FROM CATERPILLARS TO BUTTERFLIES I was once so angry, I viciously attacked each and every leaf that was in my way. I did not care. I had nothing to care about or for. In my cocoon, I watched and listened to the leaves, I learned to care about others and myself. I learned, I could trust those near me. I discovered, I was respected. I became a trusting butterfly. I once felt ugly. I spent my days hiding on the undersides of leaves, too afraid to move, fearing I would be discovered. While In my cocoon, the leaves parted to allow the sun to reach me. I came to realize that despite being exposed, I could be safe. I drew strength from these lessons and emerged as a beautiful proud butterfly. I was once so fearful. I hid against the branch of the tree, blending in so well, no one noticed I was there. While in my cocoon, I observed how the leaves would open up their faces to the sunshine and dance with the wind. It gave me joy. Now, as I fly among the gardens, I am a confident butterfly. I was once unable to move. I spent my days at the bottom of the tree, unable to climb to the lush green leaves. As the wind blew, leaves would gently float down to where I was, nurturing me, giving me strength and the will to go on. In my cocoon, I was transformed and despite my physical restrictions, I became an independent butterfly. None of these “caterpillars” would have become beautiful butterflies without the tree. The leaves that sustain their life is representative of our frontline staff. Those who tirelessly devote their energies and skills on a daily basis to help our “caterpillars” become the best they can be. The branches of the tree are all those within our “caterpillars” community, they provide the base for the leaves. The trunk of the tree is the agency which provides strength and support, while our “caterpillars” are developing. The roots of the tree are all those who have played a role in changing public opinion to ensure that ALL “caterpillars” have opportunity become beautiful BUTTERFLIES. Painting is done with acrylic on a 16x20 canvas. In person, it is much clearer and brighter, with visible details, it was painted by a CLAIR Inc staff. The painting depicts the transformation of the four individuals mentioned above from caterpillars to butterflies as well as other butterflies emerging from the tree. From Caterpillars to Butterflies describes four individuals within the CLAIR Inc, who have changed their lives significantly with the assistance of our staff.
