Cambodian children.
