Sample Population Question: Kolkata
Discuss two problems that may arise in an of high population
density or an area of low population density
Kolkata is located in India in southern Asia. Kolkata is a megacity. The city has
been steadily growing due to famine and civil wars in the countryside. Many
poor farmers move to the city in search of jobs. Often they move to illegal
settlements known as bustees. The local councils have not given any amenities
to these areas. This has lead to two major problems.
Kolkata
The first problem in Kolkata is the lack of clean water. Many bustees have very
little taps and little to no houses have running water. This means many people
have to queue for hours to get water. This leads to people washing, cleaning
and even drinking out of the dirty rivers and streams. This leads to people
getting water born diseases such as dysentery and malaria. In India 186 million
of the 1.2 billion have no access to clean water.
The Second problem I would like to discuss is the high rates of
pollution Kolkata creates. The majority of sewage facilities in Kolkata are
underdeveloped for the megacity. The huge bustees have not been fitted with
sewage treatment sites and are often emptied into the river. This creates a
huge problem. This sewage pollution added to the litter has created an
impassable river and destroying wildlife.
In conclusion two problems faced by the city of Kolkata are: the
lack of clean water and pollution of the land and its rivers.
