The Divine Comedy
Hell Drawing
Fill in the poster of Hell according to the directions below.
 In the box below Hell, write the words that are carved in black above the Gate of
Hell.
 In the section at the top above the VESTIBULE, fill in a dark forest with the three
animals Dante encounters.
 On the line in the VESTIBULE, write the name of the people assigned there, then
draw a “throng of people.” Color the narrow section below the VESTIBULE and
above the FIRST CIRCLE blue, and label the name of the river Dante has to cross.
If you would like, show Charon in his boat in the river.
 In the FIRST CIRCLE, on the line write its name. Then in the box draw a castle
protected by walls and surrounded by a stream and a green lawn. Include
people to represent Homer, Socrates, Plato, etc. (You can find pictures online
or draw your own people. Be sure to label the pictures. This can be done for
any people you have to include in your drawing, except for the FURIES and
HARPIES.)
 In the SECOND CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of sinners
sent here. Draw MINOS with his tail, near the line to show that he is like the
guardian of this circle. Include CLEOPATRA and FRANCESCA and PAOLO in this
section, and include a drawing that shows how people here are punished.
 In the THIRD CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of sinners
sent here. Draw CERBERUS, again near the line, using the description as given
in the book. Include a gray, livid marsh where the people are stuck, being
punished as described in the book. Show a black rain of hail and snow falling.
 In the FOURTH CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of sinners
sent here. Draw PLUTUS near the line. Show the people being punished as it is
described in the book.
 In the FIFTH CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of sinners
sent here. Include a stream of black water and marsh, and label it with its
correct name. Draw PHLEGYAS in his boat on the marsh. Show the people being
punished as it is described in the book.
 In the SIXTH CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of sinners
sent here. At the top of the section draw a few houses that look like mosques,
and surround this with walls to represent the CITY OF DIS. Include a tower with
the wall atop which sit three Furies. Draw them according to the description in
the book.
 In the SEVENTH CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of
sinners sent here. Draw the MINOTAUR in the first box. On the three lines at
the bottom of each box, write the particular sin for which each type of sinner is
sent there. Color the narrow vertical section between the first and second
box—use the correct color according to its name—and draw ALEXANDER THE
GREAT in or straddling this section. In the middle box draw some HARPIES, and
show the punishment people here receive. In the third box, draw the Beast and
show the people being punished, both as they are described in the book.
 In the EIGHTH CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of
sinners sent here. In each box, which represents a different EVIL POCKET, using
small letters either at the top of each box or along the right side of the box on
the line, write the name of the specific sin for that POCKET. In box I include
horned demons, in box III show Pope Boniface VIII, in box VIII show Ulysses, and
in box IX show Mahomet. Then in all the boxes except for I and VIII, draw a
picture showing what punishment people in each EVIL POCKET receive.
 In the NINTH CIRCLE, on the line write the name of the sin or the types of
sinners sent here. On the four other lines in each of the four boxes, write the
name of the specific sin for each Ring of the NINTH CIRCLE. Somewhere include
the name of each Ring and/or the person after whom the Ring is named. In
Rings I, II, and III, show the punishment the people in each Ring receive. In Ring
IV, show Lucifer as he is described in the book. Finally, in the bottom curved
section, color it blue and label this frozen lake.
This drawing will be due around April 24. We should be finished with the Hell section of
the book by about April 21, so it will be due shortly after that. This assignment will be
worth from anywhere between 50-100 points. You will be graded on the details in the
poster, not on the quality of your drawing. As long as you give the correct names where
required, use the correct colors, and your pictures are accurate to the best of your
drawing ability, you should do well on this assignment.
