Direction: There are many ways to the Mt. Bevkov vrh. One of them starts in the village Straža, continues through the ravine Vovkova grapa and leads to the hydrological phenomenon Zaganjalščica (called a source of water under the dispersed village Cerkljanski Vrh in the ravine Vovkova grapa near the farm Zakrog, which is an interesting and unique karstic phenomenon due to its variable water current. Normally it lasts 7 minutes before the water almost dries up and breaks through again. Therefore all water sources of this type are in the slovenian terminology called Zaganjalka). Follow the way to the farm Na Ravan, where tasting and buying of cheese and other milk products are possible, which allready won numerous prizes. Now it takes only half an hour to the top, where you can see the chapel and get a stamp. The way offers a magnificent view at the Mt. Porezen and Cerkno. Return to the intersection (near the farm Na Ravan), then turn right to the farm Hobovše. Soon you reach a parting of the ways, where you turn left and follow the way to the farm Stotnikar, then to the farm Mator and go on to the farm Kacin. Here you leave the main road and turn left. The way descends and soon you join the walking path No. 5, that leads you to the town of Cerkno. The path leads from the center of the town Cerkno on a sunny slope to the 3 km distant village Zakriž. The area ofthe village is protected by Natura 2000.After a walk on an asphalt, winding and quite narrow path you are rewarded with the possibility of sightseeing the old village's "pajštvo" (fruit kiln), in which in autumn they are still drying fruit, but most of it is distillate into fruit brandy. In the village you can visit the Church of Saint Andrew, which is equipped with »nabrežinskim« marble. Pearl of church is organ from 1730 and they are rarity in Europe. You can visit also the Italian military fortress, and many other attractions. Further on the path is winding on slopes toward the village Trebenče, where you turn right and walk along the macadam road, passing through the Mostanija you arrive back to the town Cerkno. You start in front of the hotel and then you pass by the parish St. Anne Church, which is an important in baroque style build cultural monument, work of the architect Gregor Maček. Its interior contains a rich collection of work of the local masters from the 19th century, which was nicely renovated. Turn right and proceed on the main road. The direction sign shows you to cross the road and to continue your way down the narrow street on the right, where the road soon turns into a path. You walk your way along mountain ridge of the peak Grintavec heading for the Čeplez and Planina villages. It was exactly here and further down to Škoflje that lead the old antique path. When you arrive on the main road, you can cross it and head for Planina or you can start returning back along the main, asphalt road down into the valley. After approximately 2 km you turn left in hairpin band on a side road and drop down passing by the houses to the woods. Continue your way parallel to the road and the Oresovko spring towards Cerkno. ITINERARY No. 2 Twisty path Cerkno – Zakriž – Vrh Križa – Ravne – Cerkno (12,40 km; 4 h) BLEGOŠ (1562 m above sea level) Počivalo – Blegoš - SC Cerkno – Počivalo (14.3 km; 4h) It leads you through the Zakriž village right to the shoulder of the mountain above the Vrh Križa village, where the road splits towards Ravne and Bukovo. It is through this Ravne village that goes the twisty path. It is known for its rare sight - aragonite cave. From the sea level of 700 m you descend into Dolenje Ravne, where the sign directs you on the macadam road. The way becomes now a gentile uphill grade, a tranquil walk, on which you can visit an old Cerkno house, a cross sign along the road, haylofts covered with straw and refresh yourself in the spring along the way. Return to the valley with a downhill hike across pastureland and grassland through the small village Čelo. It takes about 4 hours walking. Start at the parking lot Počivalo and follow the road to the top of the Ski-centre Cerkno (cca 2 km), where you turn onto the wood-path at the sign for Blegoš and continue to the mountain hut on the Blegoš. Go on till you reach the mountain top of Blegoš (1563 m) or descend on the other way back to the hill Slugov grič and continue on the marked path to the restaurant at the Ski-centre Cerkno. ITINERARY No. 6 Path of old plum-trees Cerkno – »Brce« – Labinje – Cerkno (6: 5,40 km; 2 h) This path leads you to the Labinje village and it has many versions. The shortest leads through the small village Ravne, it is not so tiring and it takes about 1,5 hour. The second road goes somehow under the village, back to the main road and takes about 2 hours. The third and the longest of all, leads right to the village, across the mountain pass to the old ruins of the miner's church, to the so called Miklavž steeple. According to the oral tradition which passed on through generations a legend of a buried treasure under the ruins of the church tower, the lightening would kill the one who will try to dig the treasure out. Along the rut you follow the marks, which show the way back to the valley. On this road opens a fantastic view on Cerkno underneath you and on the Planina and Čeplez villages on the opposite slope. The village is known for