Nephron’s New Facility in South Carolina Lou Kennedy’s Vision of Economic Growth in a Healthy Environment Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation is a privately-owned, global leader in the manufacturing of generic respiratory medications. Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, the company recently opened its newest facility in West Columbia, South Carolina. The new building reflects Nephron President and CEO Lou Kennedy’s philosophy about merging technological innovation with business expansion strategies. Reinforcing this philosophy by example, Nephron’s owners, Lou and Bill Kennedy, liked both the economic and environmental advantages combined with the technological innovation of the Griswold Water Systems (GWS) proposal to deliver on the water treatment and management requirements of the building’s cooling system. The GWS offering will also contribute to the LEED (Gold standard) certification of the building, which the owners are seeking. Water Treatment and Management. GWS technologies include the WaveTM (chemical-free water treatment), a conductivity actuated blowdown system, and a low-energy-use basin sweeping system that employs centrifugal separation to remove dirt and sludge. The GWS WaveTM always includes InstAlertTM remote monitoring that wirelessly transmits flow, conductivity, and cooling system operational status. This suite of equipment to prevent scale, microbiological fouling, and corrosion on the cooling system has resulted in impressive results on this large cooling system*, as follows. * System Capacity: 3,700 tons of cooling operating 365 days/24 hours (2860 hours), system volume of 18,500 gallons, average load at 50% of design capacity Nephron Owners Bill and Lou Kennedy WATER AND SEWER SAVINGS: At Nephron, an increase in Cycles of Concentration (C of C) from 9 under typical chemical treatment to 14 under GWS technologies provided the following water use efficiency. • S avings of 1,200,000 gallons per year water purchase: • 5% savings of water purchase • 36% savings of blowdown sewage fee, or 100% saving of blowdown sewage fee if discharged to stormwater • If benign blowdown is reused for non-potable use such as landscaping, there is savings of 2,400,000 gallons per year of water purchase: • 10% savings of water purchase • 100% savings of sewer fees CHEMICAL ELIMINATION: Not only are considerable economic savings realized, but the positive impact on human health and the environment is also substantial. • 2 63 gallons (17 15-gal drums) of scale preventer and corrosion inhibitor mix • 150 gallons (30 5-gal pails) of non-oxidizing biocides (highly toxic) • 192 gallons (12 15-gal drums) of chlorine bleach ENERGY SAVINGS: Superior system cleanliness, lowest total bacteria counts (TBC), and excellent solids management all equate to strong energy savings. Only 20 thousandths of an inch (0.020”) of foulant on heat exchange surfaces will increase energy usage by 20%. Wave has provided clean heat transfer surfaces at Nephron. A new tower will rapidly acquire a 0.020” of foulant with chemical treatment. The 5% savings (a 400,000 kwh reduction) for this site at 12¢ per kWh is $48,000. 2801 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, CA 92606 | 386.663.3370 GRISWOLD WATER SYSTEMS G r i s w o l d Wa t e r S y s t e m s . c o m
