Chapter 1 - The study of Life Biology is the study of living and once living things Section 1:1 Biology in Use Who uses Biology Beekeeper Living, non-living, and dead [once living] Examples Living - Plants and animals Doctor Non-living – soil, rocks, Optometrist You water Dead – wood, paper Differences? Tools of Biology Magnifying glass - hand lens 2. Microscope 1. Micro = small Scope = to look Types of microscopes A. Light microscope [compound] Has two or more lenses and passes light through the object being viewed Power of lenses – multiply the objective lens by the eyepiece lens Ex. 10X times 43X = 430X B. Stereomicroscope Used to view larger objects and things that light will not pass through Has two eyepiece lenses but the magnifying power is less C. Electron Microscopes Very high powered [500,000 x}; shoots beams of electrons at an object Most require the objects to be dead 3. Computers Used to store, organize, and analyze data 4. Lab tools Slides, probes, rulers, calculators, beakers, test tubes, etc.