its plums, and if you take a walk in autumn or winter time in the vicinity, you can experience also the traditional fruit distillation. ITINERARY No. 3 Path of three possibilities Cerkno – Gradišče – Cerkno (3b: 5,10 km; 2 h) KOJCA (1303 m above sea level) Jesenice - Kojca – Jesenice (6 km; 2h) The marked path leads you from the village Jesenica to the pass Vrh Raven and continues from the parking lot further on a lane in direction of the hill Kojca. After the steep climb you will be fascinated of the views on the mountains of Bohinj and on the Mt. Porezen northern and eastern of Kojca, and of the views on all the mountains of the mountain range Cerkljansko in Idrijsko hribovje in the south and west of Kojca. On your return go right at the pass Lipje and descend over meadows and through the forest to the main road Jesenica – Bukovo, where you turn left in direction of Jesenica to your starting point. POREZEN (1630 m above sea level) Cerkno – Poče – Labinjske lehe – Porezen – Razpotje – Labinje - Cerkno (27,8 km, 8h) Start in Cerkno and go to the centre of the village Poče, where a sign for the Mt. Porezen leads you first to the left and then right. After getting to the “T”-cross-roads of asphalt ways (at house No. Poče 13) the ashalt ends between the houses and a macadam road begins. From here on it is much better marked. The first climb passes through the forest, then across a grassland (Labinjske lehe) and higher again through the wood. Pay attention to the sign “Poče - položna pot”, what means Poče – level path, because you will return to Poče from this point. After you reach the mountain top of the Porezen and get enough from the amazing views, continue across the north-east crest to the mountain hut Dom Andreja Žvana – Borisa, that stands almost under the mountain top. Behind the hut go on over a lane and keep to the right side, so you will go round the top on the east side. On your return keep to the main macadam road, which leads you to the road fork, continue allways right till you come to the village Labinje. Now descend to Cerkno. The path leads you through the centre of Cerkno along the mountain slope towards NW to the 3 km distant village Zakriž. After walking for 1.5 km the road separates and turns right on the rut. Along the road you can visit the old Cerkno house or taste the invigorating water from the spring. In front of you elevates the gentle slope Gradišče, beautiful and of easy access, where antique coins and weapon were found. You can have a rest along the way sitting down on a bench, enjoy in the marvelous scenery on Cerkno and its surrounding villages, afterwards you can descend back into the valley. The path (3a) is suitable for walkers of all generations, as it takes only about 1,5 hour and it is not tiring. You can choose a longer version (2,5 hours) by walking further on to the village Trebenče (3c) and (3b) take us down into the valley along the Zapoška stream back to Cerkno (2 hours). ITINERARY No. 7 Path to the Partisan Hospital Franja Cerkno – Log – Bolnica Franja – Poljane – Labinje – Cerkno (11,30 km; 3,5 h) From Cerkno the way leads you down the main road towards the Dolenji Novaki village. At the Inn in Log turn left and along the spring rise through the grove to the parking place. From here leads the path to the gorge of the Čerinščica spring, to Pasica gorge. In it was build the famous partisan hospital in 1943, which was run by the founder Franja Bojc-Bidovec. It is an extraordinary, still preserved authentic monument from the World War II battle NOB. After visiting the gorge you can return back to Cerkno through Poljane and Labinje. Or you can continue the path toward the peak Črni vrh, where in winter time you can ski, in summer time you can enjoy in hiking or pick mushrooms and blueberries. ITINERARY No. 4 Forester's path Cerkno – »gozdraski vrt« - Cerkno (3,2 km; 1,5 h) This path leads you to the left bank of the Cerknica River, into a steep mountain slope Lajše. Its start is on the macadam road and after half an hour of temperate walk you turn left into the wood. Along the road you can quench your thirst in the fresh spring and afterwards you set out on the forest path and turn left on the trail at the fenced Forester's garden. On the clearing there are benches waiting for you, where you can have a rest, smell the fresh air and enjoy in the marvelous scenery on Cerkno, on the villages in the surroundings and on the highest peak of this region the peak Porezen. Participants of the 6th Communist Party training, who were killed in the German attack on Cerkno in 1944. After a short uphill grade turn left at the crossing to the rural house in Galež, where you can along the road visit the fruit kiln. The path leads to a peaceful wood, fascinated by the bird's singing and by the view on the peak Porezen you will find out to your surprise that you have already arrived at the village Trebenče. After crossing the main road make a short stop at the small chapel by the road, which leads you back to the Cerkno town. It takes about 2 hours walking. The track is curving partly on the asphalt and partly on the macadam road through woods, that offer a lot of shadow. While cycling you will se an old italian drinking basin used for cattle and just a little bit further you will see an old italian border cavern. From here you go on to the first crossroads, where