A good time was had by all and a big Thank You to the DCPA for their assistance in the contest. Plans are being formulated for this years’ event which again will be held in August. PRESIDENT’S REPORT Another successful year has been logged by the Museum. More than 800 people (sign-ins) Visited Carnwath Farms and enjoyed a trip into the past. Here is a chronology of the year. Because of a lack of heat the Museum closed January-April although plans were being formulated for a busy summer and fall. January-February: The Mister Average Bowler Tournament was concluded at local lanes. June: We met at Aloy’s Restaurant to select people to be honored at the dinner and held a Closest to the Pin Contest. Our Car Exhibition drew around 300 people. July: Our second Annual Golf Tournament was a huge success, we had a Family Day at the Museum and 2 Closest to the Pin Contests were held. August: Shoot the Diamonds was well attended and at the Museum, we had an Old Timers Baseball Day and a boxing program attended by former Super Featherweight Champion Tracy Patterson. October: A good crowd enjoyed our annual dinner and we awarded four $500.00 scholarships, funded from the golf tournament proceeds. November: the popular Sports Museum Road Races were held at Carnwath Farms for the first time and we again held our Lottery Fundraiser. Each event went off smoothly and successfully and I offer a hearty THANKS to all who did the planning and donated their time, materials and labor. Because of the successful fundraisers, we are finishing the year with a great bank balance that has been enhanced by substantial donations from the estates of Harry Ferris and Ed Henstebeck. For 2013, I suggest that all past fundraising endeavors continue and encourage suggestions for more. We need to continue our search for new directors and volunteers and come up with new ways to inform the public about our wonderful Museum and its programs. Due to our smaller number of directors and volunteers, I would like the Board to consider opening the Museum only on weekends when we have a program planned or by appointment. We don’t have the staff to open two days every week. After more than 20 years as President, I feel it is time for new leadership and direction. I will not be a candidate for re-election, but would like to remain on the Board Congratulations on a wonderful, productive year for the Sports Museum John Flanagan, President 2012 CURATORS REPORT First, I would like to thank all the Board members and regular members who worked at and supported the museum this past year. The Town of Wappinger had no money for fuel this past year so we were closed to all members until April 7th and open to the public on April 14th. The first event at the Museum for 2012 was the Racing Car Exhibit. On June 10th which was well attended by the public. I would like to thank Roger Liller for his programs on past race tracks, Roger Humeston and Joe Ennesser for taking care of the outside and Bucky Davis and Charlie Darrell and crew for running the food booth. A lot of the credit for a successful day was due to the work party on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The second event at the museum was the Annual Family Picnic. held on July 29th. We invited members of the Wappinger Yankees, the Interstate League, Mariners and Walter Patrice a member of the Poughkeepsie Twilight League. Again the event was well attended by the public and I would like to thank Jim Doxsey for hosting the event and Bob Mayer for his participation in contacting the members of the Twilight League and his presentation on “Old Time Baseball”. The third event to be held at the museum was the Boxing Exhibit with guest Professional Boxer Tracy Patterson on August 19th. Tracy won the Super Bantam Weight Title in 1992 and the Super Feather Weight title in 1995. He retired in 2001 and currently manages boxers. We also updated our boxing displays for the event. This event was poorly attended by the public. The fourth event we had at the museum was the “Renegades Day Salute To Old Time Baseball” on August 26th. Bob Mayer contacted some of the old time baseball players and set up the day at the Renegades. The players were given a tour of the museum before they went to stadium where they treated to a game, food, a hat and recognition on the field before the game. The last event to be held at the museum was the 5K Cross County Run and the 1 K run for Kids on November 3rd. This was the first year that the run had been located at the museum and was very well attended. I would like to thank Pete Sanfilippo for running the fundraiser. Off the property we had an information booth at the Hudson River Fish Summit on March 3rd, an information booth at the Renegades Stadium on April 29th and a food booth and an information booth at the Town of Wappinger Community day on June 30th. I had planned to host a Lacrosse exhibit and a garden tractor pull at the museum this year but ran out of time and energy. Joe Ennesser and I are working on a display to be viewed at the Wappinger Town hall this winter. In addition to the events we had a fair attendance at the museum. The attendance is getting better and with more attractions it should grow. John Flanagan has given me a lot of material that has to be scanned. However, not all of it is on display. As new material comes in, I try to display it and put some of the older stuff away. I received so many pictures and trophies from the racing fraternity I have set up there own room. For more detail about the past events at the museum and fund raisers during the year, please go to the quarterly “Newsletter”. Not knowing what the Town will do about the heat, this winter please check the web site to see when we will open in 2013. Again, thank you everyone for your help. BILL EMSLIE CURATOR. ROAD RUNNERS RACE The Sports Museum Hall of Fame of Dutchess County held their 11th Annual Cross Country Race on Sunday Nov. 3rd at Carnwath Farms in the town of Wappinger. Michael Slinskey won the 5K Race. Connie Seigh was the first female to cross the finish line. The race was supported by Neighborhood Day Care Services, Hannaford, Royal Carting, Red Cedar Tree & Landscaping, MVP Health Insurance and Imaginative MultiMedia. The race was also supported by members of The Sports Museum of Dutchess County and the Mid Hudson Road runners Club. `1 mile Boys & Girls race was won by Zain Jafar, the 1ST female was Jannie Gogi. The members of the Sports Museum Hall of Fame were out in full force and must be given a huge round of applause for spending their Sunday morning during various jobs to insure the success of the race. At the Annual Meeting of the Museum Board members whose terms were expiring were reelected to new three year terms. In addition two Board members President John Flanagan and Treasurer Ken Rose announced their retirement from their respective positions. Both men have done an outstanding job and will be difficult to replace. Elections for their replacements will be held at the January Meeting. Both men have agreed to remain on the Board of Directors. The Sports Museum would like to acknowledge generous donations from the estates of Harry Ferris and Ed Henstebeck. Harry and Ed were members of the Museum and contributed greatly to its success.
