Altitude Profile
A leisurely walk on well kept ground, ideal for
an afternoon stroll. This walk takes in the
Robert Adam Bridge at Kedleston Hall as well
as the boat house. This leisurely route heads out
the boundary of the parkland’s before crossing
the brook that feeds the lakes before returning
along the far bank. Because this walk uses the
car park in the grounds of the Hall, access is
restricted by opening times; these are 10am to 6
pm Early March to the end of October, and
10am to 4 pm at other times. Additionally this is
a National trust property so please expect a
charge to access the house and grounds.
The Robert Adam Bridge and Weir
Kedleston Hall's web sites state that there may
be occasional closures during the winter months
so it may be worth giving them a telephone call
(01332 842191) so as not to have a wasted
journey. The only day that the park is totally
closed to the public is Christmas Day.

Kedleston Park Lakeside Stroll
The tea shop for this walk is situated at the Hall, but dependant on the time of year it is possible that
it may not be open, or very busy.
Getting There:
From Derby take the Kedleston Road out of the City past Derby University for a distance of about
two and a quarter miles. Immediately before entering the village of Quandron bear left to stay on
Kedleston Road. Continue down this road past the Kedleston Hotel and the golf course to the gates
of Kedleston Hall (on the left) a distance of a little over one mile. Pass through the gates and follow
the drive to the house and car park.
It is worth noting that if travelling to Derby on the A38 from the north, Kedleston Road in not
directly accessible, drive to the the Markeaton Island and follow the signs for Derby University.
Effectively use the island to perform a U-turn. Kedleston Road is then the first exit as you head
back north on the A38.
The Walk:
Leave The car park via the Visitors centre and walk
along the path towards Kedleston Hall. From the
Hall follow the drive way away from the house
down to the Robert Adams bridge over the lake. On
the way down to the bridge look out for Bentley's
Well sitting in a depression to the right of the drive,
Bentley's Well
this well is marked on some maps as the Lion Head Fountain. On reaching the bridge, turn left and
walk along the lake side to the rather grand boathouse and fishing room, continue past the
boathouse to a weir a little further upstream.
Follow the clear grassy path beside the lake as it begins to narrow and eventually comes to a curved
weir, at one time there was a footbridge above this weir, and although it no longer exists it is still
marked as being in position on many maps. Continue to follow the lakeside to a third weir where
the lake reverts to being Cutler Brook, the water course that feeds the lake system of Kedleston
Park. Follow the brook upstream to the park boundary, then cross Cutler Brook via the wooden foot
bridge next to the road bridge. Once over the brook turn right and pass through a wooden kissing
gate, this gate has no weighted of spring closure so it is possible to leave it in a position where stock
could escape, bearing this in mind be sure to close it behind you once you are through. A grassy
path now lies ahead again following the course of Cutler Brook back towards the lakes, after a short
distance the path comes to a stock gate, beyond which is a wooden footbridge over a small stream
that feeds into the lakes. Staying with the path to the curved weir, form here on there are may
excellent views across the lakes to Kedleston Hall that put the whole landscaped panorama and the
Hall into context. Pass through a second stock gate then continue along the lakeside to the Robert
Adams Bridge and weir, turn right and cross the bridge, being careful of traffic as the foot paths are
quite narrow on the bridge. Once over the bridge follow the drive back up to the house, then retrace
your steps back to the car park and the end of the walk.