you turn right. The track brings you to Pretovč where you go down to the crossroads. From here you make half a circle and the road brings you to the crossroads below the restaurant. Here you turn left, at the next crossroad you turn right. That's the way to get to the restaurant, where you can rest and enjoy incredible views and scenery. From the crossroads bellow the restaurant you follow the ski slope Grič to the crossroads under the two-seater Grič, turn left nad soon you will be at your starting point. IN THE MOUNTAIN RANGE CERKLJANSKO HRIBOVJE (Cerkno - Ravne - Jesenica - Bukovo - Zakojca - Gorje - Poče - Novaki - Kladje - Lajše Zaganjalka - Cerkljanski vrh, 5 h) Distance: 62 km Lowest point: 315 m above sea level Height difference: 2324 m Highest point: 1071 m above sea level Set off from the centre of Cerkno and head towards Želin. Turn right just after the cemetery. The first 500 meters of the climb are very steep, than it becomes more gradual as it follows a picturesque valley. The paved road soon gives way to a lane, which leads across grassy slopes and through the woods and climbs towards Ravne. After 3.3 km turn right onto the paved road and ride 800 m to the village. After this strenuous climb, you can cool off in the fascinating cave Aragonitna jama, known for its spectacular aragonite formations in the shape of sea urchins. Soon after you leave the village, the road becomes more level and you ride towards Jesenica on mostly flat terrain. After 3.5 km you reach the village and if you look below it, you can see an interesting group of hayracks, which represent the typical rural architecture of this area. The road continues across cultivated grassy slopes to Mt. Kojca and after 5.5 km you come to Bukovo. The 4.5 km long path to Zakojca leads through a forest, but soon a beautiful view of the Baška grapa ravine below and the magnificent Alps in the background opens up. In Zakojca you can visit the birthplace of France Bevk, which is also an excellent example of the rural architecture in this area. It displays the life and work of this author. Before you set off again, you can grab a bite to eat at a tourist farm called Pri Flandru.The route than follows country lanes out of Zakojca and soon begins to climb a grassy slope. The first 2.2 kilometres are more demanding due to the steep climb to the pass Vrh Ravni and then the path begins to descend. Soon you ride onto a better road and continue through the village Gorje to Poče, a charming village beneath Mt. Porezen (5.8 km). Head towards Labinje and follow a pleasant path with a beautiful view of Cerkno. After 1.5 km you reach a crossroads; the road straight ahead leads to Labinje (1 km), whose main attraction is the tower Miklavžev turn (Nicholas Tower) and then descends back to Cerkno (2.5 km). Or you can turn left at the crossroads and continue the ride towards Novaki. For the first 3 km the path ascends a wooded slope to the pass between the Mt. Drnova and the slopes of the Mt. Cimprovka, where it begins to descend. Soon the forest recedes and you descend towards Novaki across lovely grassy slopes with enchanting views of the valley. After a total of 6 km you reach the main road and turn left uphill. Climb 1 km to the Lovec Bistro, which houses a collection of old farming tools. Those who love tougher climbs and descends can continue uphill past the tourist farm “Za Robom” to the hill Tuškov grič and then descend down the steep slope of the Mt. Cimprovka and back to the main cycling route. Those who are less interested in such feats can descend back along the main road to the village Gorenji Novaki. After 3 km there is a large bend, where you turn left and continue towards Kladje or follow the main road through Dolenji Novaki and down to the Partisan Hospital Bolnica Franja, from where you can return to Cerkno. The first part of the path towards Kladje leads through the forest. After 1 km turn right where a path branches off. The mostly level path affords lovely views of the slopes and villages beneath Mt. Porezen, where you just have ridden. The 12 km ride from Novaki to Kladje on relatively flat terrain ends with a 1.5 km climb along the main road, which is also part of the course of the annual bicycle race Maraton Franja. From Kladje the ride continuous towards Lajše and soon another climb begins. When you leave the forest, there is a spectacular view of valley and the cultivated slopes above Cerkno at the side. After 1.3 km turn right onto an unpaved road and begin to descend towards Lajše (2.5), where stands a chapel commemorating all the victims of World War II. Follow a slightly rougher lane and descend into the ravine Volkova grapa. After 2 km you reach Zaganjalka, an interesting karstic intermittent spring which is unique due to its appearing at irregular intervals. The route climbs out of the ravine to Cerkljanski Vrh (1.5 km), where it joins the Škofja Loka Cycling Route. You can continue riding along that route or follow it back to Kladje and descend to Cerkno (6 km). ON THE TRAIL OF FLUTES AND TAVERNS (Cerkno - Želin - Jagršče - Šebrelje - Stopnik - Straža - Cerkno, 3,5 h) Distance: 37.5 km Lowest point: 224 m above sea level Height difference: 1321 m Highest point: 1019 m above sea level Set off from the centre of Cerkno and head towards Želin where you turn right and cross the bridge towards