David Kim
Madeleine K. Albright, chair of
Albright Stonebridge Group, a
global strategy firm, and Albright
Capital Management LLC, an
investment advisory firm;
professor at the Georgetown
University School of Foreign
Service; New York Times
bestselling author; and 64th
secretary of state of the United
States, receives the Doctor of
International Relations honorary
degree and is delivering
Dickinson’s 2014 Commencement address.
Albright has had a distinguished career in public service,
diplomacy and international affairs. In 1997, she was named the
first female secretary of state by President Bill Clinton. As
secretary of state, she reinforced America’s alliances, advocated for
democracy and human rights, and promoted American trade,
business, labor and environmental standards abroad. Prior to this
post, she served as the U.S. permanent representative to the
United Nations and was a member of the President’s Cabinet;
president of the Center for National Policy; member of President
Jimmy Carter’s National Security Council and White House staff;
and chief legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie.
In 2012, Albright received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the
nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Barack Obama.
Albright is a professor in the practice of diplomacy at the
Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. She chairs the
National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and the
Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project, and she formerly
chaired a group of experts focused on developing NATO’s New
Strategic Concept. She serves as president of the Harry S. Truman
Scholarship Foundation. Albright also serves on the U.S.
Department of Defense’s Defense Policy Board as well as the
boards of the Aspen Institute and the Center for American
Progress.
Albright is the author of five New York Times bestsellers: her
autobiography, Madam Secretary: A Memoir; The Mighty and the
Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs; Memo to
the President: How We Can Restore America’s Reputation and
Leadership; Read My Pins: Stories From a Diplomat’s Jewel Box; and
Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War,
1937-1948.
Albright is a graduate of Wellesley College and earned master’s
and doctorate degrees from Columbia University’s Department of
Public Law and Government, as well as a certificate from its
Russian Institute (now the Harriman Institute).
David Kim, violinist and
concertmaster of The
Philadelphia Orchestra, receives
the Doctor of Arts honorary
degree.
At a young age, Kim studied
with the famed pedagogue
Dorothy DeLay and later earned
his bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from The Juilliard
School. In 1986, he was the only
American violinist to win a prize
at the International Tchaikovsky
Competition in Moscow.
Kim is the founder of the Kingston Chamber Music Festival at
the University of Rhode Island and served as its artistic director
for 20 years. In conjunction with the Kingston Chamber Music
Festival, Kim founded an annual outreach program that took him
to elementary schools, performing and speaking about classical
music in an effort to cultivate future audiences. He continues to
devote a portion of his schedule each year to bringing classical
music to children.
Kim has held his position as concertmaster of The Philadelphia
Orchestra since 1999. Highlights of his 2013-14 season include
serving as visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin’s
Butler School of Music; a return as concertmaster of the All-Star
Orchestra in New York City and on PBS stations across the U.S.; a
residency at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; a return to
L’Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne in France; and recitals and
solo appearances across the U.S. and Korea.
As a highly sought-after pedagogue, Kim presents master
classes at institutions throughout the U.S. and abroad including
Juilliard, the New World Symphony, Princeton, Yale and the
Korean National University of Arts. He performed at Dickinson
on two occasions in front of standing-room-only crowds: in 2011
to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Rubendall Recital
Hall and in 2013 as an artist-in-residence. Kim also serves as
artist-in-residence for the Hyogo Performing Arts Center
Orchestra in Japan and at Eastern University, where he received an
honorary doctorate. He also received an honorary doctorate from
the University of Rhode Island.

Honorary Degrees
H.F. (Gerry) Lenfest
H.F. (Gerry) Lenfest, entrepreneur and philanthropist, receives
the Doctor of Philanthropy
honorary degree.
Lenfest practiced law at the
New York firm of Davis Polk &
Wardwell before becoming
corporate counsel of Walter
Annenberg’s Triangle
Publications in 1965. In 1970, he
became managing director of the
company’s communications
division consisting of Seventeen
magazine and Triangle’s cable television properties. He started
Lenfest Communications four years later with the purchase of two
cable television companies from Annenberg. Lenfest founded and
owned what became the Philadelphia region’s largest cable
operator, Suburban Cable TV, part of Lenfest Communications,
until its sale to Comcast Communications in 2000, and is part
owner of Interstate General Media, which publishes The
Philadelphia Inquirer.
Lenfest made his fortune as a media mogul and has made a
career out of generous philanthropic commitments to disadvantaged youth, the arts, higher education and the environment. In
2000, he and his wife, Marguerite, established The Lenfest
Foundation, an independent, board-directed, private foundation.
Its priorities are scholarships for college-bound students from
Pennsylvania’s rural regions; career and technical education; early
childhood education and out-of-school-time programs for
disadvantaged youth, primarily in Philadelphia; climate change;
and protection of the oceans.
Through their foundation and private donations, the Lenfests
have already given the bulk of their wealth to charitable causes
and have committed to distributing even more by spending down
the foundation and its affiliated programs.
Lenfest chairs the boards of the Museum of the American
Revolution and the James Madison Council of the Library of
Congress, and he has previously chaired the boards of the
Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Curtis Institute of Music. He
is an honorary trustee of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Lenfest
is a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, where he served as the
president of the Board of Regents; Washington and Lee University,
where he is an emeritus trustee; and Columbia University. He has
been active in Columbia Law School’s affairs since his graduation
and received the school’s Distinguished Achievement Award in
1997. He is permanent president of his class and has served on his
class fund committee, the Board of Visitors, the Law School
Association Board and the Dean’s Council of the Law School.

The Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize at Dickinson College for
Global Environmental Activism
Honoring Natural Resources Defense Council Co-Founder John Adams
This year Dickinson College awards the third-annual Sam
Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize at Dickinson College for Global
Environmental Activism. The $100,000 prize, given to an individual or group dedicated to preserving the planet and its
resources, is awarded annually and incorporates a short-term
residency for student and community interaction during the
academic year.
The prize honors John Adams, who co-founded the Natural
Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in 1970, serving as the
NRDC’s executive director, and later president, from its inception
until 2006, a tenure unparalleled by the leader of any other
environmental organization. Today, the NRDC stands as a force for
nature, with more than a million members, online activists and a
staff of 400 using law, science and grassroots activism to carry out
its important mission. Adams continues to play an active role in
the organization on the local, national and international levels.
In 2010 Adams and his wife, Patricia, recounted the history of
the NRDC and the environmental movement in their aptly named
memoir, A Force For Nature. President Barack Obama awarded
Adams the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest
civilian honor, in 2011 for his lifetime of public-service
achievements.
Sam Rose ’58 and his wife, Julie Walters, established the prize
because of their deep personal regard for Adams and his work.
Rose, a real-estate developer and attorney, was a member of the
1958 Dickinson lacrosse team that made college history when it
won Dickinson’s first and only national title. A founding partner of
Greenebaum and Rose Associates, he has more than 40 years of
experience in commercial development, primarily in the
Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. He is an emeritus trustee of
Dickinson.
Committed to restoring and sustaining the natural world for
future generations, Rose and Walters created this prize to focus
attention on the need to reduce the impact of human lives on the
planet, particularly given the rising population predictions for this
century.
Dickinson, a national leader and innovator in sustainability
education, challenges its students through classroom studies, living
laboratories, service learning, student-faculty research and study
abroad to build the knowledge and skills needed to create a
sustainable world. Courses throughout the curriculum examine
and seek solutions to national and global environmental problems.
Dickinson’s achievements and leadership in sustainability have
earned the highest recognition from the Association for the
Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, Sierra
magazine, the Sustainable Endowments Institute, The Princeton
Review and Second Nature.
James Balog is the third recipient
of the Sam Rose ’58 and Julie
Walters Prize at Dickinson
College for Global Environmental
Activism. Balog, who founded the
Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) and
Earth Vision Trust, has been at the
forefront of merging art and
science and giving a “visual voice”
to the planet’s changing
ecosystems.
To reveal the impact of climate
change, Balog and his team
undertook the most wide-ranging, ground-based photographic
study of glaciers ever conducted. The results of this pioneering
work are featured in the internationally acclaimed, award-winning
documentary Chasing Ice and the PBS/NOVA special Extreme Ice.
The film Chasing Ice has been screened at the White House, the
U.S. Congress, the U.K. House of Commons and the U.N., and it
has been the subject of features on many national news shows.
Balog holds a graduate degree in geography and geomorphology
from the University of Colorado and has been honored with many
awards, including the American Geophysical Union Presidential
Citation for Science and Society, the Heinz Award and an honorary
doctor of science degree from the University of Alberta. In 2009, he
served as a NASA representative at the U.N. Conference on Climate
Change (COP-15) in Copenhagen.
He is the author of eight books, including ICE: Portraits of
Vanishing Glaciers, Tree: A New Vision of the American Forest and
Survivors: A New Vision of Endangered Wildlife, the last of which
was hailed as a major conceptual breakthrough in environmental
photography. His work is in dozens of public and private art
collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the
Corcoran Gallery of Art; the Denver Art Museum; and the Gilman
Paper Company. His work also has been extensively published in
most of the world’s major pictorial magazines, including Life,
Vanity Fair and National Geographic.

Additional Information
Photo Stand Procedure
Photos of students receiving their diplomas may be taken from the photo
stand on the left side of the platform. Please assist us in making sure every
family has the opportunity to take a photo by sending only one family
member per graduate to the photo area well in advance of your student’s
descent down “the old stone steps.” College personnel will be stationed near
the photo area to help you move onto the platform shortly before your
graduate receives his or her diploma. Please note that this area is for photography only. No video will be permitted to be filmed as doing so is time
consuming and does not allow other families the same opportunity to
photograph their graduate.
Diplomas
At the request of past graduates and parents, we have not rolled the actual
diplomas. The original diplomas will be available for pickup by the graduate
or a family member on Britton Plaza (or, in the case of inclement weather, in
Biddle House) immediately following Commencement.
Please be sure to pick them up by 2 p.m.
Photographs
U.S. Candids will take photographs of each graduate. Photos will
be posted online within two to three days after the graduation ceremony.
You can view and purchase photos online at www.uscandids.com. If you are
unable to view the photos online, please call 484-891-0482.
For additional information, questions or comments, please e-mail
[email protected].
Videos
A professional videographer will tape the ceremony.
To purchase copies of the DVD or Blu-ray disc,
contact Bucher’s Video at 717-334-0038.

Leaving Carlisle
Guests and graduates may experience heavy traffic this afternoon because
of the Carlisle Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals car show at the Carlisle
Fairgrounds. To avoid traffic, people intending to go north or south on
I-81 should go south on College Street, turn right on Walnut Bottom Road
and proceed to the entrance ramps for I-81 (Exit 45). If you need to travel
on the Turnpike, go to I-81 (as above) and proceed north
to Exit 52 (PA Turnpike signs are clearly marked), then south on the
Harrisburg Pike (Rt. 11) to the Turnpike entrance.
