February 19, 2017 ~ Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
~Jesus Invites…St. Joan of Arc Welcomes~
After decades of dialogue with Muslim leaders, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs said, “Still, it is our belief that the most efficient way to
work toward ending or at least curtailing such violence and prejudice is through building networks of dialogue that can overcome ignorance, extremism, and discrimination and so lead to friendship and trust with
Muslims.”
In 2016 this same committee announced that a Catholic-Muslim dialogue would be created on the national level. Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski of Springfield, Mass., the committee’s chairman, responded to this
announcement: “As the national conversation around Islam grows increasingly fraught, coarse and driven
by fear and often willful misinformation, the Catholic Church must help to model real dialogue and goodwill.”
These efforts come at a time when our contemporary culture appears to encourage divisiveness and discord. For example, often the rhetoric is that all Muslims believe that radical Islamic Jihad is an acceptable
response to all unbelievers. Yet, the vast majority of Muslims in America (of which there are an estimated
nine million) denounce the terrorism of the radical jihadists and claim no connection with radical Islam.
As we have journeyed through the Gospel of Matthew these past weeks, you may have concluded by
now that living the Gospel of Jesus is very demanding. Today is no exception as we are encouraged not to
be “driven by fear” but to love our enemies and build friendship and trust, especially with those we see as
other. Jesus offers us a great challenge.

ANNUAL APPEAL
This week, Catholics across the Archdiocese

support the 2017 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal.
Ministries supported by the Appeal have a direct impact on the administration and evangelization efforts at St. Joan of Arc as well as at
the other parishes in our Archdiocese. Your
generous support and participation is critical
to the success of the 2017 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal at St. Joan of Arc and helps move
us forward in hope as we seek to better embody the Gospel message in our lives. Please
complete a pledge form or pledge online at
www.archbalt.org/appeal. Thank you for your
prayers and support for a successful Archbishop’s Annual Appeal.
Our Sincere Thanks…
The parish hall has been
equipped with a bigger
and better stage thanks to
the countless hours of work that parishioner
Don Kern completed. This project began over
Christmas break and finished up just in time
for the Young Adult Movie Night, the school
BINGO and the Family Spaghetti Dinner.