Jagršče. Follow the river Idrijca for the first 500 m, then climb the paved road to the village Gorenji Potoki, where the climb becomes more gradual. The route follows the Slovene Geological Trail and you can observe the marl layer, which is particularly noticeable at the marked observation points. The ride takes you through forests and across grassy slopes. After the last step climb you come to Jagršče (4 km). Refreshments are available at the bistro, if you want to relax after the strenuous climb, or you can visit the Church of St. Uršula. Continue the ride towards Šebrelje. Set off from Jagršče and continue along the main road. After a brief climb the road begins to descend towards Zadnja Sevnica. The indigenous Isonzo trout is still found in the brook Sevnica (2.5 km). After cooling off at the brook continue uphill and pass the farms Močnik, Jereb and Rovtar until you reach the road that leads to Šebrelje (you can also turn left here and ride to Idrijske Krnice). After 3.5 km, you come to a paved road, where you can stop at the bistro (hunting lodge). Descend to Šebrelje (1.5 km). At the intersection at the end of your descend to the village continue straight ahead (if you turn left, you will descend back into the valley – Stopnik). At the end of the village follow a lane between the fields to the Church of Sveti Ivan (St. John), which affords magnificent views. From the church you can also descend on foot to the archaeological site Divje Babe. Numerous cave bear remains and traces of Cro-Magnon man have been discovered at this paleontological site. The most famous find is a Neanderthal flute, the oldest known musical instrument in the World.On your way you will pass farmhouses, where friendly and hospitable locals will gladly offer you their home-made treats, the most delicious of which is undoubtedly the home-made dried meat specialty called Šebreljski želodec, that you simply must try.Return to the village Šebrelje and descend back into the valley - Stopnik. In Stopnik turn left and continue along the main road to Želin and continue from here to Cerkno. After 1,1 km you come to the crossroads and continue through the village Gorje (0,35 km), where you turn left at the basin (0,04 km) and go on to the main road (0,13 km), where you turn right till you reach the crossroads in front of the village Zakriž (1,7 km). Here you follow again right to Zakriž, where you find the Church of St. Andrea, a distillery, a fruit drying house and the oldest water supply in the region Cerkljanska. If you turn right, you go on towards Vrh Križa (1,4 km), where an old italian military fortress stands. Turn right towards the village Jesenica (2,8 km) and continue next 1,7 km to the crossroads, where you drive left to the village Orehek (0,6 km). If you turn right at the crossroads in the village, you can visit the Church of St. Lenart or you drive straight ahead and descend into the ravine Orehovška grapa. Follow 1,7 km to the next crossroads and turn left to the farm Lapanja, which is known for its bees and honey. But if you turn at this crossroads right over the bridge, you will drive 2,8 km to the next crossroads, where you turn left. You descend here to the main road (0,18 km) and drive directly to Želin (2,4 km), where you turn left and reach Cerkno after 4,6 km. The route goes mostly through the protected parc Natura 2000. Therefore you could see two protected species like the butterfly Jersey Tiger (Callimorpha quadripunctaria) and the Lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) during your cycling tour. ALONG THE RAPAL BORDER LINE (Cerkno - Planina - Kladje - Oselica - Ermanovec - Kladje - »Vrh ulce« - Leskovica - Robidnica – parking lot Počivalo - Blegoš - parking lot Počivalo - Dolenji Novaki - Log – Cerkno; 4,5 h) Distance: 50 km Lowest point: 224 above sea level Height difference: 1321 m Highest point: 1391 above sea level Start in Cerkno and drive in direction to the village Planina. After 1,8 km on the main road there is a macadam road on the right side. This track leads you through woods and meadows back to the main road (2,9 km). Now follows a climb to the village Kladje (1,6 km), then descend 4,4 km to the crossroads in front of the village Sovodenj. Turn left and ride 0,85 km to the next crossroads, where you go right and follow the main road to the mountain hut on the Ermanovec (4,1 km) and further almost to the pass and village Kladje (3,6 km). Here you turn right and go on to the next pass »Vrha ulce« (1,9 km), where you ride towards the farm Tomažek (2,6 km) and from here on to the cross-roads and again right into the valley of the village and brook Kopačnica (3,4 km). Continue towards the village Leskovica (4,7 km), then through the village Robidnica (1,6 km) to the parking lot Počivalo (2,1 km). Now follow the cycling route SC Cerkno to the parting of the ways Slugov ovinek (2,2 km), where you turn right and continue to the mountain hut on the Blegoš (3,1 km). The track is curving partly on an asphalt and partly on a macadam road through woods, that offer a lot of shadow. Continue on foot from the mountain hut till you reach the mountain top of Blegoš. The return to Cerkno is actually only a descend into the valley from the mountain hut to the parking lot Počivalo (5,3 km), further to the village Dolenji Novaki (4 km) and through Log (1,8 km) back to Cerkno (3,6 km).
