Winter equipment Kazakhstan Snow chains There is no specific legislation in Kazakhstan concerning the use of snow chains. Winter tyres The technical regulations of the Customs Union (Russia – Belarus – Kazakhstan) entered into force on 1 January 2015. According to these regulations, during winter months (December, January and February) vehicles must be fitted with winter tyres compliant with the following requirements: • Winter tyres must be fitted on all wheels of a transport unit (transport unit means a motor vehicle without an attached trailer, or a combination consisting of a motor vehicle and an attached trailer). • Winter tyres must be specially marked by “3PMSF”, “3 peak mountain snowflake” (Alpine symbol) and/or “M+S”, “M&S”, “M-S”, (Mud and Snow symbols). • If there are no tread wear indicators, tyres are required to have at least 4mm tread design depth. • Tyres are deemed to be not roadworthy when tread wear indicators appear (if they are equipped with such an indicator). • Studded tyres, if used, must be fitted on all wheels (all axles) of the transport unit. Such tyres are prohibited during summer months (June, July and August). • The period of use of winter tyres can be extended by the regional state administration bodies of the Member States of the Customs Unions, if necessary. In normal conditions, tread design depth of tyres must meet the following requirement, if no tread wear indicators are visible: • For vehicle categories N2, N3 and O3, O4 at least 1.0mm tread design depth. • For vehicle categories M2 and M3 at least 2.0mm tread design depth. • For vehicle categories M1, N1, and O1, O2 at least 1.6mm tread design depth.
