FAMILY WEEKEND 2015
NEXT EXIT
What do we do when we first get to campus for Family
Weekend and how do we meet up with our student?
What is Family Weekend?
The focus of this event is to welcome our students’ parents,
family members and family friends to campus so that they have
the opportunity to experience a portion of their student’s life at
UC Merced. To this end, we encourage guests to participate in a
variety of academic and social events especially designed to give
family members a taste of UC Merced.
Do parents need to register for Family Weekend?
Yes, you need to register if you plan on attending any of the
Family Weekend events. Family members should register as
you are the ones receiving the registration material. You could
certainly ask your student to see me and fill out the registration
form for you but I can tell you (from long experience) that there
is no guarantee that your student will actually follow through
on this task! You need to complete the registration form online:
https://intelforms.ucmerced.edu/Form/Family_Weekend_2015.
You may also bring cash or check payment on the day of the
event. Please make checks payable to UC Regents.
When does Family Weekend begin and end?
Family Weekend begins Friday evening (if your schedule allows)
and ends by mid-day Sunday. Time to leave? Families usually
schedule their departure for mid-afternoon on Sunday–this will
allow plenty of time for your student to get studying done for
classes on Monday. The dress for this weekend is casual.
Who attends Family Weekend and where do we stay?
Parents, family members, guests and friends of UC Merced
students are all welcome! For lodging information, please refer
to our website for a listing of local hotels in the Merced area. The
newest hotel in Merced, the Courtyard Marriott, will be offering
a special Family Weekend event rate. The Hampton will also be
offering a special rate for Family Weekend as well.
What does the
registration fee include?
The fee includes your family
folder (available at the
Registration Check-in),
snacks throughout the
weekend, three meals
on Saturday, brunch on
Sunday, Li’l Bobcat activities
and Stadium Fleece Blanket. Be
the envy of the crowd! The Stadium
fleece Blanket is perfect for the beach, a
picnic or any sporting event.
If you arrive during the day on Friday, you need to go to the Office
of Student Life (Kolligian Library 184) to pick up your Family
Weekend packet. The office will be open until 8 p.m. Ask your
student (before you arrive for the weekend) where and when you
plan to meet–we won’t know how to reach your student, then join
us in the Lakireddy Auditorium (COB 102) for Family Movie Night!
What’s playing for Family Movie Night?
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
With the IMF now
disbanded and Ethan Hunt
(Tom Cruise) out in the
cold, a new threat -- called
the Syndicate -- soon
emerges. The Syndicate is a
network of highly skilled
operatives who are
dedicated to establishing a
new world order via an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Faced
with what may be the most impossible mission yet, Ethan gathers
his team and joins forces with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a
disavowed British agent who may or may not be a member of this
deadly rogue nation.
Phil Kaye: An award-winning poet, published author,
and co-director of project VOICE.
An award-winning poet, published author, and co-director of
project voice, Phil Kaye has performed around the world in
venues from sold out theaters to maximum security prisons.
Raised in a California beach town to a Japanese mother and
Jewish-American father, Phil first fell in love with spoken word
poetry at age 17. Since then,
he has performed in hundreds
of venues in over a dozen
countries. His work has been
viewed online over five million
times and featured in media
outlets ranging from NPR to Al
Jazeera America to Upworthy.
com. He is the co-director of
Project VOICE, an organization
that uses poetry as tool to promote empowerment, improve
literacy, and encourage empathy and creative collaboration in
classrooms and communities. Through his work with Project
VOICE, Phil has worked hands-on with students of all different
ages in over a hundred schools around the world.
What is “Hypnotist Extraordinaire”?
Are there any activities for younger family members?
Yes, we have a fabulous program called Li’l Bobcat Activities that
is designed for children ages 3 to 10 and held Saturday when
many parents wish to participate in other activities. UC Merced
student volunteers spend the morning with the Li’l Bobcats. (All
children must be accompanied by an adult family member.)
Please join us Saturday
night at 7 p.m. or 9:45
p.m. for “Hyponotist
Extraordinaire” event
in Downtown Merced.
Sailesh has been Dubbed
by many as “the World’s
Greatest Hypnotist.” His live
performances have been
described as a cross between the best frat party you’ve ever been
to and a live concert. Sailesh’s show takes audience members
on a fantastical journey using hypnosis, improv, music and
interactivity to create a whole lot of laughter and fun. Come and
bring your family and memorable Family Weekend event.
