Winter tyres
The technical regulations of the Customs Union (Russia – Belarus – Kazakhstan) entered into
force on 1 January 2015.
According to these regulations, during winter months (December, January and February) vehicles
must be fitted with winter tyres compliant with the following requirements:
•
Winter tyres must be fitted on all wheels of a transport unit (transport unit means a motor
vehicle without an attached trailer, or a combination consisting of a motor vehicle and an
attached trailer).
•
Winter tyres must be specially marked by “3PMSF”, “3 peak mountain snowflake” (Alpine
symbol) and/or “M+S”, “M&S”, “M-S”, (Mud and Snow symbols).
•
If there are no tread wear indicators, tyres are required to have at least 4mm tread design
depth.
•
Tyres are deemed to be not roadworthy when tread wear indicators appear (if they are
equipped with such an indicator).
•
Studded tyres, if used, must be fitted on all wheels (all axles) of the transport unit. Such
tyres are prohibited during summer months (June, July and August).
•
The period of use of winter tyres can be extended by the regional state administration
bodies of the Member States of the Customs Unions, if necessary.
In normal conditions, tread design depth of tyres must meet the following requirement, if no tread
wear indicators are visible:
•
For vehicle categories N2, N3 and O3, O4 at least 1.0mm tread design depth.
•
For vehicle categories M2 and M3 at least 2.0mm tread design depth.
•
For vehicle categories M1, N1, and O1, O2 at least 1.6mm tread design depth.
