SMS to host Solarbration Sullivan Middle School science teacher Troy Rogers announced he and the students would be hosting a Solarbration in honor of Earth Day. The event will be at the middle school and will begin at 2 p.m. April 22. The public is encouraged to attend the event. There is no fee to attend. Rogers said the event will include two 50-foot solar weather balloons that they will try to inflate. A couple of classes of third-graders are also scheduled to construct solar ovens. Rogers also plans to have a mini solar house on display. The Okaw Valley Timberwolves dropped their Little Okaw Valley Conference opener on the road to Cerro Gordo by the score of 8-4 on Monday night. OV scored twice in the second inning on a line drive double off the bat of Kyle Pierce, plating Garrett Sparks. Pierce scored the Timberwolves’ second run on an errant pick-off throw to third. OV extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Tim Suddarth walked to start the inning, moved to third on another double by Pierce, then scored, along with Pierce, when Alex Corrington doubled to left field. Leading by the same score going into the bottom of the fourth, the wheels fell off for the Timberwolves. Starter Aaron Fruchtl, who cruised through the first three innings, walked the first batter, then allowed backto-back singles, plating a run to make it 4-1. The next Bronco to the plate launched a grand slam over the center field wall making it 5-4 Cerro Gordo. The Broncos then scored three unearned runs to close out the inning on two OV errors and a hit batter. The Timberwolves had opportunities to get back into the game, including a controversial play in the sixth inning when Josh McLain lifted a ball to deep center field with a runner on first base. The center fielder appeared to have caught the ball after leaving his feet and falling over the wall, a play coach Andrew Hagerman protested should have been ruled a two-run home run, but to no avail. OV was unable to score in the final two frames and suffered its first conference loss of the season. “It was a very frustrating loss,” Hagerman said. “All anyone will want to remember or talk about is the home run we thought Josh should have been credited, but that's not the story here. We unraveled in the fourth inning when we had a fourrun lead, and if we want to have a successful season, we have to learn how to put a fork in teams instead of let them hang around or give them easy runs. It's a game we could have won, and honestly should have won, but we have nobody to blame but ourselves for this one. I think we'll be fine, but this one really hurts. We want to win the LOVC, and this wasn't a game we could afford to lose.” The Timberwolves dropped to 6-7 on the season after falling 5-2 to Neoga on Tuesday. They have a three-game home stand starting Wednesday when they host LOVC foe Villa Grove, face Martinsville on Friday in another LOVC game and play Decatur St. Teresa on Saturday at 10 a.m. Your Full Service Locally Owned Lumber Yard In the same location since 1888 3rd Generation Kull Family since 1947 BOY SCOUTS TROOP 39’S T BREAKFAS Sat., April 17TH • 6:30 A.M. - 10:00 A.M.
